I've got a question to ask, out of purely personal interested (this will be related mostly to Dutch ppl). How much do you know about the land reclamation schemes of the Netherlands? I'm not just talking about Project Delta, but also of the rest (if any).

I'm sorry to hear that, is there something i can do to help you? Like offer a bucket for instance? :(

This page is also quiet interesting, a lot of geographical info about the Netherlands and such.

Oh yeah, I forgot. I wrote this at a school computer and I was thrown off by a teacher, who said I wasn't allowed to listen to Jazz music. ;P I was going to mention the fact that I didn't want any URLs and just your knowledge (cause I can look stuff up on the internet myself, see :p).

Hey, just answering the question folks....

Well if everyone was to share that they don't know ANYTHING, WR would have a wonderfully great lot of replies that are wonderfully useless to him.
Pff.

That you're the last person who should complain about others posting meaningless, senseless and annoying stuff, which I vividly recall you doing numerous times.

I've told you already on IRC, but never finished. For those who don't know: land reclamation means reclaiming land from water, and that's what the Netherlands are famous for. Here are the waterworks:

- De Afsluitdijk (meaning "Sealing Dyke" even though you can consider it a dam): Finished in 1933 (I think) by an engineer called Lely, The Afsluitdijk marked the beginning of land reclamation. It was constructed to seal the Zuiderzee (South Sea), a sea that covered the nothern middle part of the country. Because the only opening to the sea was up north, it was easy to build a dam to seal it away from the sea, effectively turning it into a lake, dubbed "IJsselmeer" after the river that ends there.
- Flevoland: what I consider our greatest success. Flevoland is our 12th and youngest province, but what seperates it from the rest of the country it's that it's completely artificial, reclaimed land from the IJsselmeer. It's divided into three parts, analogue to their creation date; Noordoostpolder (Northeast "polder", polder is our word for reclaimed land"), which is the only part attached to the mainland and was an extension of an existing province at first; Noordelijk Flevoland (Northern Flevoland) and Zuidelijk Flevoland (Southern Flevoland): together both form a big artificial island. As a homage to the engineer who started it all, the province capital, Lelystad, is named after him.
- Markermeer / Markerwaard: as far as I know, it's a planned extension to Flevoland, but the project's been postponed indefinitely due to lack of funds. The only thing that did reach completion is a dam dividing the IJsselmeer in half: the new part's called the Markermeer.
- the Delta Plan: The great flood of 1953, dubbed the "watersnoodramp" ("Water Emergency Disaster"), that flooded the Southwest province called Zeeland ("Sea Land", it's a collection of islands and penninsulas) was the reason for the creation of this plan. What happened during the flood was that the sea locally rose to exceptionally high levels in a short time, and because roughly a quarter to a half of Zeeland is directly connected to the North Sea, it flooded in no time. The flood took hundreds of thousands of lives. So the Delta Plan was created. The plan is nothing more than a series of flexible dams between the seperate islands of Zeeland. I say "flexible" because when the sea rises to a dangrously high level, the dams can close and seal the sea away from the islands. Ingenious at the time :) It should be noted the southern-most opening wasn't dammed: the Westerschelde, which eventually connects to the harbor in Antwerp, Belguim.

Yeah, why did I leave so abruptly, Jelze? :D Thanks guys, I think that is all the information a person who's life doesn't depend on the land reclamation needs. :D

Btw, if this southern-most part wasn't dammed, does it mean that ppl there are dammed when another big flood comes? ;D Pardon the pun.

Yes, (-)(-)(-)(-) the south.

I don't think so, there are many dikes etc. which prevents the people from Walcheren and Zeeuws-Vlaanderen from being flooded again. In fact, I believe there would be even more risks if the southern-most part WAS dammed.

Now I complain, wah wah. Well you can't do anything about it, so you might as well quit.
