It's a mix of random genres with similarities to popular games, but for the most part, it's just fun. It doesn't excel at any one of the stages or really try to, the whole package is just easy for anyone to access.

Played it and it is, unfortunatly, a little bland.
The first and second stages did not bring me any enjoyment. There is too little to do except kill or eat other creatures. I arrived in the tribal stage and I can say that I liked the humour of the little intro, but when the computer told me I had to take out or win the love of a few more species. I had enough.
Not my cup of tea I guess, but I hope the rest of you are enjoying it.

I haven't played it yet, but I heard it gets better when you get <s>out of Midgar</s> to the Space phase and that the Tribal phase is extremely short.

LOL. the staples near my house shelved it like a week ago. Heres my review. and what most people dont know A STORYLINE BEGINS LATER IN THE GAME.
Cell Stage: Pretty boring. you just swim into things and either eat them or die.
Creature Stage: Probably the most interesting, and the most time consuming.
You hunt or befriend species, and random events happen like alien abductions, apocalypse, meteors, etc. There are also several monsters called EPICS which are huge and have like 1,000 hp.
Tribal Stage: The most boring and annoying of all. You have to be constantly hunting if ur carnivore, but once you befriend or defeat only 1 of the 5 tribes you unlock Civilization, but you skip the City Substage
City Substage: At the end of tribal you get to create a city, not industrialized, but an old fashioned one with minor vehicles like carts and dirt roads.
Civilization: By far the easiest. You get 3 choices. Use religion to convert cities, buy the city, or blow the crap out of the city with stuff like Intercontinental Ballistic Missles (ICBM)
Space Substage: You get space flight, but only to the other planets in your system(so like 5 at most) Your searching for life on other planets, which you find. The major story starts here, even though most people dont think about it.
Galactic Stage: The best of all. If anyones played sins of a solar empire its alot like thats, but there are hundreds of quests, missions, and cool stuff you can do. You can place crops circles eventually which if by a tribal stage planets they will believe your a god. Also, there is one dominant story with the same names in every game.
THE STORY: Im not going to give away the story. but heres some hints
-Instruction manual, page 50, bottom section.
-Theres an achievement called "42" which you get for reaching the center of the universe. You'll say "oh thats easy". Ive tried. When you get close you'll see what i mean. Im still trying to figure out what to do.
Id say
Cell 6/10
Creature 8.5/10
Tribal 3/10
Civilization 7/10
Space/Galactic 10/10

The game is pretty awesome, especially the Creature, Civ and Space stages, as plunK pointed out.
What would make the game even more awesome would be more breadth, and a hardcore mode (or something), in which it'd take at least 50 hours to get to Space. Now especially the Tribal stage was far too short and bland, and the Creature stage could've been expanded upon too. Well, speaking about expanding upon things, it's pretty sure there'll be 50 gazillion expansions out for it, so perhaps in the end it'll be the 100 hour game I want it to be.
Oh, and one more thing. What's up with the graphics? I get it's not really a gfx-focused game, and it's good that it runs on all kinds of computers, but I would really have liked it to be a bit prettier. In many places the textures are superlowres, and the game overall never really uses even one CPU core fully.
Sonyk
September 8th, 2008, 09:21 AM
Procedural generation? Makes sense to me that it wouldn't use high-res anything really.
Not that I know, at all. Feel free to disregard me entirely.
nakke
September 8th, 2008, 10:30 AM
Procedural generation doesn't mean everything has to be super-lowres. Lots of graphically awesome games use procedural generation alot, granted not to generate whole worlds, but still.
Actually, Spore's textures etc are just fine, it's just that their quality goes bad way too fast even on the highest quality setting.

Here's my impression.
Cell stage: Simple, but fun. It's very short, but that's good.
Creature: This part has the best graphics of the game in my opinion. It's also entertaining because here is where you really design your creature. It is a bit repetitive after a while though. Also, I don't like how the stats work. If one part gives you "1 strike" or something like that, putting 5 of it won't give you "5 strike". The stats are based on whatever single part has the highest number, so if you want a maxed out creature that rules out some options. It's kind of silly, since they stacked in the creature creator demo. It feels like a last minute change that wasn't really thought out. Luckily it's still easy to get by with mediocre stats, and you can completely redesign your creature at the end of the stage, so it doesn't matter too much: as far as I can tell the only stat that carries on into Tribal is speed.
Tribal: Definitely the worst of the lot. It's just too boring. The only creativity allowed here is designing the "clothes" of your creature, which again suffers from the same stats problem as before. It's also hard to care about what the clothes look like, because you'll be so far zoomed out that you can't see the real details. It's possible to get through this stage very quickly, so it's not all bad. The easiest, and quickest way to beat it is to ally everyone, and only kill the tribes which make that impossible for you.
Civilization: The gameplay here is better than the Tribal stage, which is good. It does feel a bit oversimplified at times: you can only have one military land vehicle design, one military aircraft design, and so on. Furthermore, if you change the design at all, all of that unit will magically be changed as well. This feels a bit broken to me because you can do things like send in a bunch of really slow, heavily armed bombers into a city, and then retreat by redesigning them to be super fast. Another problem I have is that designing buildings and vehicles isn't nearly as rewarding as designing creatures, because you'll be zoomed out too far to see any real details. This applies to buildings especially, which you'll only ever get a good look at in the building editor. If they ever add a "sim city" stage in an expansion pack (like they had in the prototype game), this problem will be solved.
Space: This is the best part of the game, as it should be. First off, designing things becomes meaningful again. Also, it's just fun to explore and mess around with planets. There is one major complaint I have, however: it's really, REALLY annoying getting your planet(s) attacked all the time. Or your allies getting attacked. Seriously. It's like no one is able to defend themselves properly unless you are there to babysit. Getting constantly pestered with this garbage is not fun. Luckily, there's a partial solution: play as an isolationist. Don't contact other aliens until you are ready to take them on. Don't even make allies, they are usually more trouble than it's worth at that point.
Overall it's a good game. Not great, but good, and that's what I expected. Looking forward to see where they take it in the future.

This could be fixed with a few patches in the future and I hear there's also an expansion pack coming. There are a few annoyances here and there, but I have a rather positive opinion about this game.

That's funny. Last time I checked spore doesn't have much to do with evolution at all. Nothing evolves by itself. It has to be designed. That's creationism in action! If anything, religious fundamentalists should love this game.

Yeah it's a pretty obvious troll. Funny though.
Also, I just found out that space stage is practically 2 stages. The first is when you're struggling with getting set up, don't have many tools, and are getting attacked left and right. The second part begins when you unlock uber turrets...

That's exactly what I thought. Spore is more of a game about intelligent design or whatever than evolution. The only way evolution is involved is through the semantics that the game uses. Nonetheless I still found the blog to be hilarious.

Something from antispore.com
But the Bible teaches us that God was not done with man. For we were His creation and He then spoke to Noah in Genesis 8:21-27 after the flood.
“21. The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood. And never gonna give you up.
22. “Never gonna let you down.”
23.”Never gonna run around and desert you.”
24. “Never gonna make you cry.”
25. “Never gonna say goodbye.”
26. “Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.”
27.”Never truly believe anything you read on the Internet. There will always be cases of Poe’s Law.”
It’s these teachings that I’ve spent my life learning, believing and becoming, that have made me the woman that I am today.
That was amazing

So... I've gut Spore. Also the lame books (wich have nothing at all, only some art and the basic game info that you also have in your very own sporepedia. Also a poster, wich is too big and I have nowhere to put) that you shouldn't buy. Spore it ok, and the achivements tells me that I have played more than 50 hours of it by now...
Spore is enjoyable. But very the game is VERY linear, and it's getting boring after a while...
Also:
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2008/09/22/spores-lead-designer-on-spores-design/
We designed spore to be three equal thirds: creating things in the creators, sharing things through the Sporepedia and invisibly in general play just by creating and playing, and then playing the games themselves.
Haha. A whole third of adding peple as buddies and randomly downloading things. Awesome.
