No you can't create your own characters. We need the source code to do that and Epic has not given it to us yet. Yes Lori is playable but only in TSF which is an addon to 1.23. So, to play her you will have to buy TSF. The picture of Lori means it requires TSF to play that level.

Ok, first some facts about Jazz Jackrabbit 2.

As of now, there are two major versions being played: the regular version, known as v. 1.23 and The Secret Files, known as TSF or v. 1.24. TSF is an "add-on" (it's actually a seperate game) for the regular JJ2. It had improved features as well as a new character: Lori.
TSF had two problems however: it was released only in Europe, and it wasn't compatible with earlier versions, like v. 1.23 mentioned before. The only compatibility is that it can play levels made with the v. 1.23 level editor, for the rest isn't.
Since levels and tileset made with the TSF level editor can't be played with v. 1.23 they have a Lori icon next to them to indicate they're for TSF.

And of course, BloodRabbit beats me to it

to play her you will have to buy TSF.
No, you don't have to buy it, you just have to get it. Stop forcing people to pay for a game that nobody cares about anymore.

You can also play as Lori in Christmas Chronicles, so the proper distinction would be "1.24 or later", not "1.24".

actually there was a demo that allows me to play as her. either that or TSF is a pretty lame add-on.

Last I checked quite a few people cared about JJ2/TSF enough to play it, to host servers, to make new tilesets and levels, to make replacement listservers, to brag about battles in the tavern...

(besides, telling people how to illegaly get JJ2/TSF is not allowed here. The admins get a bit jumpy about that)

Besides which, "Abandonware" is a fictional term for aging software. Programs described as abandonware are still commercial software and illegal to download.
