View Full Version : Nostalgia strikes - results of the simple contest

A long time ago(about 2 years?) I wanted to have some fun.

So, I thought up a very simple tileset. It only existed of square blocks and a few diagonal blocks.

I made up a contest out of it. Who could design the best level with only the basics?

Back to basics. Can you make a good level, while you only have access to a few tiles?

I didn't expect a lot of results, but I did get some, and how awesome they were!

As I have never really published the results in a good way, I will publish them now.

The participants were Bobby, Ice M A N(I think? doh) and Disguise. Back then not that known yet. But now they are!

They sent in some awesome levels. Bobby got first, and with good reason! With this simple tileset he managed to design a original, fun level, that looked nice too!

Disguise got second. And oh.. how well deserved. You really see the jcs master, as he managed to form my tileset into a shape that I wouldn't even have thought of!

Evilmike got second too. He managed to create a very original battle level that plays very lovely!

And Ice M A N, he managed to make a good battle level too. Not as original as the others, but it's still quite good.

Enough blabbering, get those pearls. http://jazz2.nagcentral.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

dissimple.j2l: Disguise's entry

simpleice.j2l: Ice M A N's entry

Update: added Evilmike's level. I am very sorry, evilmike.. because of the.. weird name of your level and it's abscense in my jj2 directory I totally forgot about it! This sure was a second place tier.

The website that I'm building is going to have JCS contests. Maybie I can make a contest like that. Of course, it will be a bit different, but it would still be neat.

Wow, this is old http://jazz2.nagcentral.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif I think I was actually intending to enter, but I forgot the deadline (as usual ^_^o).

When I try to go to that site, I get in the index, and I can't download the levels (at least not in level format)... ;_;

Odd. I downloaded all the stuff fine. HAH! I BEAT ALL OF YOU! YOU SUCK!

...

Note the time I posted this. Caffene-induced weirdness alwyas kicks in around this time for me. Wow. I can see my hand shaking. I guess I watched too much TV today. 5 hours isn't THAT much, IS it? Ugh. I can't type under these conditions.

If you use Internet Explorer, rightclick on a file and click save target as.

If you have netscape, dump it and get Internet Explorer. Netscape is (officially!) dead.

A couple of reasons not to use netscape:

1. Netscape inc. announced it is dead, and all support will be dropped soon.

2. Netscape can't display a lot of modern sites properly, thus hurting AND the site owners, AND the users of netscape.

3. Netscape has non-fixed security stuff

4. Mozilla and IE are better :P

I kinda Like Opera.

If their rivalry is so strong with Microsoft, why would AOL let Netscape drop? Now they're in for it. They make the worst purchases. ;-P

SteelTalon
Jul 1, 2001, 02:54 PM
And yet they let Microsoft stay "intact" while competition is "dying"... ;P

Netscape also doesn't support cascading stylesheets properly. Internet explorer doesn't either, but it supports it a lot more than netscape does. Opra is the best browser for that.

Humph. Evil Netscape owners, quitting like that http://jazz2.nagcentral.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_mad.gif. IE had better not disappear while online like it does offline.

Does IE have a separate user option like Netscape? If it doesn't, I'm not moving.

I doubt it has.

Let's get back on topic.

Well, I brought up IE. (Icky, icky!) It managed to download the tileset, Bobby's entry and Evilmike's but not the other two. I'll try again later. Bobby's was amazing. Evilmike's looked like any battle level, but it was still pretty good. New contest, please.

*Remembers that contest like yesterday*

If I remember correctly, a few of the springs in my level did the flying-spring-thing (accidently). I don't remember if I fixed it or not. :p

Anyhoo.. I hated that level (and all my levels except for one).. so I shall not download it.

Hmm..someone would be interested in a new simple contest?

I think another simple contest would be great. It would depict the third generation's ability to come up with nice level designs.

EvilMike
Jul 3, 2001, 10:00 AM
I would love to participate in a contest. JCS contests are great.

EvilMike
Jul 3, 2001, 10:01 AM
Just make sure that you use a different tileset this time :P. Make it simple, but add some different stuff so the people who entered the first one don't get bored.

Violet CLM
Jul 3, 2001, 11:40 AM
At least fill up the empty space. (Yes, I viewed the tileset in JCS)

Fear
Jul 4, 2001, 09:11 AM
Well I think the tileset is entirely up to the 'creator' of the contest.

But if you want it simple I suggest something like that one from j2o...whatsitsname.....lemmething.... No I dont know, Ill get back to you on that :S

Doodie, I looked at those levels, and they're all very rux0r. Very original. That tileset looked impossible to use!

Fear
Jul 5, 2001, 05:22 AM
Agh Ruxor is before my time. what is it?

Violet CLM
Jul 5, 2001, 12:10 PM
There is a J2S rumor about that. "Be l33t. Go ruxor." or something like that. But I think it means rocks or something.

Tik
Jul 5, 2001, 03:16 PM
Well, in my own twisted online vocabulary, it means "very cool".

Lamer
Jul 13, 2001, 08:11 PM
The levels are very well designed, I wish I had the imagination or abstract thinking to make levels like those.

Off-topic:

Talec, I think IE has an equivalent of the separate user option of Netscape. You can create different profiles and also, IE's other settings can be customized and saved for every user that logs on in Windows.

How about a contest using the Heaven tileset? It hasn't really been used yet...

[EDIT: Heck, maybe even an Assault contest or something like that...]

Or jsut a contest of who makes the nicest tileset

Violet CLM
Jul 15, 2001, 11:56 AM
Most people can't make good tilesets, so a lot of people would have advantages. (And I could have sworn I had seen the Heaven tileset used somewhere...)

Shh...c'mon this post isn't that old, is it?

A magnificent-tastic idea by all means. I've procrastinated with levels ever since I've been making them so this would be something I'd be able to finish.

And gosh-darn interesting. . . level contests are fun (ie Try-Me Comp....) Since there's still a gigantic slew of people around this is a fine idea and should be acted on if you'd like. ^_^'
