Yes, it took so much time that the programmers stopped working on it. They reseased a demo, though... But I'm not gonna tell you about it. >:-D

If the full version is illegal, can I download the demo, if it isn't illegal? If it isn't illegal, where can I download it ?

The full version doesn't exist, and the demo is illegal.

Wow.
People need to research more before they ask.

If memory serves, even the Jazz model used in Razz Arena is technically illegal, since all material in the demo is not allowed to be used.

FQuist
Sep 27, 2005, 02:27 PM
Does the game use materials from JJ3? That would make it illegal to distribute, yes.

Noogy gave piet permission to use his model.

What I don't understand is why they are disallowing the release of the beta. If the beta gained popularity and the people like the concept and show their support then should that be enough of a reason for a developer to continue working on it?

One of the issues is that the demo contains an unlicensed engine. They would have to shell out thousands of dollars to license it to make it legal.

DoomFrost
Sep 28, 2005, 04:00 AM
Even if the engine is old and not used anymore?

White Rabbit

JJ3 uses the UT99 engine.

JJ3 uses the UT99 engine.
I just had to clarify this.

As far as I recall, JJ3 uses an old build of the Unreal Tournament engine, a modified Unreal Engine 1. There is no UT99. Just because the game was released in '99 does not make it UT99. The Unreal Tournament's 2003, 2004 (Unreal Engine 2) and the to-be-released 2007 (the Unreal Engine 3) have years in their names because Epic chose to name them that way. The original Unreal Tournament is just that; Unreal Tournament, U.T. No '99'.

Sorry. I see that all the time on other forums and it just bugs me. :)

Yeah but it's called UT99 to avoid confusion with UT2K4/UT2K5. If you just say "UT", not everyone understands you mean UT99.

Back on subject:

Another issue that makes the Demo illegal, is that it's not a real public demo at all! It's a so-called Publisher's Test demo, used to show elements of the game to publishers who may become interested in releasing it. It was never meant for public release, because the game was never finished.

Also, the game itself was being worked on in the creators' spare time and with their own money, Epic wasn't financing it. At the last moment, the demo was compiled and shown to the publishers of JJ2, G.O.D. games and Project 2 Interactive. G.O.D. wasn't interested because with JJ2 they lost money (they would go bankrupt a few years later), and Project 2 Interactive had already gone bankrupt. So the project came to a nasty end.

Also, JJ3 is an outdated game by today's standards, so it's not that appealing for release.

Sorry I have to repeat myself, but that's why you have public betas. If people got to try a 3D Jazz, it would have gained an audience, especially since Jazz is all about guns, jumping, and running (which makes for a very good FPS). With multiplayer modes, Jazz3D could have been a good Unreal clone only it would be cartoony. If it gained a good audience wouldn't that made the publishers show interest? Sorry for the questions, but it really ticks me off that publishers will cancel games only because it doesn't generate enough money to fit in their wallets.

Another thing if it's Epic's franchise I can't see why they would have to shell out money in licensing the engine. They already own it so shouldn't they have the freedom of doing whatever they want with it?

Public Demos are only given out when the developer is sure the game will be published. You need a publisher for that. The JJ3 team didn't have a publisher yet so it's obvious why they didn't make the demo public (this is only one of the many reasons though).

And I keep repeating myself with this: Even tho it was made with characters owned by Epic, Epic was not financing it, therefore it was not directly responsible, nor involved in the development: JJ3 was a freelance game, worked on by a freelance crew. Because it was freelance, the developing team would have to pay Epic royalties for using their Unreal engine if they wanted to publish any part of the game.

Epic is not a publisher.
EPIC IS NOT A (-) PUBLISHER.
JAZZ 3D IS NOT A FPS.

Dont you have public betas when a game is ready to publish anyways?
