View Full Version : JJ2 Bug Trivia
Bobby aka Dizzy
Feb 20, 2005, 09:24 PM
After a random incident when playing on JJ2 today BlurredD and I (mostly BlurredD) figured out a way for people to capture their own team's flag. Just for kicks I was wondering if people were able to come up with how this is done. :)
If no one can come up with a solutionin a few days, I'll post the answer - but it's really not that hard. Oh, and BlurredD, no giving it away please.

Blur looks funny with red shoes. I'll grab someone for experimentation later.
Edit: Oh, wait! It's an edited version of Tubelectric, with switched red and blue colors, and your fur colors are actually set to red, and those flags in the upper left are fake, and you have colored names! Except no.

Please note that no cheating or hacking was required to get to the situation I descibed above and seen in BlurredD's picture.

Hmm... neat.
There's always that rare JJ2 bug, which gives you the flag of opposite team instantly when you join the server. So when you have a lag copy of yourself, it gives you red flag when you're red and vice versa?

Annoying fun that is. And I personally prefer Jailbreak over all other gametypes.
White Rabbit
Feb 26, 2005, 08:23 AM
Would it be possible to start a battle game using a CTF lvl, make someone with a red name and red clothes join and make your own name blue with blue clothes (i.e. blue head-band, backpack, socks, guns, etc.). Then, use Controller to change the game mode to CTF and voila! You can, sort of, capture your own team's flag. ;P Well, ok, you're still capturing your opponent's flag, but it looks as if you've done the opposite.
blurredd
Feb 26, 2005, 08:57 AM
Yes, that would be possible.
Bobby aka Dizzy
Feb 26, 2005, 11:16 AM
However it's still possible without memory editing through programs like Controller.

Ergh, It's not a bug. Seekers are meant to be the most rapid fire button mashing weapon.
blurredd
Mar 10, 2005, 02:27 PM
Just to clear things up, I (and presumably Pyro) only had to press the fire button once for it to work. And it's a bug because I'm fairly sure that frozen springs were never meant to be used to make weapons fire rapidly. Sooner or later I'm going to incorporate that bug into one of my levels.
Tubz
Mar 11, 2005, 10:22 AM
Hmm. After much careful observation of everyone's shots. I have to say that yours and Monolith's look easy to do. Pyro's looks like a bug. I didn't exactly see what frozen springs had to do with any of your screenshots. And what do you mean pressing fire once? I don't believe that.

Pyro's looks like a bug.Maybe because this is a bug?I didn't exactly see what frozen springs had to do with any of your screenshots.Did anyone "exactly see" what did unmasked level borders to do with flagbug? JJ2's bugs are incredibly twisted. And what do you mean pressing fire once?That he pressed "fire" button once and loads of seekers were shot out.

blurredd
Mar 17, 2005, 02:03 PM
That's what happens when you play Security Breach v2 too often.
Edit: Actually, I got the same bug just now when I joined the LB server. I would assume it has something to do with what the server is using, since I've never seen this bug with this level anywhere else.
I also found a floating dot (it looked like the light from a speed trail but in one spot), which was what my red arrow was pointing to instead of the red flag:
http://www.jazz2online.com/d3/nobases.jpg
By the way, some springs seem to be missing as well. My only guess as to why this is happening is because the server is using the ghost thing that comes with PC4, but I somehow doubt it.

I have worked out where exactly in Sacrifice the bug happened, so I wonder if it HAS to be there or if it can take place anywhere? Oh, and it seems to me as if Blur's JJ2 screen has not been squeezed/compressed but has simply been made much thinner, while the heiht, I think, remains the same. I'm confused on the flag bug...... But, the seeker bug thingy is old news.How that flag bug is achieved might be better off left unrevealed since it could disrupt CTF games if it's abused. Then again, you can always kick/ban those who abuse it. Try figuring it out for yourself. And the seeker bug (although it works with any weapon) is indeed old, but I wanted to see who would get it.
To White Rabbit, I'm not giving you any hints but I will give you some advice. What you should do is find someone you know to work with, split up your resources, then together screen through all possible solutions.
And sers, what theme are you using that the links blend into background? I checked all of them and the closest ones that might cause a problem are the themes where the links are blue, but it's not that hard to read them.
Back on topic, I already have the next bug ready for posting once this one is solved.

You mean it will cause the pepper spray to be in front of layer 3?
blurredd

Minmay has got most of it. He's just missing one small part. And Blacky, in the screenshot, Spaz appears to be behind a background layer.

On to the next bug:
http://www.jazz2online.com/d3/flagcapture.png
Another easy one, but it isn't general knowledge. The level is 20x15, uses just one layer, and has only two events. And in case you're wondering, the start position is where the blue Jazz is.
So, the question is, how was the flag captured?
Nielsje
May 31, 2005, 01:00 AM
Ehm... the red rabbit kiled the blue rabbit at the point where the red rabbit is located, and the blue rabbit warped back to the start position. During this warp he grabbed the flag :p
...just an idea :)
blurredd
May 31, 2005, 01:33 AM
That's one method, but not how it was done. I probably should've been more specific, but instead I'll just say who's right and who's wrong.

I was hoping that more people would try to figure out the latest bug since it exposes a flaw present in most TB levels and gives attention of another flaw. But, since EvilMike knows what it is, and Dizzy figured it out (it's not that difficult really), I might just post the answer soon.

It helps to do some testing first, and it has a somewhat similar answer to the first bug in this thread.
blurredd
Jul 23, 2005, 11:56 PM
Since no one else has the answer, I'll explain the bug. The first thing you need to know is how JJ2 handles player positions for clients that join or rejoin a server. Better yet, I'll just focus on rejoining players. So it's known that the server stores positions of players after they leave, as seen in the seeker hole problem. And most people would assume that the player position (where you could see a "lag clone") simply moves from where the first client left to where the new player starts in the level. That's not the case since there's an extra path in the middle, which is one to the top left, and then to the start position. I'm not sure exactly why it happens, but it does. In case you got lost in my explanation, here's an image that should help:
http://www.jazz2online.com/d3/flagcapture2.png
Capturing a flag on rejoin isn't as much of a problem as capturing a flag through death (not necessarily dying on the flag) or through warping since these last two cases can happen often within a single game. Fixing all of these problems isn't needed for a normal CTF level, but should be a concern in making levels for gametypes such as Team Battle and Assassination. My solution (for TB) looks something like this:
|| BB-W1 RB-W2
||
Playing ||
area ||
||
WT3 WT4 || W3-WT1 W4-WT2
BB=Blue Base System
RB=Red Base System
W=Warp
WT=Warp Target
The "base system" (as I'm calling it) is just two bases for the same team properly set up within tubes going to the right. All of the bases are placed at the top right of the level (the higher the better). The pipes divide the two areas of the level, and each dash indicates the two should be connected (most likely with tubes). The start positions and the Jail 2 concept should be placed to the left of each base system. I highly recommend aligning the warp from the base system with the warp target below, and making that warp target as close to the bottom as possible. WT3 and WT4 in my example can be placed just about anywhere in the playing area (I also recommend using different ID's for the warp targets that lead to the arena, but it is optional). Of course if you understand everything I've mentioned and can see why I designed my system that way, you can just use whatever system you feel like using without having any problems. This is all I have to say on this subject for now.
White Rabbit
Jul 24, 2005, 01:51 AM
Couldn't you just physically avoid the problem by building your TB level so that no matter where you die, you cannot possibly capture the flag by going, via the shortest route, I presume, to the top-left corner? If you, for example, are planning to build a rectangular level, you could just place both bases in the top-right corner instead, because that's the opposite direction in which people leave/rejoin.
