View Full Version : Comedy Cafe - inherently unfunny?

The discussion was brought up by me that the very existence of the Comedy Cafe is counterproductive to the funniness in our forums.
The reason, for me, is that threads being in CC<afe> automatically takes away from their element of surprise, as one will already expect a thread trying to be funny. This makes most threads less surprising and completely defeats the point of threads that want to seem like they are serious at the first glance.
So, I'm interested in how you feel about this.
And while you're at it, give the thumb up or down for the existence of our Comedy Cafe.

I'm not against the existence of Comedy Cafe. But I don't like it's function as a spambox. The copycat threads are annoying.

Umm... why would a lacking "element of surprise" remove any possibility of humor? There are plenty of sites all over the internet which exist solely to provide comedy, and their humor value is not destroyed by the fact they are not placed on www.cia.gov or somewhere equally unexpected. People are just using the forum wrong.

Most funny sites use a lot of effort for their humor, making flash animations, comics, stuff like that.
Most of us are pretty much restricted to text and maybe some images, and text has to work in certain ways to work in terms of funniness...
It's kind of like telling jokes. They'll be perceived as less funny if they're introduced by something like "i'll tell you a joke it's teh best joke ever okay here goes:"
People complained about something like this in a thread about "The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny".
That's just the way I perceive it. I'd be surprised if nobody even understands that view...

I moved this to the Forum Questions & Feedback forum.
Most things I have to say about this are already stated in another reply (http://www.jazz2online.com/jcf/showpost.php?p=358108&postcount=41).
I do understand your point, but I think something in the Comedy Cafe is not per sé unfunny because it is supposed to be funny. I agree with Violet that the forum is just used in a wrong way. Now its main purpose is posting "joke" threads, but I think threads like Xobim's (about the worst ad ever) should also go there. The kind of threads that do not contain a joke in the sense of "two man walk into a bar...", but simple amusing stuff, like funny links or so. I've seen it work on other forums and while this community is certainly not like any other I believe it could also work here.

I have no complaints about it, I don't care. Humour can be funny also when expected...I think. I think it should go though, because it's much less visited and misc stuff can cover for the funny stuff since there is plenty of it there too, plus more viewers. I don't visit this forum even cos it's relativly empty.

I do not think it should be the JCF administration's job to police what is funny and what is not.
That being said, Comedy Café is very rarely funny. However, it does serve an important function. It's not the forum's fault that it isn't funny.

I actually question its usefulness anymore. If I remember it was only very popular when it wasn't part of the JCF/JMMB but rather when it was its own forum on Alienator's(right?) separate Jazz comedy site. :)

I think ComedyCafe should be a Miscellaneous Stuff subforum, like Forum Games. I also think that I just made this same post in another thread.

I have to agree with most that's been said, but I also think that it should be demoted to a subforum of Misc., since it's not really used to its full extent anymore.
