Shouldnt Shuri and Fawbob have dealt 10 and 12 damage, respectively?

Double defense cancels out feat, but Abydos cast a spell the turn before and didn't defend which doubles the damage he receives from attacks.

Double defense cancels out feat, but Abydos cast a spell the turn before and didn't defend which doubles the damage he receives from attacks.I felt that maybe I should've clarified that. Technically what Snow Skin does is 4x defense, but, given that it's also a spell, in practice it just doubles it. I'll redo the last turn with different commands (just this once ); ) or amend the text if you want.

The goal of the battle is to keep stabbing abydos, in the most strategic way possible =D

Mainly the canoe. It's a one-turn thing that already took effect. The dispellable things appear in mouseover after the (+) or (-).

Rules question: how does freeze work? Does it prevent the character from doing anything in their next turn (spells/movement/attack/defend), or is it something more subtle?

I think it prevents you from doing anything, including spells, because Fooruman's spells disappeared from the spells list. Most especially Quantum Squaredance

He can't do anything the turn after we cast Hypnotise on him.Note that that means the turn right after he moves. As in, he can't act during my response move to your turn. I know this wording confused some people last time.

Why don't my moves work because the path narrows? They're nearly identical to Adam's. There's not enough space, so we must sacrifice someone.

EDIT: Radium, if you're here.. Are halved attacks rounded up or down? It's pretty important. :p

Abydos' blood-stained jaws lurched and creaked under the crashing force of the magical water. They shuddered, let out a final ear-splitting shriek, and fell limp, never to move again. The contracting of the bridge ceased, and the spikes behind us that blocked our path to the save point and fountain retracted back into the ground.
I sprinted forward and poked the doorway's limp carcass with my spear, just in case. It showed no reaction. I turned to the remainder of the party. "What now?"
"We.. opened the door. I guess we go in," L33tz4n concluded. The accupuncturist handed the needles back to her, bowed, and vanished, and the water elemental simply disappeared in a splash of light.</b>

The two (three?) of us rejoined the rest of the party, who were presently waiting on the bridge.

"He had to go to the bathroom."

There was only one thing left to do before we travelled on. I looked over the side of the bridge, but all I could see below was darkness. I raised my hands towards Abydos and focused my energies, immediately causing a contradition in my previous statement of "never to move again". A zombified light shone from Abydos' eyes, and from the abyss rose the body of Shuriken, held in a cradle of undead Abyss Monsters. They dropped her on the bridge and slid back down into their dark grave as Abydos went silent again.</b>

"I'm game!" he called cheerfully, running into Abydos' open jaws. I heard his footsteps fade off into the distance. I didn't hear him dying, though, which was a good sign.
I and the rest of the party, stepped, slithered and rowed through the gate. As we travelled down the dark tunnel, I turned and looked behind me. A slow hissing noise grew into a shriek; Abydos' serrated teeth slammed themselves shut, leaving us in the dark, with nowhere to go but forward towards a soft red glow ahead.</b>


And with that, I'm going to take a break to go have a happyfun thanksgiving (for non-americans, that's a day when we kill mutant america-chickens called turkeys).

Leetzan looked worst of all. The biting cold that faded through the air as we approached the entrance before us shattered her hopes that the tunnel would lead to a volcano. I felt kind of bad for her; no fur, half a full set of clothes, and half her body laying on the cold ground.
I gave her my sleeping-bag-cloak. If my own clothes and fur weren't enough to survive the cold, I could always skin Faw or Uberbob.

Presumably we were still underground, though I could make out no ceiling or walls. The thick, unearthly red fog blurred the landscape all around me, though I could still make out large, mountainous forms in the distance. I staggered forth in the bitter cold until my arms met something warm. A rusty, heated metal pipe stretched off into the distance before me as well as to either side, the three paths meeting at a rusty metal wheel. The pipe to the left was freezing cold.
"Come through quick!" I called back to the party, hoping my voice could overcome the wind. Fawriel came sprinting out to the pipe, then Araches, Uberbob, and the canoe, carrying Fooruman and L33tz4n.
"Hey, Shuri," Uberbob said, his arms wrapped around the warm pipe, "remember back on Antifoo Isle, when there was that furnace room that was too hot to go through?"
"Yes?"
"Yeah. Good times."

After a short challenge with hoising the canoe over the pipe, the party followed me forward.

The pipe took a sharp right turn up ahead. Before us was a large metal box with a small rectangular indentation containing two metal claws. A pipe led out of the box and across a stream of smoking, opaque blue liquid. I went forward a bit and felt the box and the pipe. They were both colder than ice.

After guessing to myself that the blue liquid was some kind of liquified gas, I took a right and led the party along the same heated pipe. The pipe straightened out, going forward for as far as I could see. I could make out something large and round through the mist to the right.

The coloured numbers near the pipes show if they're warm or cold, and in which state they are warm or cold. Red is warm, blue is cold. (example: the lower wheel has been turned to state 2, thus the left pipe gets warm and the right one gets cold.)
Pink text means that it is not known if the object is warm or cold.

I don't think Faw's machine parts would fit there, would it?

There are two options that I think are the most sensable (I think):

-that round building is a red herring. Lets approach that tower and see if it gets any closer.

-follow the pipe to the left.

The map is not very hard to understand:
The single black lines are the pipes, the red circles are the wheels. The numbers attached to the wheels show in what state they are turned into. The coloured numbers near the pipes show if they're warm or cold, and in which state they are warm or cold. Red is warm, blue is cold. (example: the lower wheel has been turned to state 2, thus the left pipe gets warm and the right one gets cold.)

Currently, we know that the left pipe is the source of the warm liquid and/or cooked spaghetti bolognese. Valves have two values: 0 and 1, 0 being its original state (the state we found it in) and 1 being an altered state (it becomes 1 when we turn the valve). So, as you can see, we have turned both valves, so their values are 1.

Now, the coloured numbers. They're very similar to your 1 and 2 system. Each pipe has a 1 and a 0, and the colour determines whether a pipe is cold or not when the valve has a specific value. To avoid confusion, boxes are used to show which pipes a particular valve affects. If both numbers have the same colour, it means that the temperature is unaffected by the valve's value, although valves from other boxes may affect the temperature.

Now, the longest pipe has a red 01, and a red/blue 01. Using my boxes and my red arrow, you can see that this is not contradictory. It just means that the pipe is cold, that the lower valve is unable to affect the pipe's temperature, and that all the bottom pipes have been deprived of their warm liquid and/or cooked spaghetti bolognese.

The four of them piled themselves on the plate as best they could. The door made a slight clicking noise and shook, but didn't open.
Fooruman bent over the edge of the canoe and gave the metal plate a giant lick. "Miss Ken! This plate tastes of... RELATIVE EQUALITY!"

This must have been leading us back to the tower somehow, because I could see it just on the other side of the rock mass before us. The pipes crossed over a creek of the smoking blue liquid before taking another split. I carefully stepped over the narrow stream (though I could feel a light frost growing on my ankles from just being near it) and felt the pipes. The one on the left was cold, the one on the right was warm. The wheel on the valve was strangely absent.

apparently by the hints radium was kind to drop us, we were supposed to head to the dome and crack it open. What does everyone say? Should we explore pipes <strike>and freeze to death</strike> or should we head back to the dome?

Edit:

Obiously, the puzzle at the dome is weight related. I would have tried standing all on one number before heading off.

I just finished reading ToU 2 and still no update. :(

And whatever happened to these sprites?
Oops, sorry, I forgot this existed. Here's the story: I started drawing new sprites, using vectors because vectors are IN. The new battle system (which is much more computer handled and Risp and I have mostly written the engine for) requires numerous sprites per character. Of course, shortly after I started on the new sprites, I had my finals which took a lot of my free time, and then I recently started my new courses. The sprites don't actually take that long to make, I just don't usually put aside enough time to work on them.
There was discussion about a sprite comic a bit earlier in the thread. If anyone's still interested, I'll release the sprites as EMF files when I'm done. EMFs can be scaled up and down to any size without loss of quality. They can be dropped into Powerpoint, Word, Photoshop (I think) and used like regular clipart.

And, just so people know what UR is talking about: Uberbob (http://www.foxmage.com/L1.jpg) is (http://www.foxmage.com/L2.jpg) not (http://www.foxmage.com/L3.jpg) dead (http://www.foxmage.com/L4.jpg) yet. (http://www.foxmage.com/L5.jpg) The sprites will be scaled down more in the final. I haven't decided how much.

And ah, yes, those sprites. Originally the battle system sprites were going to change depending on the spell effects (those ones are normal, bloodlust, poison, hypnotize, and dead, respectively). Eventually Risp and I noticed this would take WAY too much spritage (taking all the possible combinations into account) and just went with rollover text. I think I still have all Shuri's sprites somewhere, too.

... originally Haste was going to turn people's sprite red. JJ1 tribute most people wouldn't get.

As for that plot hole, by the end of ToU2 I was pretty much just telling Lem to kill time and throw stuff at you. Presumably ToU3 picks up a few hours after the end of ToU2.

Hell, the numbers tell how many people need to be on the plates to open the door......Mr. Gambino already tried that, I believe... and it would open up a new question of who would actually go through the door while it was open.

Anyway!

<b>I drew my sword and dipped it into the liquid. When I removed it, it had a thin layer of smoking ice on its blade. That was disappointing. "I'm going to go see if I can take out the wheel from the last valve," I called to the party.

Looking at map edit: Looking at the T (With no wheel) by the cliff, it looks as if that pipe might connect to the "Box Claw". What would happen if the heat is turned on it? I'm betting that dome is a heater shed, and there's bound to be tools in there (Maybe a valve wheel?)

Now assuming the Dome is right in front of us, Turning the valve on stright ahead would route the heat back to the dome. If we complete the circut, what would happen? It could heat the pipe a lot more, now that the heat is being returned...

"Something must be to the left. I can hear it," I informed the party. I took off along the left pipe. A short walk later, the source of the sound was discovered: the pipe was open. Whatever was once at the end of this pipe was now gone, save for a few stray bits of metal and broken machinery, obscured by the jet of white smoke pouring from the pipe.
L33tz4n quickly slithered over to warm her hands in the white smoke. "What's this?" Faw asked, looking at what appeared to be the only intact machine. He poked the baseplate with his spear, watching the needle on the display move up a bit and fall back down when he released the pressure. "Nevermind. I figured it out."
Uberbob ran to a particuarly large, half-submerged chunk of metal. "Look at the size of THIS item! We need to take it!" He proceeded to try his hardest to unearth the massive piece of scrapmetal.

Well, the scale is most likely there because of the plates with the numbers. As hints ( especially Uberbob's, I think ) and someone else's idea ( WR's? ) suggested, it depends on the weight of the people on it, not their number.

That was when we turned the pipe off to the dome, and wanted to head back without turning the valve. I think it's safe to assume we would become icicles if we move away from the heated pipe.

Fooruman stepped out of the canoe so I could put it on the scale. "40".

"Fooruman, you can't weigh nothing." I looked at the scale, which read 0 lbs. "Okay, how do you weigh nothing? Shouldn't you... er... float around?"
"You see, my good doctor," he began, "I do have a weight. A grand weight, the likes of which you have never seen, felt, or even tasted. However, I also have a negative mass. In most scales, with the exception of metric, these two measurements negate eachother."

Okay, I think I see a pattern here.

The 4 and 3 are the weights needed to open the door. They could be in hundred-point notation (Or something fancy, like the wieght is divisible by three...).

also, no wonder the door did not open! It was basically Shur and Foo's Canoe on #3! that's only 154 pounds. That also means if we use everyone (With mass) on the wieght panels, Foo can head in and find somthing to prop the door open.

So, a command? Examine the scale, then head back to the valve. Turn the valve, and head stright.

Weigh Uberbob without the giant piece of metal (if you can separate him from his inventory...)

Head back to valve, turn wheel, and go left (which is what Xobim said, except we can't go straight ahead from the intersection because there are no pipes in that direction).

Funny thing is, that when you combine the wieghts of Faw, Shuri, Araches, Leetzan and the foocanoe that you get 400. Now, because Fooruman has negative weight, he can counterbalance the weight of Uberbob.

So: weigh Uberbob and Fooruman at the same time to see what the negative weight of Fooruman is. Then follow the command in the above post.

And no, you get 535 pounds. Take away Araches and Shuriken, and you get 300 pounds. We could try having Faw, L33tz4n and the canoe stand on the plate '3', and Uberbob alone on plate '4'.

Yes, go with that. Fooruman is the only one that wouldn't affect the plates, so obviously he has to go into the dome.

So, after that ordeal (resulting in the number 130, and, after which Uberbob decided that carrying a 300 pound piece of metal slowed him down too much and left it), we took off back into the cold, back down the pipe, turned the wheel, and went down the newly warmed pipe to our left. After a short walk we reached another split. The left pipe went into the wall of a cave, on which there was also a large metal door. The right pipe (the heated of the two) went further into the red mists.

Remember that the weight of the whole party is only 665 pounds now that Uberbob has lost his scrap metal.

We should simply try standing on the numbered plates again, with perhaps a Mythslayer or AWA instead of the canoe.

Fooruman claims to have negative mass (post #728). The scales cannot weigh negative mass. Hence to accurately find the mass of Fooruman, we need to weigh him at the same time as someone or something else.

The weight/mass (they're interchangable as far as we're concerned) of Uberbob is known to be 130lb (post #740). The weight of Uberbob's chunk of metal is 426-130=296lb (posts #728 and #740).

So, what would be the best idea here would be to weigh Fooruman *and* that chunk of metal at the same time. This will give us a value x, where x=296+Fooruman. Hence Fooruman=296-x.


Rad: return to scales. Find Uberbob's chunk of metal. Put the chunk of metal on the scales, note down the weight of it, and then get Fooruman to stand on the scales *without removing the chunk of metal*. Note down the combined weight.

I had become accustomed to this kind of crap. "To the third power," I reiterated.
"Yes. Had the scale gone that high, it would have read 2,197,000."

He shrugged. "Probably not. But it's okay, because my mass is much less than that."
"Alright then. Let's go back to the door." Logic never wins against a canoeist.

Some walking and wheelturning later, we were back at the door. I examined it closely; there was no handle, but a large keyhole. I tried putting my fingers in the keyhole and pulling it open, but to no avail. I turned the wheel and tried again. The door still wouldn't open, but light, warm steam sprayed from where the pipe met the cliff face.
"Maybe we need a key," Fawriel proposed.
"No, <i>really?</i> Who would've thought!"
"I'm not usually one to agree, but I think he's right," Uberbob added. Fooruman nodded as well.

"What do you think it does?" Faw asked, examining the contraption.
Fooruman rowed up to the device, leaning over the edge of his canoe and caressing it with his tongue. After a moment of deep thought, he concluded "It's a pump."
"... how do you know that?"
"I checked the filename."

I have changed the location of the tower and edited the river based on what we've seen so far. I think the pipe across the river leads to the tower, and that all bodies of liquid are joined together, but I'm not sure.

I decided to check the river next. I stuck my katana straight down into the liquid. Almost all of it was submerged except for the handle, meaning the river was around three feet in depth. Even if I didn't have to swim, I didn't particularly want to wade it.

The Mythslayer jumped to it, giving the wheel a mighty crank. I heard a faint noise coming from the machine, and suddenly the leftmost gear began to spin like mad, producing a loud "squeeksqueeksqueeksqueek" as it went.
Nothing else happened.
Uberbob looked at the machine. "Hmm.. it almost looks as though something blatantly obvious and easily replacable is missing!"

Anyone else of the opinion that we should head back to the dome and try out the weight stuff? Seems to be the only place where nothing's amiss except for the solution.

Soon, the pipe branched off once again, a cold pipe to the right and a heated one directly before us. The thick red fog surrounded us on all sides, though there was a faint golden glow eminating from the left. I could just barely hear a hissing noise ahead of us.
