View Full Version : Boss Contest

Okay, I'm sure I'm not the only one who groans when they have to fight Devan Shell in yet another completely bare arena with no obstacles of any kind. Or when a Tuf Boss has its difficulty increased by throwing three thousand generating Tuf Turtle enemies in with it. And has anyone ever shown any interest in fighting the Queen?
These kind of things can be JJNXT fodder.

What I want to see are bosses which make me raise an eyebrow, smile, and maybe mentally raise someone's rating a little. Something awesome. So I'm giving you all a week - the time is short but it's not like you have to make a whole level or anything - to create a boss that I like. Any boss at all. Even a tile boss. Those are cool. Eyecandy isn't required but it makes things better.

I have basically two options for the winner... either I mention your name somewhere (don't know where, I'll give you a list of things I'm working on and you can choose one), or I turn you into a sprite. Your choice. But first you have to win. And all you have to do to win is create a single boss. (You can make more if you like but only one can win.)

Even if you don't take part in this contest, please heed the message. Boss battles are boring by themselves. Make them interesting!

EDIT: By the way, my definition of a boss is fairly loose. Defeating the boss does not have to automatically end the level, nor do you have to actually kill anything.

Question 1: Could we enter multiple times?

Question 2: If 1 = yes, then could we enter in something already uploaded to J2O?

Stuff already on J2O will only win if everything else absolutely sucks, sorry.

"(You can make more if you like but only one can win.)"

I know, but I didn't know if that meant simply more than one boss event, or a whole new boss level. Thanks for clarifying.

Also, the Bilsy boss in HH05 I made just for you (I recall you complaining that Bilsy was rarely challenging) :).

Doesn't really raise the difficulty of the boss that much, but I thought the concept was pretty neat.

Don't forget that you can also block tiles using the B button, but remember the tiles will also be pasted. Events will only come on your tiles if they are attached to a tile or if you hold SHIFT when placing them.

Well, you see, there are a few possibilities in making a new boss.

1) You can make an animation which will hurt you if you touch it. You must destroy a trigger crate to open the 'door' to the ending. Just evade it all the time... Could be quite boring to make, but it works.
2) Have an original boss, put it behind some layer3 stuff and shoot it with Seekers, ElectroBlasters, Bouncers, etc.
3) Be creative! Respawning baddies could also make good bosses, if you do it right.

Or
4)Have an original boss, and force the player to solve a puzzle which leads to the boss' demise upon the puzzle's completion

You can either put another belt event on the end, or increase the speed of the last one.

Well, I found that the Robot boss was probably the worst boss to use for my idea. I found a bug where the camera would lock itself forever until Jazz came back to the area where the robot is. Because of the belts, Jazz is moved out of the screen before the camera unlocks. =p

No rest for the wicked
First, I would have liked to have known this was a TSF file beforehand... oh well.
This level is somewhat related to the idea of a boss... it's a random cooperative level (again, information not given), with enemies, and there are a couple places where some bosses attack you and you don't kill them. It's pretty Spaz biased in one place and the eyecandy is minimal.
I can't manage to envision this level as a boss, though. It just feels like a level.

Demonic Diamonds
First off, this level gets yay points for taking advantage of the greater power offered by 8-bit color.
Anyway, this pits you against Uterus underwater, which has been done before, except this time there are spinning spike bolls and small tunnels and ammo and carrots and food dropping from the sky. So you take advantage of Uterus' initial slow mode to get rid of the spike bolls, and then attack him.
Unfortunately, the level is made a whole lot easier by the fact that you can just lure Uterus out of the water and battle him there, at which point the fight is over in a couple seconds because you have Toaster.
This level looks cool, and it has some good concepts, but then the gameplay ends up being somewhat imperfect.

Boss Conest Entry
I question whether this entry was tested, because you are in no danger for practically the whole of the level. The idea is simple - push a Big Rock far enough that you can pick up a TNT ammo, while the Tuf Boss attacks you. Then use the TNT to blow up a trigger crate which eventually kills the Tuf Boss, but sends some tuf turtles at you.
The execution, unfortunately, is horribly flawed, as I shall demonstrate with this list:

An ice pickup is in the level, so you can freeze the rock and let it move by itself, while staying far enough away from the boss that he doesn't attack you.
By being hurt by the boss's attack in the right place, you can bounce up into the ceiling and pick up the TNT ammo without even going near the big rock.
The tuf turtles are unlikely to cause any harm to you, as you can hide on a vine or the far left side of the level.

The level reminds me of part of some other pack, I think it was RHG.

Unknown entry using Kansas
Given that Kansas has not been released, and the entry has been removed from the internet, I have no way of knowing what this level was like.

And because I can...
Bilsy's Lair
Odin advertises this as having been made for me, so I thought I'd mention it. This pits you against Bilsy (no surprise), but with a sloped floor and a strange [ tunnel thing on the left. However, it fails to increase Bilsy's difficulty or add any particular twist, as you can still just stomp and be immune to all of his fireballs.

Out of those, I guess Demonic Diamonds is the winner. It feels like it has some thought put into it, and it would probably play pretty insanely if you couldn't get back out of the water. Odin, do you have any interest in any of the stuff I mentioned in the first post, or should I just do you-know-what?

n00b
Dec 27, 2005, 02:00 PM
I didn't test mine at all, it was something I slapped together to get the ball of entries rolling. Too bad that ball didn't roll to far.

Odin
Dec 27, 2005, 04:23 PM
Woah, I didn't think I'd win! Cool.

I would like to be sprited in a 48x48 square (doesn't have to be that big horizontally, but i'd like it that big vertically. Draw me as an anthropomorphic penguin wielding dual swords, with a bright blue bandana.

And yes, Demonic Diamonds had some thought in it. I had several rough drafts of it (one making you swim away from a Bolly Boss while you fought him off) before I settled with this.
