View Full Version : Guilty Gene (comic)

Enter the Guilty Gene website!

Guilty Gene is my first comic with serious storyline - practically jokeless. It is a tale of Jazz's clone from Twin MegaBattleShips - his birth, trial and confrontation with Jazz. His whole, short life. It shows almost everything that happened on Battleships from his point of view.

The comic is quite slowly updated, but I'm trying my best to do it well and fast at the same time. It would be easier as a fanfic, but it would also lose a lot that way. I'm not a good writer, but I have some experience with comics. Enjoy, especially since there aren't many JJ fancomics.

UPDATE: This is the last update of this post. Since the website is now being updated with minimal delay, you won't lose much by skipping the DA part.

Hm, your cover image takes quite long to load. If you ever have less than 256 colors, save as a copy as a gif file with nearest color matching; it'll decrease the size a lot.

DoubleGJ
Mar 27, 2004, 09:44 AM
The problem is I'm not sure if used more than 255 colors or not. I also wanted to make JPEG, but it turned out to be HEAVIER than PNG (it was 127 KB).

Radium
Mar 27, 2004, 09:49 AM
I think that one actually uses more than 1000 colors (mainly because of antialiasing), but if any future images use very few colors, just try gif.

So, when does the comic start?

The page will be delayed since I got a flu and couldn't focus while drawing... Even now I must think a lot to write this post. Gah, back to bed.

I make some lame piece of fanart and write "Get Well Soon" across the top in a big, annoying font, but there's nothing to fanartize yet.

I agree; very dramatic start. I do suggest, though, that you try to do the text and borders digitally (even if you don't have fancy software, things like Powerpoint can do really nice text boxes and whatnot =P). My comic improved a lot (http://www.foxmage.com/Newpics.png) when I stopped hand drawing the text boxes and borders.

Oh, and think you forgot his ears. Or maybe I just can't see them.

I wanted to make it look rusted, when writing I drew lines with many, but short swipes. However, if this makes it too hard to read, I can give up with this idea for text.
Oh, and think you forgot his ears. Or maybe I just can't see them.
They're on his back, just hanging out there. You can see them a bit if you look hard enough.

Now I just realised something... isn't this rabbit that grey Jazz clone from JJ1?

Violet CLM
Apr 24, 2004, 11:48 AM
Wasn't that guy large, gray, and a robot?

cooba
Apr 24, 2004, 11:49 AM
This is large and gray. And I doubt JJ1 one was a robot.

Violet CLM
Apr 24, 2004, 11:59 AM
Ooooh, you mean the COVER. Well, that's a possibility. It's got gray fur, red eyes (though a different style of red), a yellow headband and blue armbands, just like the one from JJ1.

Not a robot? It would have to have been blind if it wasn't a robot.

I think that this Guilty Gene is actually some gene of evilness that went into rabbit's body.

Yay! Page 2 is finally done. With the new computer I also got some good programs, including new Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro! Now I can use some good effects. You can already see that on page 2. I think I will fix page 1 also so it looks as good as page 2... Maybe there is something I can do with the cover, too.

Very nice; comicing is quite hard. Lemme suggest a few things, though:

-Try scanning and coloring the comic at a larger size, then shrink it down before releasing it. This will usually anti-alias the lines (sometimes called "smart size"), making them look softer.
-Try adding text digitally. Your handwriting isn't bad, but computer text just looks a bit better. Look at an example (http://www.foxmage.com/ComparePings.gif) I made a while back with my comic that so totally isn't dead yet.

My sucky WinME doesn't allow smaller font than 8 and I can't fit that into speech bubbles.
As for the page size... I don't know. I can blur the image a bit. I draw on A5, because I seem to lose proportions when the drawing is quite big.

I mean, try scanning at a higher resolution; more pixels/inch. That way you can scale it down and have smoother looking edges, and it could possibly be large enough for digital text.

I have fixed the 1st page. Thanks for hints Radium - I agree the text looks better now. But... look at the file size. It's - sweet merciful tuna! - 425 KB!!! Biiig. I think I'll register a new server especially for GG, maybe even make a website?

Now something special - if you have Shareaza or any other program compatible with it's network, you can browse my shared directories for page 3 and 4 previews. The already posted pages are there, too.

freewebs == bjarni
:(
I would suggest (tripod) lycos, I got 100 mb there for free, but now they decreased the amount for new registring users to 50. so still, 50 mb for free... www.tripod.lycos.com
they also have a lot of software support like php mysql and more, also for free, and the bandwith limit is very wide, and when you cross the limit, you just get a warning bar on your admin page (which has still not happened for me, not even with 30 mb of really often viewed images and some short fragments of film), and no blocked pages and stuff.
(maybe something else is better, but I personally think that freewebs IZ THE SUXORZ)

~Alex

Btw, nice comic, like to see more soon :D

Get a freewebs account, then you can upload 50 files. Then get yourself a photobucket account, you can store practically all the images you want there. You can then put your photobucket images onto your freewebs pages, or directlink them from anywhere you want.

This is very interesting. It's nice to see the only rabbit with the right to be a recolor. The flashback images of Jazz are somewhat confusing, though, as his backpack has straps on both sides, not diagonally across like that. And I don't recall Jazz being quite so humanoid in JJ1.

In Jazz1 sprite, he sometimes has a backpack, sometimes not. Something like the second holding piece in Jazz2 sprite. So, in this comic Jazz sometimes leaves his backpack in his spaceship.
And I know about the Jazz's metamorphosis, I just couldn't make him like that (not skilled enough, huh) so I just made him look younger than in Jazz2.

'The following story introduces a series of events that happened right before the destruction of the Twin Megabattleships... Shown from the viewpoint of their most important personae, these events have never been noted down by either the governmental database of Shellion or by the worldwide chronicles of Carrotus.

It's 2 days before Zero Hour and the one known as Jazz Jackrabbit still hasn't arrived on the main unit of the 'Turtle Terrorists' Organisation': the Twin Megabattleships. We begin the story with the first heartbeat of our main character.'
