View Full Version : Massive listserver spam

If you check the listservers right now, you'll see a huge number of fake servers. At this moment, I count eleven. Most of have the same name, and are meant as some sort of petty attack between a pair of newbie clans nobody cares about. Unfortunately, these servers clutter the page, and crowd out real servers. A JDC event today had to be canceled in part because the server was way down at the bottom of page 3, after pages of spam.

I'd like to call on whoever is doing this to stop it. Also, to anyone who administrates the listserver, I think it would be a good idea to either block these IP addresses (not sure if this is still policy or not), or perhaps have some sort of limit of 4 or 5 servers per ip address, and going over the limit causes automatic delisting. I've seen this kind of abuse of the listserver before, but usually its only been a few servers, not 10. I'm not sure who is most active in maintaining it these days, so I figured I'd just post it here.

Oh you poor thing, having to scroll past a couple of fake servers to find real ones.

And they stopped doing bannings. I know how to cause like 80 servers at once from the same IP, its rather easy. I did it once with 3 so if you joined one, you were in the game lol. That's playing dirty to get more players though.

I don't mind this it's not MASSIVE, it's just a slight annoyance but I find it rather funny.

Oh, is that your best? I myself, being the 1337est among 1337 can make 897 servers from the same IP with a move of a finger. And that's when I'm tired.

Hmmm that post accomplished a lot. GJ.

Strange... Usually the event server is full and people need to be kicked but when its only 2 pages further only 6 can find it?

Anyway, I couldnt join so I dont really mind :D

Indeed, I find this quite despicable. A few other occasions when ive decided to play Jazz at odd hours in the morning there are several spam servers and this bugs me.

Well if your people like me, when i feel like playing jazz in JDC season, I dont usually look to see if theres an event, i check the list server. If its not visible on the first page i usually guess its not there because its not typical for the Jazz list servers to go for pages, and this may be the case for several others.

In my opinion, it would almost be beneficial if it were somehow possible to give the major genuine servers, hence JDC, Zeal, Duel and possibly Sfazist should have list priority on the list server, hence bumping them to the top. I dont know if Blurred can whip something up or how hard it would be, but it would be one defence to this spamming rubbish

Doesnt /relist also brings you at the top? If not i agree that there should be something to bump the important servers.

I disagree that some servers are of more importance than others and should therefore be stuck on top of the page. It'd be unfair. Anyhow, I think there should be a restriction for the number of servers one person can have on the list at once. Also, unplayable servers should not be kept there (there were servers hosted with the sole purpose of advertising a website or saying a not-so-polite message to someone). And I feel that passworded servers would better stay on the bottom of the list, they'll be found by the ones they're hosted for anyway.

I do support this idea, it will keep the server list a bit more clean en effective

Although it would also be a good idea to limit the number of servers from a single IP to one server per port. That means about 4 servers max from a single IP and each one has to have a different port. There is really no point trying to host multiple servers on the same port - maybe for having more poeple join your server as a result of multiple entries, but that's just spam.

Eeeh....
I know who is doing that and why. It's just because the clan leader banned a few people. I mean,it's wrong, but don't destroy other people's game because you got banned from one server. Remember, not only YOU are playing this, there are other real people and they want to play, not to look your 10 same attack messages to some new clan.

Nimrod can ban IP addresses from the list server network, but personally I don't think thatis a permanent solution to such events. See my previous post.

4 Games per IP Max (Unless a request is made, say someone has a server farm and hosts servers on tons and an exemption could be made) sounds like a good idea. Also the possibility *MAYBE* of people who post spam like in the screenshot by Hunter get limited to one game per IP so there not blocked, but they cant keep spamming.

If someone contacted me on MSN (which I'm always signed into) or any of the staff @ digiex.net the list could have been cleared up then and there when the problem arose (but this is the first I am hearing of it).

But banning IP's doesnt work, and also opens the big question of List Server control which brings mass moans from people and something we at Digiex never want to go down again, the list server is an open network.

I also dont like the idea of giving priority to servers based on this believe of "official'ness". Its an open network, and all (real) game servers deserve to be listed, with no priority given. Its not hard for someone who really cares about JDC or any other event, to search through the server list and find it. I mean, any popular game has 1,000 of servers and people search without a problem for the server they wish, so to hear about people struggling with 3 pages of 8 servers seems a little silly.

However, the List Server is open to the community, so if any conceses is made, most likely with FQuist/Overlord/Monolith/BlurredD approval, it would be considered.

Edit: Another good solution that BlurredD could add to jj2+ and its improved server list view, is to not show pinging servers that dont respond (or at least push them to the bottom). That would make the ingame client viewer work much better, and the same thing could be added to GIP scripts.

This was inactive,but I'll post.

It's a shame people do this instead of solving their problems by discussion. (This was because: the host of those servers insulted the clan, the clan leader banned him from his server, others banned clan leader, clan leader went to other servers and convinced hosts to ban those who banned him and so the spam started...really.)

About the ban,I agree: BAN THEM ALL. NO MERCY. It's better that we have less players or servers than 30 spammers and fake servers.
