Karrot Shire is an open world game based on Jazz Jackrabbit 2. In essentials, it is simply a large Jazz2 level with an add-on program. However, the scope of Karrot Shire is quite enormous, which is why we like to call it a 'game' instead of merely a 'level'.
In a way, Karrot Shire is like a 'hotel' or 'sandbox', because coins are still scattered everywhere and you can still buy houses and furniture if you wish it. However, this is not 'the point' of the game: you’ll have nearly 50 quests to complete in a GTA-style fashion.
Random Features
Very dynamic game world
Quests/Missions
Inventory
Secrets tracking
Saved games entirely managed by the Utility (offline)
The story
There you are, sitting inside a plane, on your way to your holiday destination. And then suddenly, your destination is changed. Your plane crashes on an island that belongs to a district on Carrotus called Karrot Shire. This is a place where many opportunities await you, but also many challenges. Life will not be easy, for a gang calling itself the 'Dark Hand' is gaining in strength and plotting the downfall of everything you see around you. Soon, you will find out that the plane was brought down for a reason…
Status
We have a completely revamped, though still unfinished version that works quite well. We will be making that available on J2O when we're satisfied with it. In the mean time, you can beta test KS if you want to (also see the post (http://www.jazz2online.com/jcf/showthread.php?p=448653#post448653) later in this thread).
PS.
So, no more online accounts. The data will still be accessible if you wish to import it to the new version.

Quite revolutionary, I think. And it reminds me of my two other not-so-sophisticated projects I've been working on, but have cancelled for a while.
This sure will beat the crap out of Second Life.
One more thing, is this beta-test thingy at 11 AM or 11 PM?

I never was too keen on RPG or especially MORPG, but this one doesn't look like a mass-productioned hotel, and I might be even trying it out.
At least if Snooze decides to leave MS for this, I'll play it longer.

Both work on Wine, JJ2 and the utility. That is, on Linux Ubuntu.
Anyway, as far as I know, if this runs on itself without server supervision, why can't you run a dedicated server? Just leave it on. :O

Of course, cheating can only be detected up to a certain point. But if you do it and you're caught (and that chance will hopefully be pretty substantial), there will of course be consequences.
And yes, we do have plans to set up a dedicated server. It would be great just to leave it running 24/7! We're not that far yet at this point, though.

All your items, quest-progress etc is being tracked in the database.
And if people had misunderstandings about it :
You sign up on Karrot.here.ws with an username you like. Handy to use something that looks like what you allways use ingame.
Ingame, you just use whatever you type at the character-change screen.
And the music in the trailer is called I.C.T.O.A.N .
I hope I helped with that :)

A bot? This one caught my attention, tell us more please. Would it be possible to program one for jj2-multiplayer in general too?
Well, the bot would be programmed specifically for a small arena in the level. Inside that area it would be aware of its surroundings and its opponent. Making a bot that can cope with all environments would require much more flexibility and coding. Perhaps, one day, when we get the jj2 source code...

Karrot Shire is all about getting the most out of JJ2. Carrotpie and I are trying to build this system on top of JJ2 and hereby overcoming some of Jazz2's shortcomings. The utility is used to add extra functions to the game, so yes, in a way we are modifying the game heavily =)
Have you yet noticed the utility's auto-update system? It's going to be very handy to be able to have the utility update automatically, for example if there is a serious bug to be fixed.

I'm using Vista aswell, and at first it didn't work... What does the error say? If it is complaining about the DLL file, go to karrot.here.ws , and at downloads, pick the DLL download. Put it in the directory the site says ( I can't remember which one ;-) )
Otherwise, please tell me what the error is about.
For the people who are interested in what the storyline goes about... Here is the introduction!
Storyline
A great day for the inhabitants of Carotus: The holiday season has started! Ordering tickets as fast as you can at Karrot Tours, you decide to go to a nice place called Karrot Shire.
The flight captain is as happy as allways. “Hey everyone, around now you should be able to see our destination!â€
But as the plane draws closer to Karrot Shire, something seems to be wrong.
“I’m not getting any signal from the airport!†says the captain to the second captain. “Just try again.â€
Suddenly, the plane starts to act strange, tilt and bump everywhere. “What happened?? All engines fell out at once!!†“Try the extra engines, quick!â€
Pushing and pulling all buttons the captains could, but the plane did do nothing but fall down out of the sky.
“Ladies and gentleman, fasten your seatbelts!!â€
Then all went quiet…
You looked around you. The plane was crashed, everywhere fire. Luckily enough, it seemed that no one got hurt! Leaving the crashsite, the inhabitants of Karrot Shire are kind enough to help you out, and slowly you discover that the crash has everything to do with a group of rabbits that want nothing but bad things…
I'm trying to get the storyline as good as it can be. I'm hoping that it will feature atleast 25 quests. And if you think thats not enough, there are allways side-quests to do!

GMT 0 (England): 10 AM

GMT -5 (Eastern Standard Time): 5 AM
GMT -6 (Central Time): 4 AM

The people in the US have nothing to worry, as I'll host Karrot Shire the whole day. I might have to go in the evening, where Falcury will (hopefully) pick up the server and host further. And like I said in my last post, we got two servers when things get crowded, and I'll just let the server stay on if there are too many people on the time I need to go.

I think it will. AB's are not really popular anymore afaict. Have seen many empty servers last AB.
Will there be special Winter, Spring and Autumn styles in the future?
And will ye make a video of the first, say, half an hour of KS?
WadlCury
Dec 9, 2007, 01:19 PM
Its funny that you ask that... I'd allready thought about that, I would certainly like to have something seasonal in KS... Like in winter time there would be snow piles everywhere etc... But for some idea's, we need to modify the tileset (again).
Also the video was in my planning. But I really have NO idea how I would make the grande opening a cool thing. Anyone suggestions?
Like something that I create a special building for the opening, around 10 minutes after the opening of the server we'll have a party in there, with "coin-rain" and other small games, and a countdown clock or something (trigger)... Does that sound fun?
Furthermore, Falcury and I are really flattered and thank you all for all those great comments and compliments till now. It certainly makes us feel good =) And it does give me inspiration and energy to try and make everything as close to perfect as possible ;-)
Carrotpie
Question!! Please read this and say what you think about it!
Okay, lets say that there would show up 30 people in the server (filling it completely) and the lag would get SO bad, that the server even crashes before the grande opening! xD (LOL)
How about that we run different servers, allowing up to ... 15-20 people or so... I'm sure the lag would be alot less then, but it COULD make it less fun because : your friends cant join the same server cause its full , its completely deserted in your server, those kind of things...
What do YOU think that is best for Karrot Shire, but most important : what's best for YOU ?

Kind of hard to do without a password I'd say :)
I recently regained access, thanks to the fact that the password was still in Firefox' password system. ;) We figured we'd use the old account again.
BTW, now I am having issues with changing the password after resetting it OR logging in after this. After it is changed, not a single password seems to work for me anymore.
And now, to liven things up a little, here's a new tidbit about Karrot Shire.
You may wonder how we cope with only having 16 text strings and 32 triggers. Well, we don't. I'd say we have approximately 100 strings and about 50 triggers in use right now. This is achieved by using a dynamic "district" system for texts and triggers, so when you leave an area (district) in the level and enter another, you get a new set of strings. Memory editing sure is cool :)
(I remember Neobeo's Firetruck doing some similar nifty things as well, but in a different way.)

Report of Karrot Shire, after 142 minutes of playing.
Hey people! Well, it seems that Karrot Shire is running without (alot) problems :)
After I opened the server, allready 15 people showed up in the first minutes.
Alot amazed reactions of the player, some saying that the introduction cutscene was allready great =).
But there where of course some bugs. thanks to the Report system, we allready got alot bug reports. We'll repair them as soon as possible!
Some players where fast enough to finish the available quests in less than one hour. Well, not that hard with just 6 quests... =P
And it seems that someone allready got his/her first house! Gratz with it!
I would like to remind everyone about the fact that there is a guide built in the utility. Click on "Help" and choose "Guide". Same is for bug reports. Please report these things, as it will improve the game (and makes it more fun for you aswell!)
You can also use the report function for game improvements. What would you like to see in Karrot Shire? But don't start talking about level expansion: We allready are over limit of size...
Thanks for all the positive reactions! The server is still online for everyone who still want to see Karrot Shire.

Wow, this is cool, great job :D the first time i joined the server, JJ2 crashed, but now it works and i doubt that was a bug in the level itself. Travelling to the mainland now :)
//E: just noticed on the boat - the carrot shire tool always tell me i had 0 coins while i have 8 or 9, is this intended, or..?
//E2: I just walked to the castle in Torracia and, on arriving there, got the text from the tradesman "there's always soemthing to be shipped...come back later"
//E3: at the bank, the nurse was talking to me.

WadlCury
Dec 16, 2007, 07:08 AM
@Unhit
The utility gives you the amount of coins you have put in the bank, not the amount you're carrying with you. If you had already put coins in the bank, then we have a bug.
And yes, there are still some text bugs to be sorted out...
@IconGuy
You have to put a minimum of 50 coins in the bank, or it won't work.
@Cpp
fmod.dll is for playing music while the utility is running. It can play back songs from your jj2 directory.
There were some crashes while we were hosting (anyone ever heard of "Silent Massacre"?), but it was fun nonetheless. Some hours ago, my server became invisible to most people, due to an unknown reason. Maybe Carrotpie will host some more this evening, I don't know.
Anyway, thanks for all the positive reactions. We're not sitting still and we're fixing bugs, adding quests, adding totally cool new features and making the protections better etc.

Dunno if anyone posted it, but I made a convenient conversion table for JJ2 players to figure out when Karrot Shire starts:
GMT +2 (Israel): 12 AM
GMT +1 (The Netherlands): 11 AM
GMT 0 (England): 10 AM
GMT -4 (Newfoundland): 6 AM
GMT -5 (Eastern Standard Time): 5 AM
GMT -6 (Central Time): 4 AM
GMT -7 (Mountain Time): 3 AM
GMT -8 (Pacific Time): 2 AM
If you live in the US and are planning to join Karrot Shire when it opens, wake up extra early/stay up extra late.
;| Being from Newfoundland, I am completely offended at how you mangled our timezone, Newfoundland Standard Time is GMT -3.5
Shame on you!

Ah ok. I hadn't put money into the bank. But why can you only buy stuff from your bank-money? Is their no possibility for the tool to log when you pick up a coin? Because that would make everything far more handy imo.
Also, have you read about the obviously wrong text messages i "discovered"?
Apart from that, i'm looking forwards to playing it again :) made me drag jj2 back to my desktop =)

Since the Karrot Shire utility has an auto-updater, you should upload that program, and the karrot shire tileset to j2o since technically they wouldn't be in beta stage if they auto-update to fix themselves.
Also you should allow Karrot Shire Utility to download the level/tileset for you and block downloaders when hosting the server. That way no noobs join who have no idea what they're doing. Only people with the utility can join and chat and stuff.

No, since we'll be sleeping by then xD.
The betatest was great, many people have shown up (highest population at a time: 17 people in the server!), there allready have been sold more than 5 houses, and most people had finished all the quests which where available =P
When the server will be online, is currently unknown, but I hope to host around christmas (25 / 26 december for people who have lived in a cave) again. It will buy us some time again to respond to the bug reports which have been send, and we'll try to get some more quests in it ;-)
Also I'd like to put the player names at the sold houses, and maybe decorate Karrot Shire special for the christmas season! I'll tell you later I will host.

If you looked at those quests... It's the only thing you DIDN'T steal from RuneScape... they were short, one-line and boring. More of a tutorial than actual quests. I'm still waiting for, as it were, single-player based levels to complete as a quest. Or, even better, team up with someone and do a quest together, like co-op single-player.
I hope you take this advice in mind, because now, Karrot Shire is a hotel with a map function and automatic banking.
Edit to add: Don't think I'm all negative on this Karrot Shire, though. The idea is common, but good, and the way it was put together using the tool is awesome... but yeah, it's actually just a hotel with an extra tool. Work on it a bit more before releasing a full-time server. Or, even better, host a full-time server and add quests on the run. That way, it'll be new every time you log in.

@CrimiClown
Well, it's not hard to say the quest are not good yet, since there where only 5 quests or so...
And isn't it NORMAL for a storyline that it is one-line?
Short? Check a REAL MMORPG, like World of Warcraft. That game got short quests. And still it can be fun.
Of course I'm thinking of better ways for quests. But I have to think about what Falcury CAN make and what he CAN'T. 2 player quests have allready come into my mind, but if Falcury thinks its a good idea... Well, I really dunno yet.
Note: For the storyline I've allready created another 15 quests.
About releasing additional quests: Exactly my plan. Why should they come out the first day allready? People would get bored after they finished them all, so they could stop playing...
And "Karrot Shire is a hotel with a map function and automatic banking", I feel it as an insult for Karrot Shire. Surely you didn't mean it like that, but Karrot Shire is MUCH more than that.

Well, it may not BE that way, but you also have to consider wether it IS more than a hotel with a map and automatic banking or wether it FEELS more than a hotel with a map and automatic banking. Of course, it's a start, but this should be WAY bigger.

Dec 25, 2007, 12:03 AM
Yes I think we could do that. But for now we should just run the separate programs in the background. I believe Carrotpie had some trouble setting up NeoAC on Vista, so the server would have been unprotected at the time of that crash. Still, listserver crashes are no match for NeoAC...
We have ideas for an awful lot of quests to come. Some things have already been made but it wouldn't be right to release them now.
We will probably be hosting today and/or tomorrow. No new quests as of now but a couple of bug fixes and some new stuff that people asked for, like being able to follow another player on the map and being able to buy items in shops with cash money (instead of coins from the bank).

O well... If everyone misses Karrot Shire THAT much, i'll just host it for you for a while.
The server will be turned ON around 6:15 PM (18:15) GMT+1 (Dutch Time). I'll try to have it turned on as long as possible.
On this host you can try many new things!! There have been added 2 quests (one storyline and one normal quest) and 2 skills. Furthermore have all the bought houses been updated and are provided with a name of its owner.
Cleaning The Chimney
With the last updates, Karrot Shire became even cooler and more fun than it allready was!
As example, there are added 2 new skills!!!
What you need to do to unlock these skills? Oh, not very much... Nope, not very much. You only have to...
Clean the Chimney!
After you have done this quest, be ready to play around with the freshly added "Engineering skill" and the "Smithing skill". You also will be able to get your hands on the "Factory Mini-Game!!!
The "Cleaning the Chimney" Quest can be started at Mr. Smokey, the boss of the factories in Carvan City.

Don't worry!! As we once said "You may have not heard of us for a while, and thats because we where working on a super secret project [..]", and we still are working on it!
As KRSplat guessed, we are still in a beta stage with KS.. We still try to improve things, add more quests and skills, remove bugs, add more and remove more.. We want to have it -almost- perfect.
And these things cost time. But dont think that we've stopped, that would be the last thing we would do with KS.
Currently we are trying to set up a 24/7 KS server, which probably might even be running within a month.
So hold on everyone! You can play Karrot Shire soon enough again. Don't worry.

4AM here, just finished playing. I need to control myself better... And even if I got sucked in, I felt lonely most of the time. Without other players the whole land seems lifeless despite all the NPCs... Maybe you could at least put some butterflies in wildlife areas... Also I wish enemies could somehow work in this. Are you going to try implement some baddie-frying quests? That would be more interesting, I think. Or maybe just make it possible to fight some for money (and maybe experience if you're thinking of adding it among dignity) instead of making it just float around in places? If you're opting for an MMORPG style, this would definately make it more noticeable.

Good points. I think I will try to make a fightable bot next, to make things more interesting on that front. I agree that the inactivity is sad - the best alternative would, I think, us being online all the time so people always have someone to fight or to chat to. The downside, of course, is that Carrotpie and I do have lives, so we simply can't be in the server at all times.
24/7 hosting, or (hopefully a bit more) regular hosting?
Nonomu198

Ah, Brd is lying. Me and that other guy were in the server too, for 2 hours (dunno I left after 2 hours or something).
Anyway, I agree with DoubleGJ, and I also think that the eyecandy in most of the world should be improved. I mean, when you are in civilization (aka cities) there are some nice eyecandy, but on the road there is nothing.... gives me a sad feeling. Realy, add some animations out there.
The downside, of course, is that Carrotpie and I do have lives.
YAH HAVING LIVES IS SILLY
edit:
There is some guy in the server called rf. He is killing everyonw and stuff :(
edit:
Stuff are ok, except I gut stuck in a bank and there is this pplace where you get iced and go up, I get stuck in the wind.
Add some stuff like trade, house selling, more quests (!!!), NICER quests, more eyecandy, enemies (go bots go) and more unique ways to go around will rock.
I GUT A HOUSE YAYYAYYAY (I singed as Nonomu198 if you wonder).

The quests owned. Another island would own (haha im mad). I know I might be sounding annoying, the quests were awesome, but I think you should add more, I'm sure you're up to something... Maybe you can also make monsters and parties and rare items. Still owns anyway. :)

So I just noticed you can trade and sell items when the server is offline.
I've put up my fast-fires for 75 coins, also does anyone want to sell any magic logs or a Toaster PU? I'm trying so hard to get it and still no luck. :(

Pretty nice game concept. It looks nice. To me, I don't think Jazz should be built for mmorpg or online. It's very corny and childish when you play bunnies instead of humans running around in a virtual world. Not a bad idea, go for it.

EDIT: Carrotpie is NOT ok with other people using the tileset. Sorry, the answer will therefore be "no".

Does the amount of tries used for completing quests affect the amount of received dignity or something? If not, then I'm totally confused why do players that have got the same progress have different dignity-rates.

There was a bug that caused some players to get more dignity than others. It has been fixed now.

Does Carrotpie have a reason to keep the tileset to themself? I know he has the right to keep the tileset, but with his descision the community could lose a lot of nice hotel levels. It's not like we'll 'dethrone' KarrotShire, anyways.

[reassuring voice]
Of course it's not dead. It's just that there are a couple of things going on at the moment:
- Exam time!! omg, there goes my valuable time...
- We are looking at the possibility to make KS so that it would be single player with the option of multiplayer. i.e. you can host it yourself if you wish.
- We want to FINISH the storyline. We have some great new quest outlines, only we have to make them, which takes time. You know it would be disappointing if we took the time to host KS and there would be few new quests/features - we want it to be good. In other words, "it will be done when it's done".
Sorry to those hoping to see it back online in the short term. But I will only probably have the time to do some serious work on it in June (and seeing as I am the one who does all the programming, the project will probably not progress much until that time. Hopefully I will be able to persuade Carrotpie to work on the level some more).
So hang in there.
And of course, I will do my best to make the Util JJ2+ compatible. Though I can't see how it would not work anymore in relation to the old version. Oh well, I'd have to test that.
Any input is welcome, of course.

I see no reason that the utility should not work with jj2+.
Falcury
May 8, 2008, 01:11 PM
JJ2+ apparently can display text on the jj2 screen.
If it could draw other stuff as well, I might consider building the entire utility on top of JJ2+. Much better integration & fullscreen!
No. Way too ambitious...
Still, I'd love to take a look at the jj2+ source to see how the text drawing is done.
Birdie
May 8, 2008, 01:41 PM
I do belive jj2+ draws it's text by calling jj2's own text drawing function. And you can draw any other stuff if you really want.

Falcury
Jun 23, 2008, 07:58 AM
Well, the good news is that I've picked up work on it again. Let me unveil a bit for you. Mind you, it's still going to take a long time until we hit version 1.0.
Ingame CTF is about half finished, ingame duels are up next. In these competitive modes, you will be able to win money from your opponents.
When that is done, a high score system is up next (also a competitive element).
More secrets will be added. Finding secrets will give you hints for other secrets.
After that, some 10-20 more quests will be made at least.
And about hosting more often... We find that we do not have the energy to pull it off regularly (typical...). We want to have new stuff every time we host it, and we need to everything up to date! We think our newer model will work better (but we need to work it out first, obviously).

Dec 30, 2008, 06:07 AM
Hey, thanks for reminding us! :P
Yes, I am coding at the moment, though I think Carrotpie is overestimating my work a little. There's a very nasty CTF bug I can't seem to work out (namely, switching in-game to ctf mode causes that none of the players will detect that you possess the flag, except yourself).
The december deadline is a little optimistic as well, because KS is unplayable at the moment. This is because I have been getting a little ambitious, wanting to throw out the whole online account mess. Therefore I am stuck in conversion stuff etc. I am pleased to say, however, that the game is still coming along very nicely. It is starting to look more like a Jazz2 RPG engine than a hard-coded game now. Maybe it'll be just that in the end, who knows.
Some news on the "New Features" front. No Internet connection required anymore (offline save game based). Numerous UI fixes. New Ranking system that will hopefully be very rewarding. Trophies/Achievements. Beside all the other stuff in version 1.0.
I could try to push out a "beta" version for people to play with, when I can manage it. Go easy on us though. I have a medicine study to worry about ;)
