Skip ahead to about 4:18. (Video in general contains some offensive footage, this being Duke Nukem.)

Thoughts? I dunno. It looks... well, it's flashy, there are explosions, but I can't see anything in the way of interesting gameplay. Prey was good, but this looks a lot more ordinary. It has been a while since there's been footage, though, so that's... encouraging?

The shrinking ray.... this is freaking awesome.

Well, it captures the mood of the game well even if it does look a bit like a HL2 mod.

More one liners, less HL2.

Fun fact about Prey: 3drealms wasn't able to finish it even after like 10 years, so they handed it over to another company and they managed to get it done right away

Oh well, we'll eventually see.

IIRC DNF runs on a modified UT2K4. <enough acronyms to send FDR spinning in his grave>

I'm just hoping they hold onto the original Duke 3D experience.

As they say, very modified, but yeah, there's an Unreal engine in there somewhere.

All I can make of the trailer is that DNF is a game in which you kill bulky aliens by applying massive gun power. I don't understand how people can say "prey plus!" or "hl2 mod!" after seeing this video?

Prey and DNF appear to share the same art direction. As for "HL2 Mod", I'm guessing because of the weapon selection.

Prey had portals, gravity-warping stuff, a world that was a living creature, aliens and organic weapons.

DNF has aliens. Or at least creatures that look like they could be aliens, but they could also be mutants, or cyborgs, or evil spirits, or whatever. And it looks a bit similar because it seems to have that plastic look most Doom 3/Unreal 3 engine games have. Yes, there are these red blob-like things you see about halfway through the footage, but they could as well be balloons for all we know. If I had to compare it with anything I'd go for Quake 2.

All we've seen is a 30 second video which is not even one continuous scene and recorded with a shaky cam. Really, could Violet/nakke/someone else explain what the link between these two games (except for the developer and ALIENS) is?

EvilMike
June 9th, 2008, 03:41 PM
The link between the two games is the phenomenally useless developer who takes more than 10 years to make a game and still never finishes it. Prey and Duke Nukem forever are both infamous for this. Prey is of course different in that it did get released, but as I mentioned, it was only released after 3drealms handed over the development to another company (they still published it though).

nakke

I think the graphics, particularly the colors, and the overall setting look very similar to Prey. Of course there don't seem to be any portals etc, but the whole setting and feeling still makes it feel like Prey for me.

Fun fact about 3drealms: Considering the technology of the build engine (sprites etc), they never even released a single game in actual 3d.

Now that they're finally gone, this game will probably come out within the next 2 or 3 years.

I was thinking the same thing when I heard of 3D Realms closing. Since Duke Nukem Trilogy isn't affected by the closing of 3D Realms (and the "new" Apogee line, if I'm not mistaken), this is the greatest thing to happen for fans of the series in a while.

Black Ninja

With any luck, Mike will be exactly right. Also, on an unrelated note, I hope the "new Apogee" brings us a portable Hocus.

EvilMike
May 8th, 2009, 05:54 PM
I was being facetious but realistically speaking, the game does have a marginally better chance of coming out. Maybe 25% or so.

On the other hand, before the chance of it coming out was 0%, and if you multiply that by 25% you still get 0.

Sonyk
May 8th, 2009, 06:26 PM
I'd say it's better than that. The Duke Nukem IP is certainly worth quite a bit (13 years of vaporware damage notwithstanding) and in the many supposed iterations of the game, there has to be some assets available to salvage. If a publisher gets their hands on it they could hypothetically push it onto shelves within a year. Of course, it all depends on who gets ownership of the IP, but there's a better chance now than we ever had before.

I can already picture Gears of War 3 starring Duke.

Duke Nuker Forever will be devolepoed and released within a month from now.

Multiply?

EvilMike

well, multiply by 1.25 technically, but you get the point

So to get back on the original topic, new footage actually was released.
Its an animation reel, so most of it is just showing off animations in unfinished enviroments but what gameplay is shown looked fun:

Reminds me a lot of those God of War boss sequences, climbing on top of enemies and poking their eyes out and such.

Really fun, though it looks like none of my systems will ever be able to run this.

Also, I love the fact that you can see your own body and stuff when you get back up on your feet, and that he looks around as if he were in a bit of a daze. Really good feeling, though it'd probably get repetitive after falling down five times.

Apparently that level was going to be Duke playing Duke 3D in his Duke Mansion. That's awesome.

If Duke Nukem Forever comes out, I'm not going to care how good or bad it is. I'm going to buy both the game and the computing power necessary to play said game.

I've played the game during Firstlook 2010 (Amsterdam) behind the scenes. It's Duke Nukem alright. Don't expect anything more.

A live demo was showed during FL 2010 aswell, you can see that vid here.

(Notice for the purists: it has some sexual references, bad words and blood. Deffo a 16+ view)

I was there, too! The demo was the same as on the Penny Arcade Expo, and included 2 levels. It's also known that the demo came from an early build with little to no Gearbox involvement.

What surprised me there was that most of the people waiting in-line didn't even know what they were waiting for, or thought they were in-line for Rockstar's poker game. And only a few people were waiters/believers who said things like 'It's worth the wait' laughing and jizzing all the way outside..

It was inevitable really that this game was going to suck. As cool as Duke Nukem was back in the 90s, he hasn't aged well into the 21st century. Like Troglobite has just stated, this may as well have been released in around 2000 or so as the game feels incredibly dated; the nostaglia factor is kinda irrelevant since it's been so long between Duke Nukem releases, most gamers probably won't even remember him.
