You may upload a custom image (an 'avatar') that will display beneath your name to the left of your posts. There are several restrictions, however, that avatars must heed.

Avatars must be exactly 48x48 pixels in image size, and must be no larger than 3KB (3072 bytes) in file size.
Avatars may not be animated.
Avatars must follow all existing board rules for image appropriateness.
As avatars are hosted on our servers, they must be legal. This means that you cannot use a copyrighted image without permission from the copyright holder.

If you do not want to see avatars, you can disable them in your options in the user control panel. Likewise, if you want to see them and they aren't visible, you can enable them in your options. The default setting for new registrations is to have them enabled.

To upload an avatar, go to the user control panel ("User CP" in the navigation bar), and select "Edit Avatar" from the navigation bar on the left side.

Don't resurrect dead topics, and avatars will never grow here! =D

Topics here are allowed to be revived, because it'd be a bit silly to open another topic to discuss the same subject. That said, I don't even know if it's possible for non-admins to open new topics here. So go ahead ;)

OK, small avatars, OK. But why EXACTLY 48x48? If I want, for example, 27x34?

You could easily just have some transparent space around your avatar to fill the rest of the 48x48ness, but you're right; it seems strange not allowing smaller dimensions if wanted.

Thanks! Only why such small? (joke:))

It's a valid question, Lena. The majority of forums have 100*100. I appreciate that an avatar is allowed, but the fact that it is so restrictive kind of relegates its usefulness to a token move.

The only thing that 100*100 might affect is that double height could lengthen posts made without a signature.

How many people do you know that don't have a signature?

It seems very much like 48*48 is an arbitrary number plucked from the air without any experimentation with what's within the bounds of suitability.

And the 3kb file size is shockingly small. Most pics seem to have a minimum size of around 3kb regardless of image data - 10kb is much more reasonable if the aim is bandwidth limitation.

If you link to an off site avatar I do believe it ignores filesize.

The answer to that question is rather obvious from the forum announcement, isn't it?

Odin

Personally I'd like to see the image size limit bumped up from 3kb to 5kb, mostly for reasons Krezack posted (3kb being a low minimum for .jpg and .png pictures).

Stijn is a admin and it's basicly his forum or something. So he can have whatever avatar size as he wants. He's only one person so it's not gonna be taking up much space.

Seriously though, there's something very messed up with the avatars system (causing all avatars to reset somehow) and that was the result of me testing some stuff (uploading a random image). Expect my avatar to change a few times more until I got it figured out.

Troglobite
Nov 5, 2010, 11:02 PM
Perhaps, my friend, Hunter, you do not inspire confidence that I am from Russia. (Nothing personal or nationalistic). I want to say the following: type team of artists, programmers, and all that I do what I can share with you this story, and innovations that we want to introduce our game.

Via google translator. Better watch yourself, Hunter. The spambots know you by name now.

Jgke
Nov 6, 2010, 04:34 AM
Mr Hunter, you're absolutely right! The game will be done in the style of 2D, but the objects are three-dimensional! And at the expense of care, I offer the following: What would you like to see in the new part? And, speaking about the game, story and details I can share only with you. But I fear that our conversation we will continue until tomorrow, maybe today.

Google translate indeed works.

I noticed people having 75x75 avatars and I made myself one that's still 2KB in size, then put it on an external website (imgur). It's still getting resized. What's going on here?

Who has 75x75 avatars?

Seren
Jan 18, 2014, 09:09 AM
Hare, DennisKainz, Robo4900, KRSplatinum and perhaps a couple of other people I forgot, newcomers I guess. User CP also states: "Note: Images must be exactly 75 by 75 pixels and 10.0 KB or less."

DoubleGJ
Jan 18, 2014, 09:40 AM
Note: Images must be exactly 48 by 48 pixels and 3.0 KB or less. Only GIF, PNG, and JPEG images are allowed.
This is what my CP says. Something's odd here...

All avatars are equal, but some are more equal than others.

Torkell
Jan 18, 2014, 11:37 AM
I think I've got it. Basically, anyone who's passed email verification and made at least 1 post can create 75x75 avatars. Anyone who hasn't passed those two normally can't create avatars, with some exceptions which allow 48x48 avatars. The exceptions presumably allow 48x48 because that was the old default.

@DoubleGJ: it looks like you've not verified your email address but you're lucky enough to fall into one of those exceptions. Verify your email address and you should be able to upload a 75x75 avatar.

DoubleGJ
Jan 18, 2014, 12:49 PM
Yeah, uh, I didn't even KNOW there's any e-mail verification here. I even looked in my mailbox and there's nothing there, even though I've never emptied it. The e-mail account I use is provided in my JCF account, alright. Can't find any option to re-verify, either.

Apparently so. Unverified users shouldn't be able to post anything at all. DoubleGJ's account is one of a few exceptions due to other reasons, but I doubt they were granted that exception when they first signed up (it's to do with super-secret group membership).

@DoubleGJ: I think I've managed to email you the verification/activation link.
