View Full Version : My Resignation

Nimrod

I will try not to bore any of you with the standard “Im leaving blah blah blah” and return the next day which many people have done in the past. I am not as such leaving forever, but due to reasons I will be unavailable in the community for the next few years.

Many of you know me, for many different reasons though most people tend to know me as being one of the List Server Admins and the owner of the jazz.nimrod-online.com list server which is currently being used by the community.

Well starting this September I am doing something that I have put off for the last two years, and that’s finished my education with the last big step, University. On September the 15th to be exact, I am leaving home, moving to the other side of England to go to Huddersfield University. Though that probably means nothing to most of you not living in England, but it’s a fair distance from home. I am going to study a degree in “Computer and Network Administration” and also get Cisco Certified. Many of you know my love for networking, and this really is the ideal qualification for me and should lead to the Networking field I hope to work in for the rest of my life.

Now moving into University Halls with very restrictive internet means basically I will be unable to host a List Server at University and being 200 miles away from Home also makes it difficult to continue to host a reliable list server. Therefore coming up to September I will arranging with Monolith how to continue offering a list server service to all community members. This will most likely result in Monolith using my domain name (and list.jazzjackrabbit.com) with his List Server effectively making him the sole List Server usable by the community. Though this will be a mostly silent behind the scenes transition as the domains will just forward meaning no patching will be required on clients or anything complicated like that.

That also means all problems and comments will need to be sent to Monolith. I know the job of list server admin is nothing like it use to be thanks to some amazing tools from the community which protects clients making list banning a thing of the past. (BlurredD, Monolith, Neobeo and Grytolle did a fantastic job at making protection available to clients – many thanks to them from the entire community).

It should be known to everyone, that for months (possibly a year?) the entire ban list has been emptied on both list servers and all the drama which unfolded in the past with crashing has from what I have seen become a thing of the past.

I know many of you felt anger towards me for what happened years ago, but believe me when I say what I personally did, and got the whole team to do with banning I honestly believed was the right thing to do. Maybe I came across heavy handed or even arrogant and if I did, I apologise but at the time we had a major problem with a small few ruining the whole online experience for everyone. As proof of how I felt, as soon as the protection became available and workable for clients, the list server team immediately stopped the process of banning users and instead educated users on how to protect themselves.

Last week I was bored at one point, and ended up searching for myself on the JCF and read all the threads around stuff like the Orbitz situation, and in a way I end up reading my comments and thinking in my head, was that really me? I think we can all hopefully put the past behind us and just notice what a place Jazz Jackrabbit 2 has become online. Many times now when I look at the Games in Progress, I see past 10 games all packed with players. It’s great to think that we as a community have kept a game which is long past its use by date (lol) is still in heavy use.

Also as a community member I would just like to thank everyone over the years, the community has been great. It may be based on just a “Bunny Game for PC” but I feel looking back over the years, it made a part of me. If it wasn’t for things like the list server and client protection, I would probably never got into Networking like I did which means I might be at this point not going to University, or studying something completed different!

Also it should be noted that I know someone who I am going to University with guess what? I wouldn’t have met if it wasn’t for JJ2. Matt (Xtreem back in the days) who I have worked on Digiex with for the past 4-5 years I met years ago in Carrot Clan on JJ2. Now we both run Digiex and play Xbox 360 together and in September, going to be going together to the same University on the same course. So in a way, A lot of where I am is all done to this one small community.

One last thing, special thanks:

Frank Quist – For helping me with morals over the years
Labratkid – For all the UT2003/4 games we had
Monolith – Years of working together on the List Server and the knowledge you shared
Tom(Craccoboy) – For all the drama, but also guidance you gave me with real life problems
Shadow(GPW) – For being a good friend
Snow – Keeping me from dying of boredom on the European Shifts at #jj2
Dalspots – For designing the most amazing flufflator
Blurred, Grytolle and Neobeo (and Monolith again) – Making my job that much easier by solving security issues with JJ2
Odin – The one I always saw eye to eye with for some reason, and for all the backup on JCF over the years lol
All of you – For making the JJ2 Community go on for years.
Those of you I havent got on with - Honestly no hard feelings, and I still wish the best of luck for you with whatever you decide to do.
Apologies to anyone I haven’t mentioned.

I wish the best for all of you with what you choose to do with your life, the very best luck and when you put your mind to it, you can do it. I look forward to seeing you lot in the Anniversity Bash next year! :) (Which hey, I won’t be hosting for once hehe :))

Yeah, good luck in life too :-)
And I'm sure you'll hang around as you're able to use internet from time to time in University too. =P

I know Nimrod mentioned that he will be leaving soon when I was chatting with him on Instant Messaging. But I'm shocked to no end that he actually went through of it.

I feel really bad for his leaving. I've been active in this game for who knows how many years. And well...the one who's guided us throughout the life of this community is now gone. Nimrod I can't believe you went through with this I will miss you so much despite all the arguments we've had and the fact that we've hardly been able to get along. I never wanted to get on your bad side and it wasn't just because you were the list server admin and you had powers it was because there was something more to it than just that and i'm not sure what it is but there's a weird bond in this community.

I read the post above but I don't want to believe it. I just know you'll be back someday maybe in two years or so but I know you'll be back. Hopefully this community stays alive. It depends on how many people you've just convinced to kill themselves since your absence. Miss you more than you think I will!

*squishes Nimmy in a fluffle*

Good luck to you, man. You always seemed like a nice person to me. And your work on the listservers has done a lot to keep this game going in the past few years, which has meant quite something in terms of fun for active players, and sentimental value for others of us ;)

You go show 'em at university. And don't forget to write so we'll know you're still alive ;)

Cheers!

I searched back a while ago, some of my posts then were really ridiculous. So I have to apologise for all of the weird bothering and fustration I gave you back on the PE issue, it really was rather stupid and immature of me. Good luck for uni!

Bye nimmy and good luck with whatever will follow. See you back soon! :) (I hope ;p) And let's be thankful...

Thank you for serving the major part of my desktop wallpaper ;) You're the only one who ever said me that you know how to get JJ2 to work on ICS, <!-- let's just forget you never told me how ;/ --> too =) Thank you for that as it's saving me a lot of money because I refuse to buy a router for JJ2 if it's <!-- somehow -->possible to play without ;) And of course thank you for my ban <!-- which somehow triggered Jam to start demolishing RR, not your fault of course --> which made me show how important it is what you've been doing: thank you for hosting the lists, and for all the other stuff around that ofcourse ;)

Nimrod- Your "Retirement" as listserver admin is a honorable one. I do remember those days before NeoAC came onto the scene, and I can agree "Chaos" best describes it. It must have been a hard job then.

Probably the best achivement I can't thank you enough for is the installation of the mirror leading from the origional JJ2 listserver. that is a major component in expanding the life of the game.

While your job as server admin is important, your life is important too. I wish you the best of luck in your courses, and your career after.

Remember to drop by somtime :)

Monolith - Keep tHat ComPuter going! We CAN't LOSE YOU!! :p :p :p

Good luck with Uni and good to hear that you're heading into a field of work that you love doing. Thanks for all the contributions you've made to the game and the community as well as keeping up the listservers which I've had great times playing on back in the day :).

Good luck at uni! Oh wait I’m in every lesson with you ;)
I never thought I would end up at Uni with someone I met in JJ2, it’s weird how life turns out!
We need to have a game of JJ2 sometime so you can prove your good enough to have that extra carrot from Splash! :P
