The Community Episode

No, this is not another Community Episode but because there was no progress and the organizer isn't active anymore I decided to create a new thread to get this active again. I will accept any help people are offering and let's hope we can get this active again to get one great episode. Also I will send everybody who is on the list a PM to see if he/she is still in and willing to make the next level. People can still sign in for making levels.

The Rules:

-The creator can choose the person who needs to make the next level, if the creator is unable to choose somebody or can't get anyone who wants, everybody who signed in to create a level can volunteer.

-If you are creating a level it has to fit the storyline. The level needs
to be of decent quality, if it's below quality you have to agree that I or somebody else edit or even disapprove the level. The level needs to be playable by all characters including Lori.

-When making your level you have to keep us updated at least once a week. When you can't give us an update for some time because vacation or anything else let us know. If we don't get any updates for some time somebody else may create a new level instead of you.

-When you volunteer to make the next level you have to have time to create a level.

-You can always suggest other rules or if you disagree, let me know.

I don't really like the idea that much anymore, so I'd like to be removed from the list.

Sorry.

Sacrush
Dec 6, 2006, 09:45 AM
Done, not really a problem.

Olsen
Dec 6, 2006, 10:05 AM
I'd like to participate, if possible.

Sacrush
Dec 6, 2006, 10:08 AM
Sure, added to the list.

Olsen
Dec 6, 2006, 10:10 AM
A question, I see you are second on the list, or the one who should make a level now, correct?

Sacrush
Dec 6, 2006, 10:19 AM
No, the list order isn't baised on who creates the level. The rules nicely points out that the last creator of the level can choose the next creator. So we have to wait till DoubleGJ chooses somebody. If he can't find somebody everybody can volunteer to make the next level.

Olsen
Dec 6, 2006, 10:24 AM
Oh, sorry, I must've missed that part.

ThunderPX
Dec 6, 2006, 10:31 AM
I'm confirmed. I'd also like to do the last super-hard-uberlevel if possible.

Sacrush
Dec 6, 2006, 10:35 AM
added to the list.

n00b
Dec 6, 2006, 10:42 AM
I'm still interested in doing this, but I'm not up for doing any of the next few levels due to more time being devoted to upcoming exams.

Sacrush
Dec 6, 2006, 10:51 AM
Alright, you are [confirmed].

Birdie
Dec 6, 2006, 11:07 AM
Confirm me, I think I want to be third to make a level though.

I'm finally back on JCF. Count me in, yes.

Sacrush
Dec 6, 2006, 12:52 PM
Alright, list updated. Also I'm sorry for taken over this project Dx, I just wanted to get this active again. You can always help me with running this project though.

KRSplat
Dec 6, 2006, 02:21 PM
I don't have time for it, so I'm out. Probably a good thing for the episode anyway.

My fault.

DoubleGJ
Dec 7, 2006, 05:20 AM
No idea who to choose, especially with people leaving the project or postponing to latter levels. I need to see who's _really_ interested.

Sacrush
Dec 7, 2006, 05:24 AM
If ayone want to create the next level please say so, that will make it easier for DoubleGJ to choose someone. If DoubleGJ agree's that he doesn't mind who does the next level anyone can volunteer.

Olsen
Dec 7, 2006, 06:25 AM
Well, I am currently busy with a few levels, but they're on the other computer which I'm not able to access for some days, so I'm really interested, atleast atm.

Sacrush
Dec 7, 2006, 06:27 AM
That's great, if DoubleGJ doesn't mind you may start your level when you want.

PS: don't forget to play the first level before starting.

DoubleGJ
Dec 7, 2006, 06:45 AM
I'm positive, Olsen is a good choice.

Olsen
Dec 7, 2006, 06:52 AM
Alrighty, I'll get going. :)

Sacrush
Dec 7, 2006, 07:30 AM
Yes, finally some progress. And please keep us posted Olsen.

Olsen
Dec 7, 2006, 08:41 AM
Sure thing.

Edit: Here's a screen, eyecandy/placement isn't done in the screenshot but it will probably give you an idea of how it will look.

Meh, I don't like the sudden jump to a well lit area after a dark level.

Olsen
Dec 7, 2006, 11:00 AM
Well, what I thought, was that after leaving the Reactor Area you go into the outer areas of the base, or whatever it is, thus allowing more light.

Anyway, I darkened the level a bit.
http://xs110.xs.to/xs110/06494/ceprojectscreen2.PNG

edit: this is a rushed screenshot, it's not what it looks like atm ;p

General Hare
Dec 7, 2006, 11:54 AM
I am interested to participate in this project, after all I am a fan of single player levels ( if it is). but how would i transfer and receive files and what kind of theme is it based on?
My best abilities is making casino/carnival, tech, air fleet or space themes. I can't make auto-controled ships like in the single player 'rebirth of evil' however.

But anyway, can i join?

Ðx
Dec 7, 2006, 11:57 AM
This can be very fun/intresting. You can just flip over the whole storyline.

n00b
Dec 7, 2006, 12:36 PM
Of course, by doing so you'll make most participants angry since we wasted alot of time coming up with a basic storyline to begin with.

Olsen
Dec 7, 2006, 12:36 PM
Mhm, indeed. But I'm going to try to stick to the storyline and the way it's going.

Sacrush
Dec 7, 2006, 12:36 PM
You can join, anyone can. To get a general idea I suggest you to download the first level which is already complete. I also suggest reading the rules to know how all of this works.

Looks alright Olsen, and I'm almost certain it will be a great level.

Edit: As the rules are saying you have to keep the same storyline, that doesn't mean you can't introduce new things in the storyline though.

Ðx
Dec 7, 2006, 12:59 PM
I will keep the storyline very straight. But you never know what kind of twists could happen ;).

When can I make my level? 4th? 5th?

Sacrush
Dec 7, 2006, 01:21 PM
I think you can make one of those, better wait till we get there though.

Ðx
Dec 7, 2006, 09:26 PM
You can choose.

Olsen
Dec 7, 2006, 09:51 PM
Mind if I spoil my current level's continuing of the story?

You are escaping the masses of guards coming to eliminate you, so you try to run to the warps so you can get out of there. But someone Orbitz/ThaSpaz/UF uses the warp to megawarp you somewhere...

After that it's the next's turn, but I haven't choosen anyone yet. ;)

superjwren329
Dec 8, 2006, 12:35 AM
Count me in. I'm just bad at making tilesets. Stories and making levels are my expertise.

I can do three, four? I mean, the holidays just started. Six whole weeks.

NovaStar
Dec 8, 2006, 01:58 AM
Same.

Sacrush
Dec 8, 2006, 02:00 AM
The planning is that everyone makes one level. That might change though.

Too Olsen: Sounds very nice. It will give the next creator (Birdie?) much freedom.

Ðx
Dec 8, 2006, 02:59 AM
If Birdie does't has time or something else, can I make the next level?

Sacrush
Dec 8, 2006, 03:15 AM
Well, Birdie did told me that he wanted to do the third level. If he doesn't want to anymore and Olsen would't mind you doing the next level, you can.

I am the exact opposite of you. I'm much better at making Tilesets/Conversions than I am at making levels.

Violet CLM
Dec 8, 2006, 10:45 AM
...in which case, I do not want to see your levels.

Anyway, no free time until January, and afterwards, I have my own projects to work on. Count me as a probable negative (who does not recall ever signing up in the first place).

Sacrush
Dec 8, 2006, 12:10 PM
Ill just delete you from the list, if you want to be a part of this, I will put you back on it.

superjwren329
Dec 8, 2006, 11:30 PM
Heh. If were still trying to escape, or at the final part of it, it would have to have really rockin' music. Warping out of the space-station or whatever, seeing it implode in a ball of flame or whatever...

I just want to know how I'm going to put my level(s) here and what tilesets I should use. I've got the idea for what some of the levels should look like...

Sacrush
Dec 9, 2006, 12:32 AM
You have to wait till it's your turn. Then you can decide which tileset it haves to use and how the story continues.

superjwren329
Dec 9, 2006, 01:12 AM
I know, I was just asking what tileset you recommend I should use.

Xobim
Dec 9, 2006, 01:21 AM
Well, I'm interested in this concept since the beginning. But I fear that school is going to take all my free time away. If you need someone to make big bases or something similar, I might come in handy. (allthough I'd like to use a different tileset than Top3)

Sacrush
Dec 9, 2006, 01:27 AM
The tileset choice is something you can decide, but it has to be something which connect to the level before. Ill just add you to the list, if your out, just say so.

Maybe it is best that I'll go when Olsen is done. Winter holidays are within three weeks, which is hopefully enough time for me to create a map.
I just need to find a tileset that looks a lot like Top3, but is different...

Birdie
Dec 9, 2006, 07:38 AM
I'm pretty sure that I'm going third. (which is after olsen)

Xobim
Dec 9, 2006, 07:59 AM
OK, #4 should suit me fine if possible, I hope...

Olsen
Dec 9, 2006, 09:02 AM
Edit: Okay, the gameplay's pretty much finished, now all I need is testers and finishing eyecandy..
edit2: if someone wants to do the eyecandy, no problem for me, just contact me. (That's not against the rules, is it?)
it's just because I have alot to do atm

Sacrush
Dec 9, 2006, 12:52 PM
Alright, I just tested the level and I think it's pretty good, but after the first warp you can't see anything anymore(it stayed white at me) but I could still finish the level since that's pretty much the end.

My MSN crashed so that's why I went offline, sorry Olsen.

Edit: I would not mind if somebody else did the eye candy but you have to find someone who is willing too.

It works without the music. So, open it in JCS, take out the music, and play.

Puffie40
Dec 10, 2006, 10:03 AM
I also notice that the first level will play perfectly (With music) if you use 1.24. I just found that out last night when I brought the level over to my ol' 300. (Which has both 1.23 and 1.24)

General Hare

Dec 10, 2006, 12:25 PM
Birdie if you want I can send you my level and you can start on your level already, so we can speed the progress up a bit.

Birdie
Dec 10, 2006, 02:27 PM
Sure.

Sacrush
Dec 10, 2006, 10:33 PM
I might forget to tell you but you should already know that the first levels are 1.23 and I would like to keep it that way. People who only have 1.24 can still join but may only use 1.23 compatible tilesets and events so I can edit the level and let it work in 1.23

DoubleGJ
Dec 10, 2006, 11:02 PM
I'll just repeat once more that even after j2b-ising the music file for first level is still too large to handle for 1.23, especially since the level itself uses a lot of memory-choking effects like ambient sounds almost everywhere and many animations. You can simply mute music in your Jazz2 before playing, this way the music file won't be loaded. Of course the downside is that you'll lose a lot of clima without the music, but if that's the only way, there is no choice. Or simply, get TSF because technically it's just better than 1.23 in all ways.

JanusJackrabbit
Dec 10, 2006, 11:02 PM
I don't understand what the trouble is with getting a copy of TSF. I have 1.20 and 1.24 and I can say the sound quality is considerably better. It crackles less for me, at least. Of course, you're free to do as you like. I'm busy working on the first level of a pack I'll probably never finish.

If you ask me, it would be cool to take this pack and make it into a mish-mosh of "let me tell the tale of Jazz Jackrabbit when he.." and allow each person to tell a story of Jazz in a different theme/plot (maybe movie themes like James Bond, or Back to the Future; the level I'm working on is Indiana Jones based if anyone is wondering).

cooba

Alternatively, the original .it file could be downsampled a little bit and then recompressed.

Puffie40
Dec 11, 2006, 07:54 AM
Sacrush, I'm having second thoughts about my participation. I'm not a fast level creator, I have only moderate skills in working with JCS, and I don't think I can create a level of the quality (Or plot) others are currently working at. So, I would like to withdraw.

That was done with a few on-off sessions. I would work on it when inspiration hit (Much like my other projects  ). I try to keep focused on one project at a time, and I don't want to hold this episode back.

If I feel I have enough time to do a level for the episode, I'll rejoin.

Thanks for understanding. I'll be eagerly waiting for the next level!

You guys make it much to.. tied.

Why not dump all process, like an true open source, and everybody is just allowed to improve. That will keep it very active because people will debat what the like and what not.

Perhaps that just keep us OF the leveleditor, and just talk about it.. but it would be great if somebody just made levels. I just like to tweak stuff.

n00b
Dec 11, 2006, 06:41 PM
Marijn you could accept to betatest if you want to do that.
We'd get nowhere if we kept debating over a level. This isn't "Let's fight over how to make a level with a bunch of backseat driving" this is "Let's make a community episode, get it done, and have a (-) good time doing it"

This is irritating. Everybody can now volunteer at the moment. I can send some of the peoples the second level which I'm sure Olsen won't mind, but you have to remember that the level isn't comepletely finished. So who's up for the challange?

Why making such a big problem ^^. Go ahead n00b and Marijn make the level.

n00b
Jan 12, 2007, 02:41 PM
Because we have to wait for you to finish a level and all of a sudden you go "Um, I can't do it anymore", and then we lose the time we had to wait for you and we don't have any of the level to work off of.

The major problem is this is how pretty much the production of most of the levels for this thing is going.

Ok hate to trigger another Zapper attack, but Jazz Jackrabbit 2's genre IS platformer. Also, shoot-em-ups in the sense of Metal Slug do not translate well into a JJ2 made level.

I agree that before it's going to be released things should be polished. Not only spelling but maybe also other things. But yeah, we still got a lot of work to do first.

WerBack3>> is added to the list.

Edit: Maybe we should only make the levels available for people who is going to work on the episode and some betatesters. Just so that when it's finished the whole community didn't already played it. What do you people think?

Yep. I've got the rooms fully outlined (walls, floors, ceilings), and have about 3 more rooms to fill before it's done. The level is non-linear, with no checkpoints. (Because you need to smash ALL crates to escape.) Screenshot may come soon. I'll also have to show the other room I finished...

I just thought of something- if the quality of a level is deemed too low by a lot of people on the list, it should be forcibly replaced by a better one.

Xobim
May 30, 2007, 05:33 AM
In that case the level needs to be betatested by a lot of peeps, which might cause information leakage. I'm not sure if we're after that...

ShadeJackrabbit

From what I've seen so far, quality isn't a problem, but it may become one. I'd say that it shouldn't be forcibly removed, but maybe edited.

Jun 21, 2007, 09:33 AM
I love and hate level 4 plot-wise:
I love it because it's the only level that feels like it belongs right after the level that preceded it.
I hate it because the plot has degenerated from "You've awaken in a mysterious base, and learn of two people scheming. One is uneasy, and things are obviously going wrong" to "LET'S HUNT DOWN CHIPS IN SPAAAAAAAAAACE"

ShadeJackrabbit
Jun 21, 2007, 10:10 AM

You are lost Your shuttle crashes in harsh environment

Etc...

If it weren't for the loss of chips, none of the above would situations would have a point! :p

Woo. Hey there. Yeah, I suppose it was finished. I wasn't really happy with it, but I didn't have the guts to continue working on it. Or something. So... if someone wants to edit it, feel free.

I want to get back into level design. What's the first level that I can start work on, and what theme would it be in?

Well?

I was on Vacation for two weeks and couldn't work on it.

And Sacrush, can I have level 2 as well?
I can't bear to wait the 2 years Olsen is taking to
"touch up"
the eyecandy or whatever else.

There was more than a month between those posts. Stop being so rude all the time; I've noticed it before, especially in this thread.

EDIT: I have time to do a level as well, but since everything seems a little chaotic right now I'll wait until everything's sorted out. If someone would send me the levels that have been made so far, I might be able to do something about the "atmosphere" issue n00b was talking about.

Gerard your level was by far the weakest in the episode so far, it's best if you lay off the trash talking.

Not really the worst, I'd say it was definately too short. The level I liked the least was Zapper's - not only it looks bad and rushed, but also lacks testing. AFAIK, there's no way for Jazz (not even mentioning Lori) to get out of the bottom area without cheating. He can't get to the exit area from the right side too, so the whole unlinearity of this level seems more of level design lazyness than anything. Lastly, it breaks the local canon of calling the player just "You" and instead uses "Jazz" which I won't even bother to prove badly chosen (also it should be noted that even level 4 uses the classic "You"). I did, however, like level 2 a lot - even though it has quite a lot of elements ripped off EvilMike's Deserto Orbital Base, it's at least a good source to borrow from and works just fine. The level design is also enjoyable and deals a good pack of entertainment with many basic tricks (bypassing closed gates with unobvious means is a good example). I think that this project goes in a good direction, just goes a bit slow and the story has become somewhat awkward (why the hell we need those chips anyway, we're now working for the bad guys or what?)

Meh, I guess it's just because I despise levels that force you to go back and forth between an area thats nothing but hurt events.

Oh yeah, that one really sucks. Wouldn't be so bad if there was a way to not get hurt when passing this part, though.

Hah. You know... I'm not working on it, and I think I said that.

You know, 2xGJ, I think you just made me want to finish my level... :)

Thanks for your timely response, guys! You have definitely proven that you exhibit superior managerial skills and ability to work together!

And thank you for reading my first post properly!:-)

Anyway, n00b is busy with his level. You might be able to make one after him. But n00b decides that.
