Of course Harry Potter is not demonic. A little fanstasy story with a kid that rides a broom stick and a few evil things does not make it demonic, Harry Potter books are fun to read http://jazz2.nagcentral.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Demonic isn't the term. It has nothing to do with demons... witchcraft is a more likely term for those who wish to argue that point.
Anyhow, I don't believe that it's wrong. I don't know if Rowling's like that, but somehow, I doubt it.

I do doubt she is. And I don't think they are demonic or wotever everyone said. So they're about witches & wizards, big deal. Some people who believe that they are are twisted.

Uhh, Harry is a little kid, rides a broom stick, catches a golden snitch, and kills Voldemort (sp?) in every book and he still is alive as a wierd, evil spirt that is called he-who-must-not-be-named.

Yes, Steel Talon. That's why I was kind of iffy about them at first. But the question is, is it practicing witchcraft? Is reading about a liar lying? Is hearing about a murderer killing?

You have a point, Addie, but I don't know. . .

Despite how it may sound, I *was* asking a question. I'd just like someone to point out the evil in it, because priorly, nobody's been able to give me a good reason.

I do not see how such a book can mean harm. Fantasy or not. Fantasy is FANTASY. It's to fantasize about.
Now, if the book was calling "learn how to be evil in 3 steps"..

You're right, Fquist. The BOOK is not evil, or demonic, or anything like that. It is only a tool for our use. It can be amusement, or twisted out of proportion.
I suppose that somebody could say that guns and knives are evil because they can be used to kill people, or that say cocaine and morphine are evil because they hook people, but guns and knives are also tools, and can be used for food and hunting, and cocaine and morphine (well I don't know about cocaine but I do know morphine) are also used as medicine. So while I don't think that Harry Potter is DEMONIC or EVIL, I still stand by the verse I quoted. Not to say that I haven't read them, but when I heard that verse I quit. I don't see anything evil about it. You could, I suppose, if you were really carried away, decide to read nothing but the Bible, but I think God gave us the ability to read for a reason. Books are good.
Sorry. I got carried away there. Didn't mean to preach or anything, this is my opinion only.
Admael
March 31st, 2001, 03:13 PM
But the thing is... why is it wrong? If I practiced it, yes, it would be horribly wrong. Witchcraft is evil, I agree. However, reading about witchcraft, especially when it's as watered down as most childrens' books are today (having no intent on sparking evil), I do not consider it to be an offense.
I've read a little, and do not enjoy her books much at all. But my case against Harry Potter isn't strong enough to suggest that others shouldn't.

K'mon. I have GOT to agree with that. (It Can't be Denomic if it was a bestseller, right? http://jazz2.nagcentral.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif )

Eh, don't take it too far. Society is quick to accept just about anything, set aside strong viewpoints.
I still believe that Harry Potter isn't really evil, however.

Sometimes I wish that school was like that and wizardry was real, I mean, look how much freedom they have, they can go where they want, do what they want, and their lessons aren't just paperwork and junk. And quiddich, if it was real, I mean, baseball would die along with football, soccer.. (except with Dean Thomas)...

Pokemon is an example of slavery
but people still play it.
You hear stories on the news about men and women who kill 15+ people at schools, but do you still listen?
Quake III and games much like it involve killing.. so what makes that right?
History has a list of many murders, but they continue to teach it in schools.
There is excessive cussing in music, but we continue to listen to it.
The word "violence" is relative. I could take a hammer and smash a cockroach to oblivion, and it's still violence.
Evil is all around us, we live in a world of it. Why don't world leaders want world piece? Because they hate other various contries. Why are there so many wars? And those, they kill millions, and what justifies that?
So why is a book "evil" or "demonic" just because society has put a bad label on witchcraft and are open to all other types of violence, but can't accept magical powers and a few evil men? Voldemort is about the equivelent of the real world's Hitler.
Violence is relative, and so is evil. It's also everywhere. So why !!!! a book just because it has these real world elements?

You have a point, but...
Would you benefit somehow by reading it? Would you be better off? It's a choice you have to make, I guess, and no-one else can make it for you. I don't listen to bad music, read horrid things in the newspaper, or that sort of thing, but I can't tell you what's good for yourself...

I'm not saying that playing Quake III or something is going to make you kill, so in that light, reading Harry Potter will not make you point a stick at some kid, waving it while yelling strange (latin) words and saying "Hah! I killed you and yo momma!"... j/k.
Someone quote me so I feel that this was as good as I thought it was.

Heh... This is REALLY weird reading about you guys talking about Harry Potter. I happen to be from around the area of Britain that J.K. Rowling is originally from.
I've never read a Harry Potter book, but here's some trivia:
Rowling actually based the books on games she used to play with her friends when she was a kid, so the books themselves spring from nothing more than harmless fun. H. Potter's scar is based on the fact that she & her pals used to climb trees during these games, and kept getting cuts and bruises from falling out http://jazz2.nagcentral.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif
Finally, the real Harry Potter is actually a man named Ian Potter, who still lives in the area - Rowling liked his surname, and so used it for Harry in the books.
No, I don't think Harry Potter is a bad influence. Same way I don't think games are an instrument of Satan, as the tabloid press used to (and some still do) say.
If it encourages a child's imagination in a positive way (and reading, etc. is a good way to do just that), than I think it's a good thing.

I'm assuming you're from Jersey (I dunno, you may just have chosen that name).
I have listened to portions of one of the books (the first...?).
There is nothing wrong with stuff like that in a book. I mean, one of the best booksets written IMO - Tolkien's Lord of the Rings had wizards etc. in it. And what is wrong with witchcraft anyway? It's not like you're going to really do any magic...
This said, I don't particularly like (or dislike) Harry Potter...

Nah. I'm not from Jersey. I'm from Bristol, England. I'm Jersey Devil - named after the game on the PlayStation (I run the first & only fansite Jersey City Hall (www.GameSquad.freeservers.com) ).
I agree that the tabloids / other parties take games / books etc., way too seriously, and it always seems to be when everyone is enjoying them. I still say that if it encourages the imagination, it is a good thing. http://jazz2.nagcentral.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif

Openly blasphemed God?!? I've read the books and I haven't found anything like blasphemy! (Curiousity, y'know. That's my biggest weakness.)
And Addie, most of the stuff I say on here isn't me. It's my mom. Personally, I like Harry Potter, I've always had an attraction to fantasy.
Urban, the Bible says that witchcraft is evil, as the witches' power comes not from God but rather, the Devil. It is wrong to do it, support it, or have anything to do with it, but Harry Potter has no... um, connection, I guess, to the Devil or God. In fact, I've only come across the name of God once, and that was when Draco Malfoy was taking it in vain...
Mom hasn't even touched one of the books...
By the way, is "The Goblet of Fire" any good? I haven't read it yet.

Que Passa!!!!
Batty Buddy here with some truth:
My eldist cousin is a vary good Harry Potter fan. In fact, she has done the one thing I think any true fan would have done: She has NOT bought all the various Harry Potter junk, and is against the movie. She also is kinda sad that Harry Potter is currently owned by the people who own Pokemon, as she is like me, against said compony. She just reads the books.
As for me, I got into the book series myself so that I could keep up with her on it, as talking to her about nothing in particular is one of my favorite things to do with her. (After all, what are favorite cousins for anyway) I have been entirly for the religion of Wicca, as seen in my comics that one of my charicters is a wiccan. I do not think that any religions are evil and that all should be taken into account for- including dead religions like the greek Gods.
Anyway, enough about my religious veiws, as I don't need anybody getting on my case for what I belive in, I started reading the story, and instantainiously I found a favorite charictor(Hagrid, who my cousin, unfortunatly predicts is going to get killed off before the series is over. Please keep Hagrid alive, he's the coolest thing since sliced bread on a stick.) whom I can relate to. His love of monsters matches my love of, what I would call, Less-widely-considered-'cute' animals, like Slugs, Bats, Gargoyals, and the like. I even cheered for Snape once(if you know who Snape is, you know why this is weird.) in the second book.
Nevertheless: I think anyone who questions weather something is evil or not, at least try it out and give it a chance. I do with everything I'm not sure about.
"I'm NOT a witch, fuzzy, I'm a wiccan! Try to lighten up, this IS the age of political correctness."
-Ms. Leleb(Talking to Snooze after he found her in witches garb- with suns and clouds instead of moons and stars- stirring a couldren.)
