Hello.
I was wondering if it is possible to have running a server without JJ2 needed to run. (A dedicated server program, like Valve has made for some of its games (example: counter strike))
I wouldn't really mind hosting a server for this community...
Sometimes, I also want to join another server while my server is running, but, I dont want to shutdown my server, just for the uptime record :D
I would try to create a dedicated server program, but I'm too lazy to code it, and I couldn't really find any documentation about the JJ2 protocol, and I couldn't really being bothered analysing it... :p
Thank you...

You could try running JJ2 as a service (on 2000 or XP) with the right command line options.

Do you know which are those commands? :-)

JJ2 doesn't have a dedicated server mode like there is for CS and other games. You basically don't have any options other than running JJ2 normally, and just setting it on the lowest resolution on windowed mode and move the window out of the way. You can't even minimize the window because that causes problems. :P

Well, we could try and create one...
We could use a packet sniffer like Ethereal (http://www.ethereal.com/) to see how the protocol works...
We could give it a try... :-/

there IS something that is something like a jj2 dedicated server, but its not publicly avaliable. It's the Console program, and it was written by Overlord. If you want to see it in action, wait till AB8 starts up.

Still, doesnt JJ2 have to be running?
I guess you are talking about this thread: http://www.jazz2online.com/jcf/showthread.php?t=13866 ?

I guess you are talking about this thread: http://www.jazz2online.com/jcf/showthread.php?t=13866 ?Not really. That thread was about console commands that jj2 could really use. Since it's impossible to modify jj2 to accept those without the original source code, the only alternative is to code a program that recognises them and does some things to control the game.

What do the -MAXCACHE command lines do? If you increased the values, would you get no amnesia errors for larger levels, or is it always the maximum value by default when you start JJ2?
