View Full Version : JCS Awards 2008

I'm only posting this because a few people were wondering about them, but it seems the usual organizer (R3ptile) isn't interested or simply hasn't had the time to post them. R3p, if you still want to hold the awards, please post here or reply to your pms!
If still no reply, the awards will be held by me and qz.

Good. The JCS awards haven't been this late before, and there are a lot of great new levels released this year which deserve a chance in the spotlight.

I doubt r3p will do them, so you might as well go ahead. Also, make sure the thread includes a link to all the previous award threads, because it's fun to see past editions.

Alright, thanks for replying. Me and Qz are going to handle 2008, PJ said he would rather us do it anyway.

I'd like to see a better variety of categories this year than in the past 3 years. For example 2004. If not, it just shows your lazy ;D

There will not be a large number of categories to make voting harder.
The nominess will probably be announced tomorrow.

Will Karrot Shire make a chance? ^^
Vegito
Jan 5, 2009, 03:08 AM
That, if it would be a category, is something Karrot Shire would always win as theres only one 'level' like this ;)
No contest ;P

Heh, I'd have volunteered to do this had I actually been active through 2008. Still haven't gotten around to looking over noteable releases made during my relative absence (which has been a while!) so I'm looking forward to the nominations!

2008's best JCS'er:
Not sure, really.
2008's best CTF level: Starlit Summit
It's big, but I like big ctf levels. Good for JDC.
2008's best Battle level: Condemned
Gonna agree with blur here. Too bad it's not on the nominations, because more people need to see how good it is. It's one of the few levels with water that's actually fun! I was tempted to vote for enter the chaos though.
2008's best (non CTF/Battle) level: Lost Luggage Landfill (Race)
This is one of my favourite race levels.
2008's best MP Pack: Find it Out
A lot of good choices here, but I liked this one the most.
2008's best SP Pack:
This is a tricky one for me because it's the main award I'm listed in. I've decided not to vote here.
2008's best tileset/tileset conversion: Gothic Cathedral
A lot of solid choices here. For me it was a tossup between fortress of forgotten souls and gothic cathedral. Both a are VERY good tilesets. I decided to go with cathedral, because I think it has a great art style, and a very unique theme.
2008's best music: Not sure.
2008's most improved JCS'er: PlunK
After a series of fairly unremarkable releases, he made a DOM pack which was actually quite solid, except for that silly Diamondus V level. He originally uploaded it as a TSF-only version, and then later reuploaded it as a 1.23 compatible version. I look forward to seeing what else he makes.

Wow, surprised to see I got mentioned in two categories, to be honest. I'll get to the voting then.
Best JCS'er: DarkSonic
He's one of the few people that amaze me almost every time they open JCS. Not only that, but collaborating with him and seeing him work really made me feel like he has mastered the program.
Best CTF level: Starlit Summit by Ragnarok
An obvious choice. This level is very large, yet works fine for even 2vs2's, next to being an awesome choice for larger events. The gameplay is delicious, not to mention the looks of the level.
Best Battle level: Enter the Chaos by FireSword
This level is certainly a crafty piece of art. Making use of the infamous smoke rings, he makes this level fun to play by invoking confusion on it's players from time to time. Plain to see awesome.
Best (non CTF/Battle) level: Pearl-Shell Shore by Quickz
With the upcoming popularity of Domination levels, I think we should cherish the best of the best. This level certainly lives up to those demands, making a good example for all Domination levels to come.
Best MP Pack: Impressions ع by DarkSonic
My vote was wobbling on the edge of Alliance, but came down after all. This pack has lots of fun levels and make a great fun server on its own.
Best SP pack: Episode Four: The Resistance by EvilMike
Fourth in the ongoing series of the Resurrection of Devan. This pack does a great job at storytelling, enough to keep half of the community waiting for episode five. The puzzles are original and make you think about your next moves. Well done in all.
Best tileset: Waste Treatment Facility by cooba
This tileset, while not the first in its kind, gives us an easy to use tileset which lets us build huge building-like levels, as well as factories, cities, even space bases. This tileset has lots to offer and can transform into what the builder desires.
Most improved JCS'er: Troglobite
Though he is quite new to the JCS scene, I feel as if he has learned to take in view all possibilities with JJ2 and JCS and made full advantage of it. This single player pack was not spectacular, but certainly refreshing when it comes to the puzzles and the use of triggers. His CTF level with four bases was also quite refreshing, and let's not forget his oncoming 'Mexican Jesus' lawnmower levels. Troglobite is the new Uri Geller of JCS.
Well, that's my two cents. Of course I didn't want to vote for myself, but I'd like to say that I am honoured to be even mentioned.

We apologize for changing the list a lot. Mainly because we've had problems with j2o's download section, which made it harder for us to verify the nominees. From what I've heard, other people have the same problems.
If anyone has suggestions, we'd gladly take them now. Better sooner than later.

Here goes nothing ... (based on what I've seen myself)
Best Creator: Ragnarok truly because most of his levels to me have been some of the most impressive levels I've seen in my life time.
Best CTF Level: None. In my mind, they all are brillant, so I'm not going to choose.
Best Battle Level: Enter the Chaos by FireSworD because it was so unique! I had never seen a level like this before, and it had some surprises in it. After playing in this level, this was honestly the best level I had seen this year Battle wise.
Best Miscellaneous Level: Pearl-Shell Shore by Quickz. This was the one out of the 5 choices that really caught my attention. After playing in it, my decision was decided.
Best Multiplayer Pack: Err.. More CTF Levels? by Ragnarok. Why? The overall quality seemed quite higher then any of the other packs in the selection. I'm not just choosing this pack because I picked Rag as the best JCS creator of 2008, but because I had a blast playing in every one of these levels. Don't get me wrong all the other packs where good, but I think this deserves full credit.
Best SP Pack: None
Best Tileset/Conversion: The Fortress of Forgotten Souls by Blade. I had been waiting to use this tileset since I first heard about it. After using it in one of the levels in Memories 2, it became clear, this had a lot of thought built into it. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty hard to use, and is a fun challenge when it comes to Eyecandy.
Most Improved Creator: <s>minmay</s> None

Best JCS'er: N/a
While I have seen a bunch of 2008's levels, I don't think I've seen enough of some of the work of these people to fully appreciate their skills.
Best CTF/battle/other: N/a
I also don't think I've had enough experience in these category to really answer.
Best Multiplayer Pack: Memories 2
The normal levels Hitch made were pretty high quality, and the bonus flag run level was awesome. I love the dead-zone concept.
Best Single Player: O Brother
Maybe this didn't have any groundbreaking new gameplay or anything, but the ending gave it the cooles plot I've seen in an upload on J2O.
Best Tileset: Gothic Cathederal
This is a very beautiful tileset. I especially love the roman numeral destruct scenery tiles. Only thing that I don't like about it is that it is too big for 1.23
Most Improved: N/a
I haven't been around long enough. I don't know what anyone's old work looks like.

Best JCSer: Darksonic
His eyecandy is seems a bit overdone at some times <s>CONTESTS FTW.</s>
but his gameplay is excellent, creative. a good use of tilesets. the most thing i wonder when he always is able to make truly good Multiplayer levels in different styles.. sometimes small and cramped, sometimes more open. i bet he picks those sizes what fits with the tileset. or what looks more better then it. i almost wanted to pick snz because his Eyecandy is better. and his Dreamless pack was truly good and Creative.. however i didn't found that much real Concepts in gameplay in Snz latest levels (alliance) like before. i am not saying they were bad. but in the pack like New ages it gave a bit more special things together.
Best CTF Level: Castle Of Mysteries by Hitch
yes.. Whine if you want guys. But i'm going for Castle of mysteries. at first. i never knew there was a huge chamber beneath the upper side of the level.. when i discovered it in the event, I was even shocked. Can you imagine? Shocked of a jj2 Level? anyway, the Level is so conceptish and Big. like the trick with the warps and one ways, the RF power up, the Ice and float ups. such nice. Really nice in huge games. i think this really deserves a chance. don't blame me.
Best Battle Level: Mixxed Up by Darksonic
i like the rough style this level shows off. the music, the tubes, the music. everything seems to fit perfect. he used tricky things here like small platforms with Carrots and Seeker ammo which all worked good after all, bravo. the warp at the left with the Toaster Power up gives a good handle in the layout. the Scenery looks O.K. however i found the scenery in Desolation Chemistry (snzs level) better. the Background unmasked Scenery used in the foreground was also a nice idea for in the pits. in this situation people knew where the pits where so there were no death pits. It seems Darksonic thought trough things things really wisely withouth people actually notice. The layout is fine in each other with much advantages.
Best Non-CTF/Battle: Lost Luggage Landfill by Ragnarok
This is a Race with many possibilities, tricks and shortcuts. concepts and you can run quite smooth in it. it is pretty hard to make a decent race. and This race really stands out. the Eyecandy is ok, but not confusing, It is fine. I also betatested this, only to invite this all before making is a good job. People shouldn't underrate the fact that Making a good race isn't quite simple.
Best SP Pack: Dreamless by Snooze
It seems that Creativity never goes to far, since Snz released this pack a few months ago with very busy working on it. i bet he is already preparing to release another, in other words: SNZSPEED. Why is it Creative? Well, At first.. People always seem to make Devan story's because off the importet Devan boss etc. but Snz found a Special way of making an Single player pack (which i have never seen) to make a quite Mysterious pack. not to many enemy's but Really enjoyable! i really like it when People think more about the Story then about putting A lot of enemy's and pick ups. i mean, Snooze thought really wise to put the amount greatly so it actually fits with the story and the Pack.
Best Tileset/Tileset Conversion: Gothic Cathedral by Galavant
The ones which Quickz listed, this one was probably the most creative. however i don't say the graphics look the best, but not everything looks so tiled. (placed in tiles seperately) if you get what i mean. it seems more smooth. and it is very unique. the dark walls and the lighter makes the Set with more possibilities.. just like the extra scenery stuff and the large amount of event tiles. It seems everything this Set is almost perfect. and the Shadows also look Perfectly done.
Best MP Pack: New Ages ||| by Snooze
this also goes to Snooze, since i found the quality actually better then Codename:alliance.. not talking about amount. and slightly more enjoyable then Find it out, in Overall. My first Impression was the Awesome Original Eyecandy. and the nice concepts with Layouts used in tilesets. i Like it when people make layouts fitting with a tileset. like the Layout in Kurast Bazaar, where the masked Rooftops make the gameplay really special and original, which means it's Fun. even the Small levels like "water" were simply awesome, with again the original eyecandy made with labrat. And the RF climb spots in Northscar Needle. These are Both Gameplay and Eyecandy
wise! very original.
Best Improver: SP4ZZ3R
Or how you guys call them: Spaz18<s>.23409823423</s>. i mean.. if you look back in the year.. his levels were a lot more platformy, Chaotic, and Too many Irritating Concepts to count. but in a short time, he managed to control this all. his ground looks more organic, the space is bigger. there is actually a way to learn the levels, since People can actually get it and are not needed to go on millions of paths to collect things. which is quite less frustrating.. Since he Learned all those things, i really think this man deserves a chance to the award.

i don't know if this one counts but,
Best Music/Music Conversion: Pez doesn't Rock by Luigi Electrico
<s>Why? since it's not BOOM BOOM aka PERCHE PERCHE musique</s>
well.. i striked it but it was quite serious.. i actually think i DID pick this one because of that. Well, where to start. he upbeated the Song to something special. it sounds faster, And the edited Drums made the Style so differently, that it is actually a master piece for finding out. it sounded a lot more cheerful. and better then the original, since i think the melody fits more with this upbeated version.
Damn, i just wrote a whole review? oh well, for the guys who took the time to read this all. Don't be a (-) to be a no-lifer to correct all Spelling mistakes i made. I have my reasons.
That's all, Or actually, It's a lot.

Either way, I do believe I'd go with CotS if not this, so PJ wins here.
2008's best Battle level:
Enter the Chaos by FireSworD
Condemned wasn't too far behind, but this level is very creative and plays best, so it was a pretty clear winner here.
2008's best (non CTF/Battle) level:
Birdie Always Wins by Birdie
PSS was real close...
2008's best MP Pack:
Legends by PurpleJazz
I'd vote for both this and NA III if I could... PJ's become a fine levelmaker and he deserves credit. (The pack is of course real damn good and worth the hype, too.)
2008's best SP Pack:
Dreamless by Snooze
For the sake of fluctuation, I'll leave EM out of this vote.
If TR2 was a finished work, it'd be a strong contender. I want to see some more SP from Snuz... Preferably with clearer directions, though.
Dreamless boasts some cool effects and a strong theme.
2008's best tileset/tileset conversion:
Waste Treatment Facility by cooba
CrysilisV, The Fortress of Forgotten Souls and Gothic Cathedral are all great, but this set suits my tastes the best, so I'll go with it.

"Best new concept"?
That should be category. KarrotShire should win that. :-)

Don't forget other new concepts, such as Domination...
But KarrotShire is from 2007!
Don't forget that is was far from finished in 2007. The actual 'gametype' only got around to completion in 2008.

Also, if you wanna vote Karrot Shire, you can also do so under "Best non-battle/ctf level"

I'd choose the "worst non-battle/ctf level" category if I were to vote for Karrot Shire.

Best JCS'er: Not sure, all made fantastic levels.
2008's best CTF level: Sunken Realm by Purplejazz
While perhaps not the best sprite layer ec (although still good), the theme is very nice and probably what I like about it the most. I actually enjoyed all the games I've played here. It has has a somewhat varied layout, albiet not perfect but a lot of choices which makes it fun.
2008's best battle level: Frozen Throne by Superjazz
Don't know why this level isn't getting recognized. It was very fun to play during bash imo, and it's good for duels as well as games with a lot of people. The theme is nice too. Condemned had an awesome atmosphere but I personally did not like the open layout, and I didn't even use the water that much. I also liked Mixxed Up, but I don't see myself wanting to play there a lot. I guess a lot of levels beat Frozen Throne in certain aspects, but this level has a sort of overall appeal to me. There's also The Shrine which I really liked, but that level has subpar gameplay.
2008's best (non CTF/Battle): N/A, all are good levels but none stand out to me.
2008's best MP pack: Alliance by XLM
While the other packs contain levels that probably have more favorable layouts, Alliance is the one that really left an impression and I still play the levels just for the look of them. That's not to say none of the levels are really fun, I enjoyed a few levels in this pack, and some simply for their ridiculous tile usage.
2008's best SP pack: Episode Four: The Resistence by EvilMike
Although not my favorite of the series so far, some levels had really clever ideas. As usual the levels keep my interest and have me wanting more.
2008's best tileset/tileset conversion: The Fortress of Forgotten Souls by Blade
It's a hard set to use, but whatever you can make just looks amazing. The other sets were also quite nice but this one stands out because it's a very solid professionally done set.

Best JCSer: Ragnarok - Several high quality levels that also bring some new concepts.
Best CTF level: Nightfall in Noobland - During Bash10 this was the funniest CTF-level to play in there. It might not offer stunning new gameplay, but it is still unique in how the bases are placed, and it is also well balanced.
Best Battle level: Enter The Chaos - This one has got a very interesting layout. It fits JDC events very well. I find the smoke-pit combination a bit evil, but it is also sweet when you're able to fool your opponents with it.
Best Misc level: Pearl-Shell Shore - I was quite surprised how Quickz made a level with that kind of a theme with Mystic Isle-set. It also had great and easy-to-learn gameplay so here goes my vote.
Best MP pack: Way too close to call.
Best SP pack: Episode Four: The Resistance - In my opinion this episode was a bit too short, but nevertheless the story progresses during this one, and it always kept me interested to go forward. I'm eager to play the final episode.
Best tileset: The Fortress of Forgotten Souls - I honestly didn't expect this set to be that sweet when I saw some of Blade's scraps. You just can be amazingly creative with this set.
Best Improver: FawFul - I liked his recent CTF-levels almost as much as the others outta there. In level decoration he probably doesn't even need improving anymore.
Alright, just a quick voting with quick comments. My votes stay. Prematurely congratulations to those who will win.

BEST JCSER : Vivando
Heehee, probably saw that coming eh? Well, Vivvy here just made some of the nicer stuff this year, and I guess that's why I gave him my vote here. Yeah. He's the man. DS is however "da man". Err, okay next vote.
BEST CTF : NorthScar Needle
Yeah, I really liked this level, it's kinda fun to duel in, has no seekers [which is always great] and some of the ammo is placed really nicely. I just dislike the floatups on the sides and the really small holes. Otherwise FTW.
BEST BATTLE : Headhitting
I think this is that jungle level Snooze made. I really liked the layout, quite nice. Except the few camp spots, which isn't really an issue when there are 16 players.
BEST NON CTF/BATTLE : Lost Luggage Landfill
Yeah, this level truly inspired me. It's a brilliant race. I think whoever made it should be really proud.
BEST MP PACK : Find It Out
Hmm, big bunch of big-belly-giggly levels here. They're all fun, sadly not getting as much recognition as they should, but that should change soon. :]
BEST SP PACK : EPISODE FOUR BY MICHAEL
Wow, I think it's bad that I don't even remember the name to this pack. Err...
BEST TILESET : Waste Treatment Facility
Yeah, I rated this really high, and I meant it. ;P
FASTEST IMPROVER : CrimiClown
I haven't seen material from previous years so much, but from what I gather you've gotten MUCH better :]

I wasn't going to vote at first considering I wasn't around for most of 2008 and haven't seen or am able to give a valid opinion on most of the categories. However considering the organization tells me there are some nasty ties in several of the listed categories I've decided to give my opinion on the things I do think I'm qualified to say something about.
Best JCS'er:
I would've voted for EvilMike but that's a pretty biased opinion since I haven't seen a good deal of the work of most other people on this list so I'm gonna leave this one blank.
Best CTF level:
Starlit Summit by Ragnarok. All levels on this list are very good actually but I specifically liked Starlit Summit for it's sheer size, visual style and the few innovative ideas it has. Like EvilMike said, this is also a good level for JDC.
Best Battle level:
Enter the Chaos by FireSworD. I admit this is a bit of an unfair vote considering I haven't seen ALL the levels on this list but Enter the Chaos is just such an awesome level that I doubt any of them would've deserved the vote THAT much more to actually make voting for this invalid.
Best Non CTF/Battle level:
Tempted to vote for Pearl-Shell Shore here considering it's a great level. Sadly it's also the only level out of this list I actually saw so this is also gonna be blank.
Best MP Pack:
Also blank. Out of these packs I've only checked out the CTF levels so far, so it's impossible to give a decent opinion here.
Best SP Pack:
Tomb Rabbit 2 beta by Kejero. Honestly I only played Mike's pack and TR2, but TR2 is just so overwhelmingly amazing that I very much doubt any of the other packs on this list would beat it (and the opinions I've heard from other people reinforce this notion).
Best Tileset/Conversion:
Fortress of Forgotten Souls by Blade. I'm actually working on a level with this set and to be honest I must say that after using it it's not all that's cracked up to be: it's very hard to use and the more I try the less seems possible. Still it's a fantastic looking tileset that can really produce some very nice visuals with it if you use it correctly. More importantly in my opinion it just blows all other nominees out of the water so it gets my vote all the same in the end.
Best improved JCS'er:
Also blank. I've barely seen any of the levels produced by any of the authors of this list so I can't even begin to imagine who qualifies for this.

Organisation.. that would be me in this case. I'm not sure if anything has changed at all, but I heard CelL talking about the awards a while ago so I encouraged him to finally vote! The more the merrier :D.. I see no one else posted during the last hour, so:
