Based on snz' thread yes, but this is for the opposite side of JJ2: online play. Although this sort of thread has (probably) been many times done before, I'm just interested to see what people would think now.

I suggest making two lists: one for the best players out of those who are active right now, and one for the best players of all time.

Ah, back when I was young, Bobby was considered practically unbeatable, and his losing to iCeD once was actually worthy of a J2O newspost. Don't think there's such an uncontested domination right now, though I haven't really been following competitive play closely.

Heh, same, I thought it would be a thread about whom we liked best :)

I suppose Viv, Faw, Veg, Gry, Warrior (and probably some others) are the hardest to beat these days. Including the old days, I'd have to add Dizzy, IceD, Spotty, Super Saiyan, Turtleslayer, Boarder and a whole bunch of others who don't come to mind right now.

My favourites are (on playing style):

1) FireSworD - Purely based on offensive playing style and skill.
2) Grytolle - Always a great player, ranging from great tactics, to good abilities, to great timing.
3) CzEcH - VERY offensive, and I really like the small tricks CzEcH surprises people with.
4) Superjazz - Really good team-player, quite a really good duellist.
5) Napoleon - Always good at making the kills, making the scores, and whatnot.
6) Warrior - Pretty threatening as a player, pretty much the same description as Napo.
7) SkulL - Was always really good to have as a partner and would excel on his own. I barely remember how good he was but I remember liking how he plays a lot.
8) Vegito - Probably should be higher, but I prefer other playing styles. Still exceptional.
9) Darksonic - Moreorless an ideal partner in 3v3s, good at scoring.
10) Craig David - Yeah.

Probably misordered/forgot people. Oh well.

I kinda thought putting myself in the list was not smart }>
(And as said, the list was just in a random order, too :P)

7) SkulL - Was always really good to have as a partner and would excel on his own. I barely remember how good he was but I remember liking how he plays a lot.

He was what "offensive" gave its meaning at JJ2 basically. That guy *really* played so extremely offensive and overpowered players mostly. Heh. Basically like Czech, just a bit better still though.

I think everybody has forgot a couple of legendary players. Like me
1) UrbsGpW - pretty decent team playa
2)Dizzy
3) Flea
4)Iced
5)sexybabewhohatesmygutsakagummibearGpW
6)Gry - pwng omfg, beast motha(-)(-)(-)(-)in playa should be nr 1, but im there
7)Vegito - read above
8)SJ - 2nd beast team playa, I pwn him howevah
9)ChavrashGpW - too cocky for his own good, but a good finisher and the official deity (god) of ZAITOX
10)Rep - the ultimate mofo, enigma pointed out his lag problems already, so why im repeating them is beyond me
11) enigma - well this mofo is an itneresting one. gr8 teamplaya, gr8 guy, i hate the fact we like the same levels and he usually gets better score in most of them. I would say he has the best combo between being nice and playing good in the whole community. there it's official, out of the people who actually matter, which is the people i listed, he is by far the least douchiest of them(us) all. He roxx. really.
12)cell - omfg, i luv his levels. he's the best guy for 2v2's. not just cuz he plays gr8 in a team, but beacuse this mofo got taste know wha i'm sayin? if ur gonna have a levelvote u better bring this n**** along. he'll come up with a level u havent seen in ages... or ever. and then it'll be so original that u and him will beat the most well oilde duelling machine out there because of quickly grasping the logic of the level. a great levelmaker understands levels and all the neat tricks.
13) shadow gpw - he's my clanleader, ergo he has to be on the list, right? right.
14)disguise gpw - he's a legend, he has to be on the list
15) CB - a friggin machine of a teamplaya and a dictator who should inspire us all.
16) hehe u didn't make the list, in ur faces...
17) unhit is pretty nice as well. a german and a metalhead. definitely a bonus. TF is made out of good people. them's the bible belt folks of this here community. good people. true jazzers. values and stuff.

ok 1st thing is 1st supajazz, you cant have a top 10 without Bobby. I mean, I'd add some other oldies, but I guess that's just - we'll never trully know, because as in sports, players come and players go and you can't compare different generations.
Bobby and a couple of DL'ers along with a couple of GpW'ers (and KK-ers come to mind) would duke it out with the new wave of players... but there is no real possible comparison. That being said, Bobby has got to be on every list. Like somebody said, when he got beat, threads were made.
Iced and Flea pwnt CTF but bobby was overall numero 1 without any doubt.

Whereas today the most constant duo would be Gry and Veg. Add SJ and you get todays top three over a period of the last couple of years (I'm not saying the situation right NOW is the same).

While reminiscing over the good old days another clan came to mind Killer Kings. Their leader Athlon KK pwnt. He came after players like Bobby, Gummi and Iced had maybe already got a bit bored with JJ2 and started playing a bit less. I think he managed a 10-7 game against bobby and we were all in awe of his skill.
I think the best i got against gummi was 10-1. Hell maybe it was even 10-0.
Funny though, I mainly knew her from the GpW irc channel and I always made fun of her and I was pretty certain I could pwn most players out there. But then again my opponents were Newspaz and Shadow:)... Well she sure showed me.
Every generation has great players. In these past 5 years a lot of greats sprang up.
I remeber GryBC. He started showing up on the screens before jj2wc2. After jj2wc1 I was in the best form in my life. Me and chav played 2v2's like crazy and god did we own. But after new year I had less and less time for jj2. its amazing what kind of a difference one or two 2v2's a day more or less can make in one's form. GryBC was a n00b in january. And as my form started it's freefall stage due to my limited activity (and sadly due to my natural limitations), this Balkan Clanmember started his rise to power, fame (and fortune:)).
A player the likes jj2 had not seen in quite some time was born out of scratch in less than 6 months. And when he reached half his potential he was better than I ever was.

You know who that playa was? GrytolleCC.
My balkan brotha:)

Seriously SJ, do add bobby (gummi, iced, flea etc.).

EDIT:
I would agree with the top 10 ever list, if it were called top 10 in the past 3-5 years.

Pretty hard to judge, since I never played a single duel vs Bob/IceD.

With Flea I played once a year ago, but obviously he was much rustier then, than in early days.

Also Gummi could play well only in a few levels (B1/DW/JAIL basically.) Not kinda enough for me. Also hard to compare her to the next generation. ;P

And since Grytolle barely duels, I didn't add him. I could have made a teamplayer list separately though.

I'm don't know too much about the current standings, so I'm basing my list on what I personally experienced (mostly in clanwars) between 1999 and 2006. The list is somewhat in chronological order; of when I believe people attained their 'peaks'. Note that I've never really been into duels myself so my list is *mostly* teamplay based (the exceptions probably are FireSworD, BunnyElmer and Vegito, whom I included mainly for their dueling skills).

- Dizzy: for reasons already stated by Urbs, although I never got the pleasure of playing a clanwar against DL or DM when he was at his peak.
- FireSworD: every time I played against him in the old days, he was a very powerful opponent. Granted of course, that he had some decent teammates on his side, because not everyone knows how to adapt to his playstyle. But in duels, his strength was indisputable.
- CelL: when FoR beat CC in 2003, I remember him as being the strongest player on their team. In subsequent 2vs2s/3vs3s in the months thereafter, he remained a strong player.
- BunnyElmer/Anakin: in the few years before we permanently 'joined forces' in 2004, I've always considered him to my biggest rival (in a friendly way) when it came to competitive play and leading a clan in general. He truly left an impression on me, even though few would remember him today. One of the "Battle1 legends".
- Grytolle, Vegito and myself: obviously, this is based on our performance in JJ2WC2 in 2005. I don't think any other team has ever put so much effort into preparing for a tournament as us. We really got *a lot* better in a relatively short amount of time, and finally put our clan on the map. I know it may sound arrogant that I included myself here, but I honestly don't think I contributed any less to our victories than my teammates.
- Superjazz/Vivando: in the time to come after JJ2WC2, the new clan 8D quickly rose to become CC's newest rival. Although I have respect for Yasco's and Squirrel's teamplay, I must say that Vivando was their strongest player overall. He's always been a dangerous and worthy opponent in my experience.

I'm not sure who else should be on this list, so I'm leaving #9 and #10 open for now. I'll give it some more thought. Some candidates are Maverick, Skull, Snooze, Salamander, Urbs (because he wants it so much ;)), Tidus, Nazgul, FawFuL or perhaps Yasco.

Thing is, these days skill matters about 1/3 as much as lag advantage.
Dunno exactly what it is, but lag has become several times as big a factor as it used to be.
Also, I'm not talking about 3hks or anything like that, but rather the all-round lag of opponents being almost impossible to hit (Sliver etc) or opponents hitting you much easier than you hit them.
Sometimes capturing flags is tenuous (it takes one whole second or longer before you actually take them) making close recaptures hard on one side.

And yes, FS is certainly correct.

When you first got the game and weren't as good as you are now, Gry ;)

Guys, you shouldn't be harping on people about their lists. Most of the good players scored multiple wins against each other in the past and present, so it's always debatable in which order they should be listed. And besides, just because someone doesn't put you in their list, it doesn't mean they think you suck, they might just have forgotten or not played you recently :)

Bob and iced (and a few others who played with them) are listed a lot in this thread, and for good reason. But I don't think anyone has posted yet the exact reason WHY they were able to dominate back then. I wasn't such an active player myself, back then (never was, really) but I did play with them sometimes and got to learn what exactly made them so much better than everyone else at the time.

It basically boils down to this: back in the very early days of JJ2, during 1998 and 1999, there really wasn't much organization in team games. People did play CTF, but no one really thought about tactics, controlling the map, and communicating this information between teammates. It was really all up to individual skill. Because of this, there were people who could truly dominate in 1vs1, and if they played today they'd still be fairly good in a duel, but in a team game they would lose.

What these newcomers did is they started to communicate vital information in "CTF" codes. As far as I know, they were the ones who started the custom of saying "3" to mean you have 3 health, and so on. The only ones I really remember being used were "1" "2" "3" and "rdy" which eventually got shortened to "r". A little while later spotty added "CAR" for when the carrot spawned, now shortened to "c". There was also "sefjhsdfkhsdfkjsdh" (or any variation of that) which was actually taken seriously as a code, and it meant "I have the flag and I am about to die!!!". Saying this in other circumstances was bad form. In other words, a random string of gibberish was given a specific meaning. Bob especially used this one a lot. Anyway, these codes are very simple compared to what they have evolved into, but because only a few players were using them, they were able to destroy everyone else (who largely stuck with the old, low-communication style of play). This kind of play also encouraged thinking about more advanced tactics.

One thing to note is that back then teamchat worked based on even/odd player numbers, rather than actual team. This meant that 2vs2 was the ideal format, though 3vs3 wasn't impossible to set up. Also, a LOT of players thought that red simply didn't get teamchat at all. This was false (it worked fine, but it didn't show brackets), and it meant that if you were on red and used teamchat, your opponent might not even think it was possible! Furthermore, a lot of people didn't know about the even/odd thing (knowing about, and thus being able to set up working teamchat, was a major advantage).

A fun note: during this era, there was a clan known as "LOL" or the "LOL clan". I was a member of it (as "TheBoX LOL"), and so were many of the other top players of that time. We had a gimmick where we would act like complete morons in public games, challenge prominent good players to matches, and then wipe the floor with them thanks to our superior communications skills. However, because we were pretending to be idiots, we couldn't exactly set up games with all our players on even or odd numbers. Therefore, all our chat had to be public, and so LOL codes were created.

LOL codes were fairly simple. First you'd type some gibberish, like safjkghsdfgjkdgh. Then, you'd make the last letter actually mean something. q, w and e stood for 1, 2 and 3. Thus djghsdjkfgsdq meant you were at 1 health. If the last letter was r, that meant you were ready at the enemy base. c stood for carrot (I remember spoy would sometimes type sdfjksdhfdkjhCAR, totally defeating the purpose). I forget what we used to show the enemy flag holder's health... I think it might have been a s d (being underneath q w e). Anyway, no one really seemed to be able to crack this code, and it had the bonus effect of making the LOL clan seem completely insane. This just added to the confusion when everyone lost to them.

Even after LOL disbanded, LOL codes remained useful as a way of teamchatting, for those in the know. I recall at least one JDC OvC event where former LOL members used them to their advantage (a lot of members of the clan were also officials at the time, and I believe all of the admins were).

TLDR: These players are my top players because they basically changed the way JJ2 was played, for me and for pretty much everyone else after them.

Check how the situation was around 2004, and see how these kind of topics were old even back then:)

You can also see how some of the names mentioned today, were already mentiond quite often back then, such continuity must surely point to quality.

Note also, how the age in question was clearly pre-Vegito and also note what sort of level of dominance Bobby_aka_Dizzy had in the eyes of his fellow competitors and him being already pretty inactive by that time.

Stuff about how CTF codes started

Didn't know that. Not that I would anyway.

Stuff about LOL codes

Wow, absolutely stupefyingly genius.

And why am I not in anyone's list just for trying hard? I've pretty much challenged almost all those people mentioned above to a duel and dueled probably about half of them. And don't tell me it's because I suck at actually playing (which I do for those who don't know).

Plus I'm not really serious about what I just said there.

[GpW]Urbs
Jan 15, 2011, 02:23 AM
Sean I love your style.

You remind me of me. If you would look at the beginning of this topic, you'd see me asking myself the very same thing and Chiyu was good enough to put me in his list just because I was begging to be in one of the lists:)

So IMO sean is most definitely top 10 atm. He has to work on his game for a bit if he wants to make it in the overall top 10 list:)

Happy?

EDIT: I agree LOL codes are pure genius. As are codes themselves (even without the LOL:)). Its amazing how they've taken the game to the next level. And how every "n00b" today uses them.

Toni
Jan 15, 2011, 04:12 AM
There is one n00b in this community. Use "noob" instead of "n00b" :p.

It's spelled with a small c

Also for names it's needed Capital Letter , you really know just six english words !

Sean
Jan 16, 2011, 02:03 AM
Funny thing is you only need to know 6 Cantonese words to get around Hong Kong too:

Ngo mm zi lei gong me (BTW I am actually half-Chinese if you want to test the veracity of this post)

Basically it means: "I don't know what you're talking about"

EDIT: Here it is for no reason in Mandarin: Wo bu zhi dao ni shuo shen me

Not to be picky, but it's not a real name (well... to a point), just a nickname. Nicknames go by their own rules.

And ironically, there's no reason to spell 'capital letter' with capital letters.

Sean

Correction: Malaysia. And that's probably not really a good idea, people tend to get pissed when that happens. And you know nobody wants to piss off the Muslims.

WHY AM I NOT MENTIONED MORE OFTEN? URBS you are right! Every list should have me in it! Afterall I'm everyones favourite player!!!

Sucer
Jan 25, 2011, 01:55 AM
My current list:

1.Sucer (such an awesome player. Magnificent skill. Can kill everyone if he has all the PU's and others have only blaster)
2. Chaoslord (I wish he still played. Awesome talent. A bit like JJB, but better)
3.SJ (Creative and fun jj2 play. Never gets on anyone's nerves!)
4.Emperor (Manages to create drama whereever he goes. Beneath the ironfisted hardboiled appearance, he is really nice and also creative)
5. Urbs (a cool guy and nice to me:D)
6. Kenny (the best jj2 player atm imo)
7. AJazzRAD (Legendary and awesome)
8. Enigma (Civilized and well mannered.)
9. Dizzy (He plays a unique and interesting style. It's always a pleasure to play with him.)
10. Maverick, Grytolle and Veg (These guys are somewhat special:D All in their own way.)

This is too hard. I think jj2 is full of nice people:) (with some less nice people mixed in)

[GpW]Urbs

Jan 31, 2011, 06:12 PM
I should update my list now since it's been a year already.
1) Vegito - pwn
2) Kenny/FawFul - their achievements speak for themselves, they faced each other in both the duel tourney and the JJ2WC finals
3) Grytolle - awesome team player
4) Superjazz - an excellent player overall
5) Maverick - wouldn't need long to get out of his rustyness and pwn you all
6) JJB - got quite good in no time
7) Warrior - isn't in such a good shape anymore, can't put him any higher
Hard to pick 8-10, so Top 7 it is.
