Review Exchange

I've created this thread in the spirit of encouraging people to write reviews on j2o. The way this thread works is as follows.

1. You post a link to an upload which you want people to review.
2. Someone quotes your post, and agrees to write a review. In their reply they also provide a link to an upload they want reviewed.
3. You quote their post as a confirmation. Both of you proceed to review each others uploads.

You don't have to follow these guidelines EXACTLY, but the way I have outlined them is a good example of how to use this thread. The point is for people to use this thread as a means to agree to trade reviews: "I'll review your level if you review mine." This is something that has been practiced for a very long time. This thread is just a way to facilitate that by providing a neat and organized place for that sort of discussion.


Now for a few rules.

People who fail to reciprocate (as in, they come to an agreement in this thread, receive a review, and yet do not write a review back) will be added to a "list of shame" which will be edited into this post for everyone to see. People on this list will not be allowed to participate in this thread. You can remove yourself from the list if you finally decide to write your review. Repeat offenders may receive more severe punishment.

Stay on topic. This thread is for exchanging reviews, and posts which deviate from that will probably be deleted. In other words, don't post here if you aren't directly participating.

No drama in this thread. If someone hasn't written you a review, send me a private message and I'll add their name to the list. Don't use this thread for calling people out and starting petty arguements.

And one final recommendation: if you want to grab attention, don't just post a link to your upload. Post a screenshot too, and maybe a general description. You don't have to do this, but it's a lot more interesting.

Or if your review was very detailed and you don't want to get the feeling you wrote it in vain, just remove the rating until this person reviews back.

Yes thank you for your review. I'd like to make a few comments though about your review. In order to play the level correctly you should host it in MP preferably treasure mode where all the triggers work and actually add new challenges after finishing laps like wooden bridges that disappear. Also I've made more then 3 levels, my old account is Satan.

Anyway, will review your tileset soon.

Heh, come to think of it, my latest upload (Lost Luggage Landfill) which is a race could use reviews... They have ratings but most of all I want feedback, but that's only if you want to do so, and don't worry about it being extra long or anything, or you don't really have to do it because it's the Race gametype which you might not be a fan of... I'd reccomend playing it online before rating if you do want to anyway, or at least with me, (hee hee, I abuse all the shortcuts). =S =P

Psych is fine, tho you may want to play on easy since it plays like a really hard platformer (easy gives you a do-over if you slip and fall into a pit). I did briefly check out your battle level, and I liked the innovation in the eyecandy. Looks cool :)

To try to address your confusions, the odd-looking event list is because I had the Multiplayer checkbox in Level Properties checked just for fun, which has the effect of removing certain events and event categories from the event list, intended to correspond to those events which actually don't work in multiplayer. Unfortunately, there is not a one-to-one correspondence; the pinball events in particular do work in multiplayer, but their category is not visible when the box is checked. Fortunately, there's not really any good reason ever to check the box, so this doesn't interact poorly with anything.

As for the DON'T USE events, they're parts of "MCEs," which are a complicated subject <a href="http://www.jazz2online.com/jcsref/node.php?node=84&mode=id">I've previously explained at great length</a>... the short version is that when you place some generating object x, you're actually placing an invisible object called "Generator" and telling IT to generate x, based on its parameters. The idea with MCEs is that you can take a Generator object and move it to another tile (using Belt Left or Belt Right), at which point it will generate a different object y based on the parameters of that other tile that it moves to. JJ2, when loading a level, looks through it for instances of enemy events or generator events with enemy-generating parameters and removes those events entirely, but if you have the generator event and the enemy-generating parameters on two separate tiles, then JJ2 will be fooled and will let you generate enemies even in multiplayer.

Also that reminds me I was going to reply to something about your review: Any method to beat Bolly is great as long as it's fun, though I did add in the belts specifically in response to making it harder to stomp him from above. Hopefully it wasn't still too easy. And also thank you for pointing out how non-obvious it was that the blue blocks were destructible. I was intending that to be more apparent, but, well there used to be more instances of colored blocks like the blue ones in which they were scenery event tiles, but by the final version I'd removed all of them except the blue ones. Had the other ones still been there, their properties might have been more apparent but I guess I just kind of forgot how obscure it would probably be to an outside perspective. :) Good to know.

Years ago I started making a few JJ2 levels, working on them only very infrequently. After all this time they have finally been finished though! I always found the official JJ2 levels did not pose enough of a challenge, so the levels I made are far more difficult. They are not cramped with enemies or bosses, but tactically positioning them just makes life harder. If any of you like to try:

I do not ask for a review but I do wonder if anyone will be able to finish these levels. If you can, you should be very proud of yourself!

I should give a warning beforehand about the last level (9). Personally I never finished the last level in this series because it is extremely tough and can from time to time be buggy. Just consider level 9 a bonus.
Also, in some levels there is a "puzzle". Especially the one in level 7 will take some thinking to figure out. Possibly the best way to do it is to draw it out on paper and take some time off the computer. If any of them is really too much I'd like to know.

Then one last point: There is no overflow of ammo, coins, or other goodies. Almost all coins are required to finish the levels, they are often not for bonuses. Also, saving special bullets for later might help you, so I recommend using normal ones as often as possible.

Good luck to any who feels like giving it a try. These will probably be the hardest levels you've played so don't get upset! Cherish every life you have, although theoretically you need not get hit by anything.

And no reviews.

If you don't review it, the next episode will probably make it even easier to die.

Most levels that come out still aren't scripted, or use very simple ones. If the non-scripted entries are high quality too, they'll probably used in some later ODT.

Highly scripted levels give good first impressions because of the novelty factor, but once you play them for a while, players get a better idea of how good the level actually is. It doesn't automatically make a level better.

Again, angelscript DOESN'T suck. It just sometimes happens that people's levels that use angelscript get in the way of JCSing of people who don't know programming at all.
Okay this is the review thread. I don't wanna act like a mod but we're going waaay too off topic :p.

In 2014 I started my JCS adventure, and since then I have produced four levels, three of which are tests, one of which could be called an 'art level'. The Cathedral of St. Borgius, a never-ending Work in Progress, was the first to spawn from my creative essence. It is not really a level I 'need' a review for, because it's always being edited and has no, shall we say, gameplay use other than being pretty and a place to walk around in and discover. That's why it can be found in Puke Nukem Relaxer, among other levels of a similar nature, such as Hotels.

However, my tests (see links below) are a different category. Two of them are on the Puke Nukem Test server (Haunted and Acrid), yet only one of my tests has received a review (thanks, Jelly :D). The first test, quite small, easy and with a few tilebugs, was merely a means to...experiment in the art of testmaking. Yet still I'm curious as to what people think of it. The second test, Acrid, is a much larger and much more elaborate project. Not only do I want my tests to be 'challenging', there also has to be something to look at. The overall environment, so to speak. I did not yet discover how to make animated tiles, that's why the propellor blades etc are stationary. Still, what are the community's thoughts on this level? Any hints, tips and tricks for future projects?

My most recent test, the Desolate one, is also unreviewed as of now. Here, I finally made use of animated tiles, but since there were no propellor blades like in other versions of the Desolation tileset, I could only use them in the lights, texts and fire. Still, now I know how to do it, so you can expect to see more in the levels to come (provided of course that the tilesets I want to use contain elements that can be animated). I'd be very happy if people would share their thoughts on this test as well, and give it a (good) rating :).

I know that tests aren't among the most popular gamemodes and levels, but please give it a try.
