you can use some programms like BeeThink IP Blocker (--> google) too
but i think there was a direct Block in the network connection probertis of windows but atm I can't find it

I think that's a bit harsh and kind of extreme for somebody who causes some problems on a bunny game. Ban his IP. If he continues (which we know he will), proceed to send him a fair warning saying if such activity does not halt, then he will be reported to his ISP. THEN, you should report him. Don't be a total dick about it.

@Vegito: JJu is an outdated program written by me, but I still use it, but the most players think its illegal so when you want to have it legally download the update only and add your JJ2 versions manually

When we (The List Server Team) had an IP Ban feature in use, we had the community screaming on about power abuse and how no one should be banned from the list server. Then now when one stupid russian abuses it, people demand he gets banned and then complain that its not done.

I mean come on people, make your mind up, you either want an Admin in control, or you want the list server network to remain open.

Part of me just wants to ban him, because its clear he is an idiot who just needs to get a life, but at the same time, I'd have the J2o/JJ2 'elites' shouting at me for power abusing and threatening to remove support for the list server.

So its a no-win situation for me, someones always going to complain. However if it continues we may have to call people togeather and get some framework on IP banning back online, and also I'd have to install the IP filter on Digiex again (I removed it after the whole Orbitz thing ended).

My only threat to this russian idiot is, you have had your fun, but if you keep pushing people they will push for your ban more, and it will just be an entire range ban on your ISP so there won't be a way around, so stop pushing your luck. Orbitz did this a few years ago, and he was easily stopped, so it can be done.

The way I see it, he's abusing a service provided by Nimrod, so it's perfectly fine for Nimrod to take away his privilege (since that's what it is) to use it. If the only way to do that is by a complete IP ban, so be it. I can see where the reservations to such actions come from, and I suppose they could be addressed by coming up with some sort of formal process of reaching a verdict about banning or not, but I don't think the whole list server enterprise is big enough to warrant such an institution.

I don't know whether it's possible, but some sort of server spam prevention (like max 3 servers per IP or something) would be nice to avoid such problems in the future, perhaps?

Well, a ban would stop most of the problems. Him joining a server can be prevented by simply blocking his IP firewall wise. Not only that, there's gonna be a jj2+ update that should stop most of the problems he exploited.

I tend to be more in favour of Stijn idea with regards to blocking the number of games hosted per IP, perhaps even as low as one or two, then special things like the Zeal Server can be let off that requirement (as it serves a purpose).

However, that will require either a network wrapper around the Epic List Server that monitors connections to the listing port, and only allows one or two concurrent per IP. Or for BlurredD or another programmer from the community working on attaching the feature to the Epic's List server tool. Either of those are good, but are time consuming. I couldn't work on them myself until University finishes (in a couple of months) however I would have nothing against another community members involvement in getting that done (and I'm sure the community would be thankful to that person).

With Stijn's idea, the list server can remain open to all, and that would be my preferable method of operation. Like he commented, its too small to have long winded processes to work on banning people and to be honest, the problem of abuse only seems to come along once every few years, the rest of the time the community respects the list server network and it gets good productive use.

You would be surprised at what network administrators can do in regards to managing networks. Nimrod already mentioned what he would have to do to impose a server limit.

Artem is an unhappy kid his parents get divorced he's mother have other men (and he life with they) but if he can't change his customs, behaviour etc. it's good idea to block him on list of servers (as host and as client) but he of course can still hack servers by e.g. ask someone who like him for an IP. The best way is download firewall and block his IP prefix 94.(I don't remember the rest).*.* , in my firewall it is Ip range 94.181.1.1:94.181.255.255 and to someone who doesn't know ip *.*.*.257 doesn't exist :P

the server spamming is being done by using ports above the 10052-10058 range. judging from the list, I think the servers go as high as port 10130.

Why don't we just limit the list servers to ports 10052-10062?

only one game can be listed using one port. to list other servers on one computer, you have to use another port. This is the reason Zeal hosts a Server on 10052, but has to host his dual servers on ports 10057 and 10058.

The 10052-10058 range is universal for every JJ2 player, so that's why I suggest blocking anything other than that range, as port 10130 is getting ridiculous.

Er... Reset server but do a clean setup of all configuration files.

You cannot be banned from your own Server. You are the server. You provide services to clients that connect TO YOU.

Also...

What's all of this bullocks about an octet with a value of higher than 255?

One ".x." is assigned in binary as an 8 bit piece of information, 0's and 1's.

The lowest value is 0, the highest is 255, period. If you want to ban this guy, do a range ban on his IP for the last 2 values. So Number.Number.*.*

Also, no idea why you can't fight back. You know he has certain port ranges open, start off with a SYN method to initialize a session with him, and read up on the possibilities from there. (But if your going to "fire back", for the love of god, learn what an IP packet and how to manipulate IP headers).

I tend to be more in favour of Stijn idea with regards to blocking the number of games hosted per IP, perhaps even as low as one or two, then special things like the Zeal Server can be let off that requirement (as it serves a purpose).

that's where you email nimrod and work out a deal. I don't see any the administrators having an issue over people setting up dedicated servers, But it would help your case on expanding if you get a server started first.
