I want to have input on what makes a server good. What kind of server should I have? What maps should it have? Recommend the best maps you've ever seen. Best game type. Is 256Kbps upstream good?

It doesn't exist 8D
Edit: I find it funny that you ask for the best server ever and then give people the option of choosing multiple choices.

I voted for a dedicated server with Custom battle maps.
That would rock ;)
256kb/s upstream should be enough for a good server, unless there are (too) many ppl on it.

I'm testing my server with a max of 8 people. Some people were concerned about their ping time... but they were from outside the US...
What would be the max amount I would want to put on 256Kbps?

The max would be just around 8 then. But of course, the ping also depends on the player's location.

Make it 10, a lot more better.

256kbps is low.
I would vote for dedicated Cooperation server, but as usual it doesn't appear on Conker's list.

Dedicated battle server with single player levels? Well, I suppose that might be an interesting novelty.
As for the poll, I'd like a CTF server with custom levels. If you make this server, though, please try to refrain from throwing the really overused levels. (You know, Happy Semiconductor, Distopia, BloodBunny's Lair etc...)

CTF with custom levels is most fun I guess. Though I wouldn't mind a dedicated survivor/ground force server.

A dedicated battle server with default/custom maps

Just hosting Survivor 24/7 would be cool.

Dynamic mode, dynamic maps.
Not everyone finds battle interesting enough.
CTF doesn't work well with few people.
Treasure also doesn't work too well with few people.
Default levels get boring very quicky.
Custom levels can often suck.
P.S. There are no maps in JJ2. If you mean levels.. they're called levels.

256kbps,
It should handle 16 players fine, heck the Bash Server with 16 players never went above 24kb/sec when i was monitoring it. (and 256kbps = 30kb or so)
but with the jj2 net code being as poor as it is, and with pings and such, u can still expect Connection Time out errors and such in any large game with say 12 or more players.

I was playing CTF today. It seemed to be a lot more fun than battle.... just the thrill of having the flag... :O
But I would agree that you need at least 4 players at a time for it to work.
I was wondering.... has anyone successfully made a Team Battle gametype? I tried altering CTF mode... but it would still only count Flag captures... if there was a way I could change that to Frags for each team that would be neat. Set the frag target for 100 and let the teams battle it out. That would be cool, no?

Team Battle was made quite a while back. It's hosted in CTF mode, and the team that scores the least points (you score a point every time you die) wins.
I voted for Battle with custom and default maps, and Treasure with custom and default maps. Treasure is incredibly underrated. It requires lots of skill, and is incredibly fun to play. But if we were talking which paticular server rules, I'm biased for Dark Realms.

GO Treasure Hunt. Seriously. People should make more TH levels.

^^^
All I need is a dedicated server full of custom/default battle maps, a dedicated server for survivor, & a dedicated server for test/battle levels.

Quake 3 Arena is just DEAD, it is SO OLD..
UT2004\Doom3 is like a replacement for that game.

Q3A atm 900 players playing and has a ClanBase Eurocup with Q3A CTF, so thats far away from dead..
besides jj2 has trouble to get even 9 players.

I just ordered some networking equipment for the server. I've been doing some non dedicated tests and it seems like people like the OLC maps. They are really nice maps... but I want to add a lot more to the level cycle... can anyone recommend levels of that quality I can add?
It will probably be a battle server... more people seem to want battle despite what this poll says currently...
I am still trying to find ways of getting a true Team Battle game type. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
BTW, I have to run the server with Windows 2000 because Windows XP and Server 2003 don't work on that computer for some reason.

As soon as I'll solve my serverlist problem, I'll host something whenever I'll get to the PC.

Well... my hardware arrived today...
The video card doesn't work in this. The new cable modem can't detect a cable network.
The round IDE cables I ordered worked... but they are not very flexable... and I decided not to use them in my computer because they had to be bent in funny ways and they kept coming lose. My 1GB flash drive is still on backorder.
I don't recommend TigerDirect.com (http://www.tigerdirect.com/) to anyone... I think I'm going to try NewEgg.com (http://www.newegg.com/). It's hard finding a good video card for AGP 4X...
