Even though I think the whole Megaman 9 thing is a little lame and uninspired (Sega:"uh... too lazy to to good graphics and think about new cool gameplay... too lazy to attract new audience... I know! let's turn to 30 year old NES geeks and spend no effort on improving things!!!"), I have allways liked the old NES Megaman soundtrack. It seems that Sega still gut some good composers.
edit:
wait it's Capcom

Two things:
1) Its Capcom
2) The project wound up costing more than MM:Powered Up due to the team's insistence on making everything as NES-like as possible, this included paying programmers overtime to recreate things like the flashing graphics glitch. More effort went into this than you pansy-(-)(-)(-) whiners gave them credit for.

Just because they reused a few assets doesn't mean the game is a copy-paste job. Mega Man isn't a game where you want a new audience, it's aimed towards a very select group of people. This select group is pretty damn big, though, and they were starting to feel alienated by the newest Mega Man offerings. Going back to basics to satisfy your core audience is not a bad thing and shouldn't be taken as such.
and besides it costs more to make a full sprite animation than it does to use 3d assets

I really have to agree with Icon here |=. While my first reaction upon hearing that they were making an oldschool-style Megaman sequel was "=O wow, Capcom is awesome", in retrospect I think they're going about it all wrong. Rather, they should be trying to make a game that matches and improves upon the gameplay of the originals, but has graphics that simply maintain the mood of the game (not its technological level) and are still appealing to a new player.
Not to say I think it'll be a bad game; platformers with retro-styled gameplay are a lot of fun. But this looks like something made in Game Maker, and feels like Capcom is just trying to milk past success for all it's worth. It might be good (as any Megaman fan-game made in Game Maker might be), but it probably won't be popular and there is no chance it will be revolutionary in any way.

If memory serves, interviews stated that Capcom was reluctant at first, and Inafune had to convince them that it wouldn't just be a cash-in. I don't really see how you can compare it to a fan-game project, considering the features it carries across every platform (DLC, Achievements on all 3 versions, an item shop, completely new enemies and environments, new attack patters for old enemies, a superb soundtrack and delightful NES-era story), this is quality stuff. Sure, they could try attracting a new audience with an HD game, but considering the dubious quality of Mega Man 8 and the general public's lackluster response, going back to a retro-style should attract more than a few new players.
I can already assure you it'll be popular (I think even the soundtrack is out of stock at most retailers at the moment), especially due to the massive amounts of hype and critical acclaim numerous publications have already given it in addition to the general internet-public's reaction to it (which is completely fine, given that this is a digitally distributed game), but no one was asking it to be revolutionary. Not every game needs to be an amazing showcase of astounding graphics and CGI mastery, or how off a clever new idea to never be touched upon again (and it's not like Capcom doesn't do enough of that anyway). It'll be classic Mega Man-style action which is exactly what I'm willing to drop $10 for.

Because the engine is made to model a NES game, it isn't a NES game itself.
Also creating a NES cartridge would require them to charge something like $500 a piece just to break even.

This is now a general Mega Man 9 thread.
The game is pretty much (-)ing awesome.
Hate it or love it, it's Mega Man action, plain and simple. And it's not as though it's completely thrown back to the stone age, the even Mega Man, in his reused asset glory has new sprites.
This game is the epitome of downloadable gaming.

... is it as hard as the predecessors? Call me petty, but I don't want to pay money for a game I'm unable to beat.
Sonyk
September 24th, 2008, 03:22 AM
It is as hard as the player wants. Without using any of the items, it is pretty hard, probably harder than MM2. But since you've still got the full-fledged item store, they make the game worlds easier. I wouldn't have been able to beat Wily without my 9 E-Tanks and 9 lives, as well as the damage reducer.
And even if it's still too hard, you can buy Proto Man and just charge shot your way through, which ought to make it significantly more tollerable.
