View Full Version : Christmas Contest
PurpleJazz

Time to get into the Christmas mood for another year! To increase the spirit of the community, looks like it's time for another contest. =P
Here comes my 3rd annual contest, and this time as the name suggests the aim this time is to make the best Christmas/holiday themed level.
Rules:
The level can be any game type, although MP is prefered as SP is a little awkward to host online. This will not affect the judging though.
Only one entry per person, however collabs are allowed.
The level must be newly made for this contest. Any level found released longer than a week ago before this contest starts will be disqualified with no exceptions. You may not convert/remake a previous level either.
The level will be primarily judged based on how well it stays true with the Christmas spirit, which does not have to be from any particular point of view. This does not mean gameplay doesn't matter; it will be judged too, so don't go making a 10 minute job.
Although I'm leniant with this, any level that clearly does not have anything to do with Christmas/holiday season will not be accepted.
Send me the levels either by uploading them to J2O and posting the link here, by uploading them to a file sharing site and PMing me the link, or by sending them to my MSN at billy_the_big@hotmail.com.
The deadline is 23rd December.
What are you waiting for? Go make some entries ;)

I feel as if I should enter, though I'm a bit stuck on the whole Christmas theme... I'll figure out something creative.

Why just Christmas? Are holidays in general or just winter not acceptable themes?
PurpleJazz
Nov 2, 2008, 03:14 AM
Yeah, they'd both be fine. Holiday/winter themes are in my opinion completey acceptable as christmas levels. Anything else associated with Christmas is fine too.

suprising
surprising, with an r.
Well, as far as this hasn't been made official yet, I was going to build an Assault level with the Borealis WTF tileset. However, I felt as if this wasn't christmas-y enough, so I decided to try and do something else. Unfortunately, by now, it is safe to say that I won't finish this in time.
Sorry, guys. Now someone else will need to take up last place.

Oh, and by the way, if we Americans are "lazy" why don't you put the 'v' in have? Also, are you enjoying your gas prices over there? In the US, gas is going down..

[VERY LATE RESPONSE XD]
<s>If your going to make a contest, atleast pick a freaking winner. I don't mean to be a whinner, but honestly, we wanted to know who really came on top. I never would have volunteered to be in this if I was going to know no one was going to win. JEEZE.</s>
That's all I have to say about that.

Ok, since you guys are so desperate...
1. A Generic Christmas CTF
http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/2216/contestwinnerwa4.png
This level captures the christmas spirit very well. It feels jolly and gives you that nice warm feeling during the holiday season, and makes a few innovative tileset uses, some are a bit weird but the majority of the level is well decorated. The layout and gameplay are decent enough too. While this level is nothing too great, it does what I set out you to do and so it is the winner, gj Spazzer.
2. Aurora Citadel
http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/4018/contestwinner2yw9.png
While this is the best entry gameplay wise, it doesn't feel quite as merry as GenXmas CTF. I dislike the dark feeling in this level, something I wouldn't think of as christmassy. The eyecandy also feels a little "spammed" and some uses are a bit too abstract for my tastes, however I liked how you extended the houses. It still gets 2nd place for having the best gameplay as mentioned beforehand. I can see this level being a decent choice for 2vs2 TBs.
3. Deck the Halls
http://img357.imageshack.us/img357/7808/contestwinner3tq8.png
It's such a shame this level has some serious flaws, had this had worked out it would have easily got 1st place no questions asked. I love the tileset here; a genius and funny idea of "decorating" caste to represent "Deck the halls". While the concept of 4 bases might sound like a cool idea, in reality it just glitches up the way CTF works. Also, I dislike how open the layout is, but at least there is no Seeker PU. All in all, this could have been great, if the gameplay would actually work out, but for the "cool" factor and the clever christmas theme it gets 3rd place.

Too bad I didn't update my level before the deadline. I don't know why I always make levels with confusing eye candy for contests, but I hope I won't do it again.
