Well, ive recently discovered yet another problem.
As far as I know when i run right (in JJ2) flashing rainbow-coloured circles appear. I tried getting screenshots but it dissappears FAST. I wondering if my monitor is burning out, or if there is something wrong with my computer's drivers.
This is a wonderful month for tech help isnt it?
The usual system specs:
OS: Windows ME
Internet: Cogeco cable/modem
JJ2 version: 1.23 (never tried 1.24 yet)
Display Adapters: NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64
Monitor: DellM781s
So far i have noticed this problem in a lvl made with the sirius tileset by agama (if that has anything to do with this).
I might have to re-install again, but that would be the 2nd time in one month. My fams not gonna be happy...

Formatting your hard drive isn't the best choice.
BlazinDragon
Jul 10, 2004, 03:13 PM
does formatting make you lose EVERYthing in your C- Drive (honestly ive been on my windows 95, 2000,ME, XP (not all mine) and i still dont know the answer to that question!
Also today i was browsing the JCF and that whitish/rainbowish thing showed up. So it isnt limited to the JJ2 game. Strange...

I honestly do not know the answer to your problem (reinstalling the video adapter could work) but I do know that suggesting a format (which results in complete data loss unless you back up imporant stuff) for problems like these is a bad idea.

rings or circles, like filled in circles? Like an MCE circle?
Make sure there's nothing magnetic near your monitor like heavy speakers, magets, large tvs, pencil sharperners.

Here's some possiblities.
---
Poss. 1. Do you have graphics problems with other programs? Other games?
Poss 2. Did you try uninstalling JJ2 and try installing it again?
Poss 1.
If you are able to, go to PC Drivers (http://www.drivershq.com/?af=driversdotcom&bn=4) and look up for your card. If you don't know what to do, then I'll find the download updates for you. I doubt this is the problem, but it never hurts to try to upgrade your video adapter or monitor.
Don't forget to try Windows Update (http://www.windowsupdate.com) for device driver updates too.
Also, your monitor could be broken, and you might need to get a new one. It costs too much to take the monitor in for repair, so your better off getting yourself a new monitor. This is the last resort of course.
And if my suggestions don't work, see if someone else can help you, before trying to purchase a new monitor.
BTW, how old is your monitor?

The nvidia site (http://www.nvidia.com/) has drivers for all their cards, so you don't have to look for third-party ones. Might also be worth updating motherboard drivers. If you've got a mobile or cordless phone then don't put it near your monitor (actually, mobiles in general don't mix particularly well with computers).
I'd stay clear of Windows Update drivers - I've had bad experiences from there (bad as in a creative sound card driver from there knocked out both the sound card and the ADSL modem).

What? That's never happened to me before, that's how I get my ATI video card updates.

I *did* warn you about drivers from windows update... :D
Try a reinstall of the latest version of DirectX. If you can, test with a diffreent monitor see if that makes the problem go away. If you've added any new hardware recently, then try uninstalling and removing that. If that doesn't work, then my suggestion would be to get a new graphics card (the model you've got is a rather old one I think).
Good luck!

$WindowsME OR ($WindowsME AND $WindowsUpdateDrivers) = $fatalerror
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pre-Actions:
1. Uninstall current DirectX with this (http://www.dxbuster.de/) tool.
2. Uninstall current VideoDriver, without restarting PC (Either Add\Remove Programs or System=>Device Manager=>Delete all from that has to do with Video)
Solution:
+ Windows ME (as is now)
+ DirectX 8.1 (http://www.soft32.com/download_250.html) - Ya, 8.1 is the best one
+ Latest Video Driver from Manufacturer (http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_61.76)
+ Full Check for Viruses by Latest Copy of Norton AntiVirus or DrWeb
Outcome:
- Working computer
- Free Ad in Signature (subject: Liable for Negotiation)

nah that dosent work. Ive been trying everything, and ive done scans with Mc Afee and it detects NO viruses NO adware and NOTHING else suspicious. If its a virus or a script Mc Afee shouldve picked it up long ago. Now the problem has progressed to when i double click to open folders (in my hard drives) it gives me the "open with" menu and i cant get in. JJ2 still spazmodically freezes, msn still chat lags, and the computer is still having a bad day.
So is there anything i can do? I'd rather not resort to a re-installation of my system. Id lose to much info ;p.
system stats:
OS: Windows ME
Cable: Cogeco modem/LAN
Display driver: Nvidia (sp?)
Ill add more later, im exhausted

First of all, McAffee does not always pick up all the viruses. Honestly, it is not the best antivirus. So, I'd suggest DrWeb (ftp://ftp.drweb.ru/pub/drweb/drweb32.exe). Without a registration key it does not cure, but it just finds the probable viruses using its heuristic analysis (means it can find some of the viruses that are not yet known), and you will at least be able to see them. Registered version can also delete them.
You could also try the following:
Step A
1. START=>Run=>[type 'msconfig']=>OK
2. Startup TAB
3. Uncheck everything you don't know. That is, all that you don't use.
4. Click OK and restart.
Step B
1. Download BrowserSentinel, which will only work for 30 days.
2. Load it, then go through its tabs, deleting everything on your way. Except for startup tab, where you delete only what you don't use\don't know. Use the default option when a confirmation window pops up. That's the one that says "recommended" next to it.
3. Restart computer.
If nothing helps, well then you got a stealth virus or the virus has already made a lot of damage to your system and nothing can help you.
Now what you can do:
Option 1. Continue working on a laggy computer for the rest of your life.
Option 2. (What I'd do): Follow this instruction:
1a. Download AIDA32 from www.aida32.hu (free). Use it to find out the following:
- Your Ethernet(LAN) card model and website
- Your VideoCard model and website
- Your Monitor model and website
- Your SoundCard model and website
- Your mouse, keyboard and other miscellaneous peripheral models and websites.
- Any tools for your computer that manufacturer provides. Can be found on the manufacturer's website.
1b. Using the models, go to the support websites and try to find and download the appropriate driver for every part of your computer listed above. If there is no website or the website does not provide drivers, go to www.driversearch.com and I give you 100% that you'll find the driver there. Just type in the model in the search box, and you ll get a list of links. After you have collected all the driver, put them into your documents folder. If any of them are ZIPped, you will have to unzip them with WinZip. Only then follow to the next step.
1c. Take all info (documents, favorites, mail, drivers) into one folder and either burn a backup CD or move it to second harddrive. You can also move your stuff to another computer in your household, if there is one, and if you are connected through LAN. Outlook express mail is stored in C:\Windows\Application Data\Identities\Outlook Express\YOUR IDENTITY\ ***here r your mail files ***
2. Reboot in DOS mode
3. Format C:
4. Use a startup floppy or a startup CD with CD-ROM support
5. D:\Win98se\Setup.exe or in your case D:\WinME\setup.exe or wherever your setup is...
6. Install drivers that you have backed up before... Click cancel on all the windows that ask you to install a driver for the device found. Then, when you are in the windows shell, go into that folder where you saved them and execute every single of them. Those, that don't have setup, well, you will get popups on the next reboot, and then you specify the path to the folder. Like, when it asks you for a driver for something like PCI-compatible Video Card, tell it to look in C:\Documents\NvidiaLALALA\ or something like that...
7. Move your info back to the appropriate places...
8. Install PopUp Stopper Companion and BrowserSentinel. After this you are pretty much protected from almost everything even without antivirus. Because popup stopper companion stop popups, and browser sentinel does not allow any stuff to be installed in startup or wherever without your confirmation.
Good Luck!

well, finally after starting at the computer screen and doing some testing, ive figured out the this "circle" problem is connected with my keyboard AND mouse.
Let me explain:
I went on JJ2 and pressed ctrl every few seconds about half a second after pressing the ctrl key the circles appeared where my mouse should have been on the desktop. Next step. After a quit jj2 shortly determining that it HAD something to do with my keyboard i had my mouse where i could clearly see it on my desktop. I press ctrl and the circles were positioned EXACTLY around the mouses' centre point. giving off circles that went down about 5 sections each getting smaller at an equal rate.
My mouse brand is: Microsoft PS/2 Port Mouse
My Keyboard brand is: Standard 101/102-key or Microsoft natural keyboard
Ive ran MANY virus scans and it detects NO viruses and NO adware. Ive also reactivated windows update. And have restarted the computer many many many times, but to no avail.
I would really appriciate it if someone could try and find the driver for me on the internet i can download.
Or do you think i should buy another mouse and keyboard and take the risk it might now work?
Your opinions will be really important because i want to consider all possibilities to this problem

ROFL! That's not a brand at all...

Nah. I think you just have to throw the mouse and keyboard outta the window and control your computer via voice...
Or, you can try throwing your mouse n keyboard into the laundry, put a lot of soap, might help :p

Ooh! That's easy to fix! I can't believe you don't know how to fix it!
All you have to do is go into the Mouse settings and uncheck the box that makes Ctrl show the location of the mouse.

Hahaha! He's right. And none of us realized it. I just learned a semi-useless/semi-annoying feature for my mouse. Good thing you didn't buy a new mouse yet.

EvilMonkey,
Isn't that in Accessibility Options?
And if it is, then as far as I remember, the sticky keys option is also in there, probably turned on :)
But anyway - Standard PS/2 Mouse is not a brand - connect ANY PS/2 mouse to your computer and it will show up as Standard PS/2 Mouse... Same goes with most keyboards...
So, that is just name of the driver, under which most of mice\keyboards work....

ok, if you have windows ME (im not sure if it works for any other windows) but when you go to your mouse settings properties in the control pannel and on one of the tabs, you check off locate mouse when ctrl is pressed. I did this when after a restart i couldnt see my mouse, i couldnt use it either, so i went into the control pannel (after using the helpful windows button) i used arrow keys to get to it. I checked to see if my mouse would show, it didnt, so i restarted my computer and it was fixed, but i forgot to un-check the little box ^^'
