View Full Version : Two lost Jazz 2 music files from Basehead?

Recently while browsing around ftp.modland.com I have noticed these two odd files:

ftp://ftp.modland.com/pub/modules/impulsetracker/basehead/jazz2-atlantis.it
ftp://ftp.modland.com/pub/modules/impulsetracker/basehead/jazz2-dreamland.it

Apparently, they were composed by Basehead exclusively for Jazz Jackrabbit 2, but were never used. Wonder why?

And what are the "Atlantis" and "Dreamland" levels? Ideas scrapped during development?

impressive found PiZZa, I like the tunes. However the tunes remind me more about the JJ1 soundtrack then Jj2.

I have just downloaded them and I'm listening to them now.

I think Epic just wanted to release the game so soon that they didn't complete it very well, and it's sad, I'd like to have seen more from ths game...

Ditto, however that might mean these tunes were made early on in the development.

They could be Beach and Psych, I suppose.

Last I checked Beach does not like like an atlantis, assuming the music file would be of the same name as the set.

Beach was originally called "Dock", but I guess that's still different. In any case, look at whare.

I think it'd be very possible for there to have been an Atlantis level planned. Having only two official levels with water (and only one where you could actually swim in it) seems rather illogical, in my eyes. That, and it would've fit nicely into the second episode.

Though, I have to agree, the music doesn't sound quite JJ2 style.

I believe these ideas were thrown out just like the Pig World. Too bad, I'd like to see some sort of Atlantis in JJ2...

Haven't heard of Dreamland, however I can confirm that an "Atlantis"-level was originally planned, however never finished. It's nice to see that tunes for these levels were made nonetheless, and still snuck out as well. :)

..wot.

Pig World? A confirmation that an Atlantis was planned? Where do you guys get all that information and why don't you share any of it except for mentioning them in some sporatical obscure threads? *nudge*

We scurry the internet, collect old magazines and plow through ancient interviews for every tidbit of information. :P And then... just simply forget to mention it until someone else asks for it. :+
Okay, more info then. If I remember correctly it was Alex who first mentioned the existence of an Atlantis-level. I however didn't know that he had finished the music for it and released it as well. So it's nice to see that he has. :)

There already is an Atlantis tileset for TSF. See if it fits. :p

But the song isn't from Alex, it's from Basehead

Oops, yeah. Good point. Still, someone mentioned it. I think it came up indeed around the time the "other" Atlantis tileset was released.

Seeing as Epic most likely planned to make each level go with a different music, I assume that they planned to use Dreamland in the second/secret Psych level... Most likely the secret one, as Dreamland gives you the feeling of an empty, deserted land (in my opinion at least), which is what secret Psych level was presumably going to be.

Pig World? That's...kind of...weird.

Not necessarily... they might just not have put any events in. It's not like we have many other "levels in progress" to compare it to and see what order things were placed in.

Was Planet of the Pig JJ2, then? I can never remember.

However the tunes remind me more about the JJ1 soundtrack then Jj2.

The instruments used in those songs are much more advanced than the ones in JJ1. The instruments used in the JJ1 soundtrack were much more simplistic. I couldn't imagine these tunes being used in JJ1.

EYE CEN'T REED? :o

I said: "However the tunes remind me more about the JJ1 soundtrack then Jj2". I didn't say it could be used in JJ1. How on earth did you came up with that idea? :7

I believe these ideas were thrown out just like the Pig World.

The Pig World never exisited and wasn't planed to be in any of the JJ versions. It is actually a joke about one of Disguise tilesets: PiGgY (http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/downloads/info.php?levelID=2205).

No I'm pretty sure Planet of the Pig was an idea left out, the only way to prove this is to see if anyone knew about PotP before Piggy. TO THE TIME MACHINE!

... Erm, do we have any time machines?

I know I had heard about it before the tileset.

When we were creating TSF, Alexander Brandon had some of his buddies create music samples we could use. We had ideas for a lot of different tilesets, but in the end we couldn't make them all. We even had a Chinese-style tileset idea with lots of oriental themes, Chinese/Japanese writings, archetecture etc..

I think the Dreamland idea was a weird environment, with lots of weird/squeue'd themes, much like how your dreams are sometimes a mix of real-world events. In the end, when it came to ideas to draw the tileset, it would have been too similar to the Psych tileset in terms of it being a fantasy-like land with strange images and things that didn't entirely make sense.

Atlantis was abandoned in favor of the other tilesets we went with. Swimming in JJ2 was never really a strong environment. When it came to selections, this obviously wasn't selected.

Nowadays it's pretty cool to find the remnants of JJ2 that didn't make it in the game. Like those tileset ideas would probably be cool to see, but I'm guessing they weren't really kept around.

Yeah, I had this idea for Devil Dash Episode 2 ever since I finished Metal Slug 2. =P Need to finish Episode 1 first though.

Sounds a whole lot like Agama's Dimensions (Sirius) tileset. Except for the fantasy land stuff.

A funny thing I noticed while playing levels with water is that they're more enjoyable when the player is tempted to often get in and out of the water. I believe the Atlantis level would require itself to be fully underwater and such wouldn't be so fun.

Too bad Jazz can't drown under water or else a level with a tileset like Atlantis would be more challenging and fun.

Heck, too bad there's only two types of enemies that really work underwater. One thing that made me dislike the underwater parts of the beach levels was the lack of variety- few enemies, no possibility really for hurt events (you can just swim over them), etc.

Wish they were created, but the idea for the tilesets were scrapped while things were still in the Design Doc stage. Nick & Dean only drew the tilesets for the ideas that were keepers.

Just as well, why were most of the tilesets edited later on? Castle became brown (A yellow/purple color scheme is a lot more original and cooler for a castle as opposed to the boring brownish scheme Nick adopted later on IMO), Jungle's background tiles were changed and changed back, and Diamondus was completely redrawn.

Maybe the older version of Castle was too confusing?

Well. I think these two tune just don't fit into Jazz's style. It's something totally different, slow, quiet, peaceful. They are made by Basehead, as no other tune. So..? By my opinion, this was made before they (Epic) had known who from them will make Jazz2 music.
