View Full Version : JCS Awards 2009 [Voting Thread]

Dec 24, 2009, 12:42 AM
Update: The winners (http://www.jazz2online.com/jcf/showpost.php?p=454463&postcount=36) have been announced!
This continues from the <a href="http://www.jazz2online.com/jcf/showthread.php?t=18542">nominations thread</a>.
There are eight categories. You are allowed to vote for one item in each category. Therefore, you have a total of eight votes. However, you may vote in fewer categories if you wish. You can even vote for just one thing. When voting, please state which category each of your votes is in so it's 100% clear. Also, if you wind up voting more than once in the same category, I will take your most recent vote as the official one. Try not to vote for yourself.
Below are the nominations. It is suggested that you vote for the items listed below, but it is not required that you do. However, if you vote for something not on the list below, keep in mind it will have a very low chance of winning.
There are three ways to vote: the first is to simply post in this thread. The second is to post in this thread and delete the post, and then at the end a mod will undelete it to reveal what you voted for. If you do this, your vote will be anonymous (even I can't read it). However, make sure you put in the delete message that you voted. The third way is to PM me with your votes. When it comes time to count, I will post your votes in this thread (took keep things fair). I will not read your message until that time, so make sure you make it clear in the title.
And now for the nominees. Also, could someone close the nominations thread so it doesn't get bumped over this one?

Runner Up: EvilMike (http://www.jazz2online.com/jcf/../downloads/index.php?userID=17) (While devres ep5 was probably the greatest sp pack ever made, I feel snz deserves this award more due to the sheer amount of creativity and hard work that has gone into his recent levels, some being scrapped and/or unfinished. Don't get me wrong, EM also has a lot of nice ideas, but I just felt snz went that one step further with what I've seen so far, and has inspired me greatly.)
Most Improved JCSer of 2009

The runner up votes don't count, just I'd like to state what my second choice would be should I not vote for my main choice.

Wouldnt consider that as "rage" but oh well, deleted the post because I dont think anyone really cares anyway.. Ill edit my votes here later tonight. Can that tag be removed? :/
Also, why is this called JDC Awards?

Dec 24, 2009, 02:21 AM
(Basically you should download Snooze's stuff before tonight because after that he will delete everything because of the way he's been mistreated all these years, so I suppose if you want to check out his stuff to consider voting for it you should do so as soon as possible)

I'm gonna have to skip out on voting for best multiplayer maps because I can't play multiplayer anymore, so I can't truly say which map is the best to play online.
I vote for EvilMike's episode for the best single player pack because the amount of dedication put into his single player pack series has paid off with sheer awesomeness.
I vote Gus' Casualty Mines as the best tileset because the ground tiles in Casualty Mines is simply amazingly styled yet simple and effective to use. I do think my own set has high quality but that's also all it has, I focused too much on the visual representation of the tileset and too little on the functionality.
I vote for EvilMike for the best JCS'er, even if it’s a little biased playing only single player levels I happen to know how insanely much work and creativity is required for a single player pack.

Best Battle Level
Rainforest Revelry
Best Other MP Level
Greed
Both of these two above were the ones I got the most fun out of. I'll admit I haven't played every nomination.
Best Tileset
Casualty Mines
Though there were a lot of good choices, including two LMAT releases and a good (albeit limited) tileset by moonblaze.
Best JCSer
Snooze
He was really prolific this year, and the levels were good quality too.
Most Improved
Gus
Fawful is a close runner up, but Gus this year went from being a decent tileset maker to one of the best, and I think that means he deserves a vote. A lot of his tilesets lately have been of a more experimental flavour, but they are still interesting.

I haven't received any votes for a while, so I've decided that voting will end on Sunday, Jan 10. On that day I'll ask someone to undelete the hidden posts in that thread, and I'll also post all of the Private Messages I got (which are still unread, in case anyone cares). After that (maybe on the 11th or 12th depending on the time I have, since I want to include some comments and maybe screenshots), I'll tally up the votes and make a post in this thread, along with a newspost on J2O. I don't think there's any need to start a new thread.
So that leaves one week. Due to all of the anonymous votes, it's impossible to say what's going to win! If you would like to vote, I encourage you to do so soon, either in this thread or by PMing me. Even if you only want to vote on one thing, that's enough to make a difference!
EvilMike
Jan 9, 2010, 05:52 PM
Here are the anonymous votes that were sent via PM. I'm copying and pasting directly from the messages, including the subject line.
I'm now going to ask for a mod/admin to undelete everything in this thread. Once that is done, it will be time to officially count the votes.
Since I've now posted the anonymous votes, no more votes will be accepted.

I'm not clear on something, so before I hit the undelete button: do you want to keep the votes in deleted posts completely anonymous (in which case myself or another mod/admin can aggregrate them and post the results without saying who voted for what or undeleting the original posts), or was the intention just to allow voting without influencing anyone (in which case since voting's over I'll undelete them)?

Well I want to thank people for letting me win the best mp pack, that was certainly deserved. hopefully people play those levels because im personally not going to make any more levels for mp, its waste of time when people overhype stuff and then not vote for it (LG for example)
its no wonder how some people hid their friend/ and self votes. they should have stayed hidden, now i cant help but feel kind of eh.. cant explain.
Im however not dissapointed with the result, and really, thanks to anyone who voted New Ages IV. :)

I'll make an exception, I just didn't want to get a flood of last minute stuff while I was in the middle of counting (which I'm probably going to do tonight).

Here are the winners for 2009, with the top 3 in each category. There were a few ties, but there's nothing wrong with that. In some categories, there are fewer than 3 winners: this is because for some things, there were only votes for one or two items. I have also decided to not give any awards to things which only got one vote, because otherwise we'd be seeing a lot more bronze medals. Two categories DID have four winners, because there was a tie for third place which had more than one vote for each.

Best Level of 2009: Battle

http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_silver_1.png The Curse (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/5618/the-curse/) by Snooze (3 votes)
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_bronze_2.png Agony Void (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/5360/agony-void/) by P4ul (2 votes)
Not much surprise here. Rainforest Revelry is one of the better looking battle levels of 2009, and one of the most fun. I remember having a lot of fun with this in JDC, particularly.
Best Level of 2009: CTF
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_gold_3.png Golem Landscapes (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/5699/golem-landscapes/) by FireSworD (9 votes)

http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_silver_1.png Mt. Helens (CTF) (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/5384/mt-helens/) by Superjazz (2 votes)
Another clear winner here. FireSword has shown that even in 2009, he's still the among the best at making CTF levels. Nothing else even came close to Golem Landscapes in the voting.
Best Level of 2009: Other Multiplayer
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_gold_3.png Karot Shire (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/5599/karrot-shire-10-unfinished/) by Falcury and Wadledee (7 votes)
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_silver_1.png Mt. Helens (DOM) (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/5384/mt-helens/) by Superjazz (5 votes)
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_bronze_2.png Arctic Citadel (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/5737/memories-3-imagination/) by Hitch (2 votes)
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_bronze_2.png Greed (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/5737/memories-3-imagination/) by Hitch (2 votes)
This one was a bit closer. Karot Shire won, and it's easy to see why: it's not very often that a level like that comes along, creating a sort of JJ2 RPG. The fact that it requires a utility makes it a bit harder to play, but it's very interesting nonetheless. Mt Helens came in close second, and is a good choice for those who prefer more traditional JJ2 gameplay. I'd also like to congratulate hitch for managing to tie for third place... with himself. You don't see that happen very often.
Best Multiplayer Pack of 2009
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_gold_3.png New Ages IV - THE RAIN (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/5716/new-ages-iv-the-rain/) by Snooze (9 votes)
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_silver_1.png Memories 3: Imagination (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/5737/memories-3-imagination/) by Hitch (2 votes)
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_silver_1.png Planetary (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/5697/planetary/) by Fawful (2 votes)
Again, a clear winner: New Ages IV won by a landslide. Of all of the New Ages packs, IV is arguably the best one. It's a shame that I, II and III are no longer available on J2O.
Best Singleplayer Release of 2009
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_gold_3.png Episode Five: The Fortress of Ruin (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/5550/episode-five-the-fortress-of-ruin/) by EvilMike (15 votes)
This was literally the only thing that got votes. I guess its not surprising - I put a ton of work into ep5 and it paid off (although I'm going to admit that I did make it too hard). Overall 2009 was actually a pretty dry year for single player. There were releases, but mot most of them weren't too good. I think you guys should release more SP stuff. So much promising work never sees the light of day.
Best Tileset of 2009
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_gold_3.png Casualty Mines, venue of Bloody Valentine (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/5547/casualty-mines-venue-of-bloody-valentine/) by Gus (11 votes)
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_silver_1.png Aftermath (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/5708/aftermath/) by LMAT (5 votes)
There were a surprising number of good tilesets in 2009, but two really stood out above the rest. Casualty mines ultimately won, and it's easy to see why. This tileset is also the main reason why Gus got so many votes as "most improved".
Best JCSer of 2009
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_gold_3.png EvilMike (http://www.jazz2online.com/user/17/evilmike/downloads/) (9 votes)

http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_bronze_2.png Gus (http://www.jazz2online.com//user/4964/gus/downloads) (2 votes)
The main winners here were me and snooze. Personally, I'm a bit surprised that I won, considering that I only released one thing this year! Maybe it's finally time to go back to making MP levels...
Most Improved JCSer of 2009
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_gold_3.png Dodges (http://www.jazz2online.com/user/10555/dodges/downloads/) (6 votes)
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_gold_3.png Gus (http://www.jazz2online.com/user/4964/gus/downloads/) (6 votes)
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_bronze_2.png Fawful (http://www.jazz2online.com/user/7285/fawful/downloads/) (3 votes)
And here we have our only tie for first place. On one hand we have Gus, whose tileset making abilities exploded in 2009. He's shown not only a high amount of artistic talent with tilesets like Casualty Mines, but also a more experimental flair with some of his more recent releases. Dodges on the other hand is a relative newcomer, but he's shown that he's both a talented level maker and tileset maker (Traditional Japan comes to mind, though that's technically a 2010 tileset). For those who follow the "post the levels you are working on" thread in the JCS forum, it's obvious that Dodges fully deserves his win here, just as much as Gus does.

Well, that's all for 2009. For a game that came out in 1998, it's impressive that J2O still has good stuff being uploaded. Let's hope 2010 is the same.
A J2O news post featuring the winners will be made later on in this week. (I don't feel like doing it right now, because this post is a lot of work as it is.) If another admin wants to do it for me, go right ahead.

That went well. Once again I am surprised I even won a category, much less by a landslide. It goes to show that using original ideas with a very versatile level size and certain design choices can get you far. I don't recommend making gimmicky levels like Enter the Chaos in the future though. I expected fierce competition from Sanguis and at least one of Faw's levels, but that didn't happen. I'm confident Golem Landscapes is an ideal 2vs2-4vs4 level, and suitable for 1on1 as well. Sanguis and a few of Faw's are highly recommended for larger games.
Oh, and apology to Hitch as I wasn't able to play many of his levels in memories 3. This year I'll be sure to play everything you release.

I could've had a chance this year, although I guess I simply didn't really upload anything major due to not having the time. Hopefully I'll somehow use my free time so I can release something bigger this year so I'd have a chance at being a candidate for 2010's JCS Awards. Anyway, congratulations to everyone who won!

I could upload the New Ages I-III as a pack to j2o someday as N/A. I was planning to do that when i made the IV :P
Anyway, congrats to all who won something :)

Newsposted.
Congratulations to EM! About time you <a href="http://www.jazz2online.com/wiki/?JCS_Awards#2005">finally got the title</a>, dare I say ;) And yes, more MP levels would be cool (especially with FS and others moving back from MP levels - not without reason though, I suppose...)
If there's one thing that I didn't like about the awards this year, is that all the winners have won by more or less a landslide. In 2010 I'd like to have some more fierce competition :(
Maybe this year is when I get my JCSing mojo back for good?? Hell knows. Until then, I have other levels for other games to finish (I do wish that sometime there would be enough people interested in JJ1 level design to warrant J1E awards!)
Also.. maybe this is the year when we JCSers finally move to TSF? It's been long overdue, really.

TSF is definately better for designing sp levels due to the fact that you can use 4x more tiles, and there is more memory, meaning that you can save in quite big levels..

Like I posted in the J2O newspost already:
Hopefully 2010 will be my year. I only released a few levels in 2009, but I made more levels for Impressions A which I will definitely release in 2010.

Holy crap, we won an award! This is very inspiring, especially considering KS wasn't even properly finished (which shall of course change - if we aren't sidetracked by another project. We remain ambitious ;)).
A big thanks to everyone who voted for us! And congratulations to all winners and nominees.
