I started to program a brix-type clone in PHP a little while ago, which can be found at http://www.pragun.net/brix (dead).

However, I decided to try to actually create the game (as in an exe file) and I found some software to help me do so (called Blitzmax).

I'm looking for people to make levels.

If anyone'd be interested in helping, post here.

The current showcase for the project can be found here:
At Coder's Workshop (http://www.codersworkshop.com/viewshowcase.php?id=257)

The Official website for the project is here:
At The Official Site! (http://www.pragun.net/boxed)

But I can't extremely superb uptime for the latter (thou I'll try).

There's also a released version there, not many levels because I'm looking for creators before a really nice version comes out.

Edit: You can now download the game at the official game website, http://www.playboxed.com

Nice! I loved the Brix games...when I actually had a PC old enough to run them. I'd say you're off to a pretty good start.

DOSBox wasn't created just for Jazz 1, you know :P

VDMSound is better than DOSBox. You don't have to adjust the running speed, and you have control over many settings. I used it once to get King's Quest 6 (Windows version) to run on my current computer. It ran perfectly except for a little mouse cursor glitch (Wouldn't update until you moved the mouse out and back in the window).

VDMSound is not better than DOSBox in any way. It requires hideous OS integration and has no working uninstall feature. DOSBox doesn't even need to be installed in the first place. You just put it in a folder and it works.

Explain to me how to get King's Quest 6 (Windows version) running in DOSBox. It can't really be done. VDMSound is more powerful.

It requires hideous OS integration

What are you talking about? All you have to do is install a single program.

and has no working uninstall feature.

Yes it does. Have you looked in the Add or Remove Programs control panel by any chance?

Yes, this war of the DOS emulators is very entertaining and all, but it has nothing to do with the original topic.

I think you've made a very good Brix remake, Spzzyman. I'll look into making brick sprites and levels.

EDIT:

...That is, I thought the PHP version was excellent. Apparently, you've got your .zip password protected, so I can't actually get the executable onto my computer.

The PHP version was slow. The ZIP was passworded, so I couldn't play it. I could make the logo and backgrounds.

Yeah, the game is pretty good, but it doesn't work real well in PHP, because it has to load the page again each time you make a move. What is the level code submission thing for though? I don't quite understand what its purpose is.

If you're going to help with graphics, please show me first what you're work would look like (at least a 800x600 title and 32x32 tile brick)

if you want to help with levels, just send me a private message, I'll give you the zip's password and/or an updated version.

(edit: I removed all of the screenshots)
Find my project showcase on "Boxed In," here: Boxed In (http://www.codersworkshop.com/viewshowcase.php?id=257&read=no)

So as you can see, the level making people don't really need any programming knowledge, just a mind to create easy, medium, and insanely hard levels =]

Spazzyman, you have yet to give us a working download... the zip is passworded and you have disabled the download on your Boxed In page. Unless the demo is a private demo, that is.

It is private until I reach a certain number of levels for the game, and hence I'm saying, if you want to help with levels, private message me..

and the download on the page isnt disabled, I just didn't upload it to a reliable host :P

I created a few backgrounds, although they're not as cartoonish as you requested, more ambient like in the original game. Should I still upload them?

Well...a few weeks and a recode later..

here's a status update:

Local High Scores Implemented
Base for level editor finished

Port of 19*60 levels Vexed levels ported
Graphics redone (incl. new backgrounds) - 5 in all
Support for BOTH directX7 AND opengl

Currently at version .37

Heres some screenshots:

I still need level creators but more importantly I need some music composers, I just need some 30second music loops to use within the game. If you're interested email me (pragun AT gmail.com) -- I will be checking that a hell of a lot more often than here, because I might forget.

it's alive again. yay. no school (almost).

looking for a july 2006 release.

level creators still desired, but not required.

view a 30 second clip here (http://img152.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bi6aj.swf&width=640)

status:
i've also begun making my own levels. about sixty done in the past three days.
goal: 125 at time of release, more after...
phasing out vexed levels since i don't technically have permission to use them in a commercial game (not yet(?)...dunno)...

sound effects almost done (95%) and game music is in progress (30%)

horrible graphics issues with ogl/dx...trying to code some fixes..
uses projection matrix to work in 640x480,800x600,1024x768 resolutions

level editor basically complete ("test level" bug left)

level packs now rated on a scale of 1-5 for difficulty

bonus points now given for scoring > 4 block matches at once

...too many fixes to list here. lots of little things.

current version is .48 (which means at least 11 fixes from .37)

is anyone still willing to volunteer? --> (pragun at gmail dot com)

I found it extremely fun, and that was from only 10 minutes of gameplay, heck I haven't even started messing with the editor yet. I'd definetly would pay for it.

I just found out you needed 30 second loops for the gameplay which I am great in ;( (blacky can prove this)

Thanks for the great feedback, everybody! It's encouraging...and for those of you forum readers, if you haven't tried it, go ahead and try it.

@Erik, this thread has been up for so long and I posted the help request in August 2005. Alberto beat you to the loops by 9 months :-P (January 06). Maybe next time.
