Pest Exterminators, or PE, is a team that eliminates pests from the Jazz Jackrabbit 2 listservers. You can be in a clan too, as we're not a clan, but a team!

I am really having trouble with the NetMon. It needs to warn the server not to kick the slot its in, as it spawns a "ghost" to player 32 as of this writing. Hopefully I can fix that soon.

Umm, this list servers aren't in any danger. It's just individual game servers that you're looking out for. Two different things.

Nice script, UF. Try using a normal joining packet ;o Then it shouldn't get into slot 32. Or better yet, take the packet used in jforce, so you don't have to see the player joined message.

'Takeover'? JJ2 is not a country. You cannot invade it. And if you can, putting 'PE' after your name isn't going to help anything. It just makes troublemakers feel special, which is exactly what you do not want. You're just helping them.

Just help assemble information on <a href="http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/wiki/?Jazz_Jackrabbit_2_Security">how to protect JJ2</a>. Fuss doesn't help.

There are other interpretations of 'our' than meaning 'our direct property'. It's "our" listservers in that the listservers run (should run) for the community's sake, their admins answer to the community, and they are used by the community's grace. Shadowrabbit wasn't claiming he held the property rights to your computers.

The lucky people who randomly message me do have a semi-final version of it, featuring more fixes and expanded memory to support large levels and music.

I never needed them because Nimrod already posted something that more or less protects me from lasers. Other fixes weren't really all too important (Why would you freeze a gemring in the first place?).

Reporting serious offences does next to nothing. Most people who are attacked don't run ApprehendJJ2, and even if they do, the IP of the attacker is usually dynamic.

And reporting their name is useless, since anybody can change their name at any given moment.

This is a nice idea, but I fail to see how it merits a clan name. I mean, it's nice to have people spread the word about offenses, and stuff, but having a whole clan based off of it is a bit wasteful. I'd join if I wasn't on a cla<s>m</s>n diet.

The IP of the attacker is more useful than anything.
Especially in reports, which is why we encourage use of ApprehendJJ2. For hosts, you can just press F9 twice and get the I.P's of the current players on the left side of their names.

UNKNOWNNETWORKADDRESS users are usually ghosts. Kicking and/or banning them causes the game to crash. Anyone who actually cares an ounce about protecting their servers knows about them.

The first days were fun when renaming and ghost making was discovered and was totally new to jj2. If you hated somebody, all you had to do is spawn a ghost with the name "ban me" (or another offensive name) in their server and wait untill the host falls for the trap (which they usually did). Banning such "ghost" as we call them today does exactly what one would want it to do - it crashes the server.
Renaming was also fun as you could rename a friend of someone you hated to someone he hated and watch the flamewar start. ;) While I can't say I did any of this, I have witnessed others (not telling names) do it many times.

To be honest my first rename was in theWINNER's server when I was still researching packets. I renamed him to a noname... by accident.

I got some report of Unknown being the crasher from Nimrod too, I'll look into it yet I think it highly unlikely that Unknown crashes servers. He must of took it that his NetMon use was the crashing method ;P

I think it might have been useful if things were actually done to prevent "pests" other than screaming their heads off when a server got crashed. The real problem is that things like this are being created, and influencing these script kiddies to do things that cause them to get attention. Although there would still be crashes, nobody would be getting this much attention and causing pointless things like the Pest Eliminators to be created.

Besides, without any actual power over the list servers, the Pest Eliminators have nothing to go by. Having PE next to your name does not make anyone an omniscent diety capable of preventing crashes, exploits, and world domination. The list server administrators are doing a good enough job, in my opinion, with the policies they already have set.

No. It was a completely different script that I haven't named.The DoS one that you failed to do properly and it resulted in server crash rather than the actual DoS.

Well seem's this is public knowledge now, I might as well confirm.

Unknownfile is indeed one of the main crashers recently active in JJ2. His case is currently being reviewed by the List Server Team, and the outcome will be decided soon. The method of the crash is also being investigated by Overlord and Monolith so that a filter can be made to block it.

The IP the attack was launched from is: 24.42.35.73
Some of you may wish to add this to your block list, some may not. I will not add this IP to the network blocker as of yet, but it is tempting if UF continues.

It is also currently unknown if other crashers are active as well, or if every crash was done by Unknownfile. Matters will be investigated further. I will get back to you as soon as I know more.

And a personal message to Unknownfile, I am rather disappointed. You act like your here to help the community, you do good work with a 1.25 Patch and gain the trust of most of us. Then you go around crashing servers for fun. Shame on you.

If you don't think we know the definition of format, that's just ignorance on your part. Formatting doesn't actually make data go "zoom", it just makes it so that those sectors of a disk can be overwritten and used for something else. The data is still there until it is overwritten. No reason to hate it, because you can get it back.

PE is useless because it does not do anything to help eliminate pests. Nimrod has pointed out publicly that he has recieved no reports from PE thus far. Not a few reports, not even one report. Nothing from PE. Whatsoever. People continue to report malicious people without PE's help, just as they have done before. Therefore, PE has done nothing to increase awareness of hacking protection programs, such as JJ2Apprehend.

PE is a novel idea on paper, but it fails in reality because PE thus far has done no favors for the list server team. Increasing awareness of aforementioned protection programs is good, and encouraging people to report offenses is good as well, but a clan based off of it is not necessary.

Then again, as you and Cooba seem to be engaged in a battle of "Nuh-uh! Yuh-huh!", I'm not sure if you are able to understand my point.

I have thought about my future, Thaspaz.
I want to be an animator. The main reason why I still play this game is because it's my main source of animation inspiration, in fact I will be gone next week for two days to be at a seminar held by a Storyboard Artist up in Boston.

And at the rate Disney is killing itself, yes my future does look pretty sad. But it does me some comfort knowing I'll be making more money than some kid who thinks he's uber-important from getting his copy of JJ2 from Arjan. At least I'll know who to go to when I need fries with something.

The way I see it using PE is like using the post office to send a letter to your nextdoor(Assuming this is Surburbia or an apartment, and nextdoor is a short distance) neighbor. It takes longer, includes an unneccesary process, and theres a chance the letter will never make it to your freind (And if it does, it may be way too late)

I have decided to launch a new campaign to join PE. We are in urgent need of active members. The current member number, 2, is very bad indeed if PE is supposed to survive. If we don't get members within a month or two PE will die.

On the leadership issue I will be willing to pass on leadership to a person who will contribute to the growing of PE. At the moment we have no site (alas my non-existent HTML skills), very few members and crashers running loose unmanaged.
Those willing to apply for leader need to email pinkfurby@hotmail.com with the email title "PE Leadership Request" and explain things they will bring to PE. Deadline is the 1st of April 12:00AM 11+ GMT. Please note that I will stay co-leader if a leader is found.

(I know, it's a little lame but it gets the point through).

The problem is, JJ2 is a game where it's easy to imitate others. Unless you have sure-fire proof, you might end up banning someone who's innocent. Plus, when someone is banned, they will be unbanned eventually, in the time that they were banned they might have learned a lesson and it wouldn't be fair to keep them banned forever.

Not to mention how hard it is to completely ban someone, the list servers only ban ip addresses. If the address isn't static, then all they have to do is reconnect to bypass it. Even if it is static, there are several ways to get past, since it doesn't actualy govern JJ2 servers, just accessing them with a friendly interface.
