I used to Wine jj2 without problems on Ubuntu. I'm not very knowledgeable on that subject, but it should work just fine.

You don't have to stick with Windows if you just want to play JJ2.

Unfortunately for me and many others, new games do attend to have some problems running under UNIX (or better, ehh, let's say it doesn't work). :p

Unmodified JJ2, regardless of version, should run fine on pretty much any configuration of Wine.

If you use JJ2+, then it will either work perfectly or it will have really weird problems or it will not work at all. For the "really weird problems" bit, try setting your Wine sound driver to ALSA, starting XMPlay (http://un4seen.com/xmplay.html) in Wine and playing a song (put it on repeat), then set the sound driver to OSS, then starting JJ2 - you'll get no sound but if you don't do this then it just crashes every time. Also trying to use the plus injector during a single player game will make gravity disappear.

No, seriously. Also I think it runs perfect on really old Wine versions (1.1 or so), so I guess you could try that.

What is your OS? We need to know that before we can help you.

Otherwise, with most operating systems, There are two ways to run Jazz on your computer.

The easiest way is to setup WINE on your computer (Dosbox for Jazz1). In Ubuntu, both are availible in the software store.

Another option, if you have the software, is a virtual machine (Think of a OS inside a OS). VirtualBox (http://www.virtualbox.org/) is a free virtual machine emulator that I am just trying out.

Note that using a virtual machine is a very inefficient workaround, so only do it if you can't get Wine to work.

Hey, RedPC!

I'll tell you in a secret, this is the ultimate button of "Edit":

I heard that thanks to this powerful thing you can magically change content of your post or add some new sentences without posting again! Or maybe it's just a legend... Only the bravest people who press it will find the true meaning of it.

When using JJ2+ under Linux, MacOS, or any non-Windows operat<b>ing</b> system, the best way to do it is definitely with a virtual machine. JJ2+ under WINE causes untold misery (as described by others). I'd advise getting a CD image of XP (can be legally gotten in 30-day trial form from Microsoft's website) and making a virtual machine with it. Grant the VM around 700 MB of RAM, and JJ2+ will run just fine in it.

Huh, this is just weird advice. Installing VM is a lot of work, and will require some computer knowledge. Installing WINE in Ubuntu is just a few clicks away. JJ2+ works fine in WINE for most, AFAIK. Step one should be to check if it works with WINE (which, for the opening poster, it apparently doesn't), installing a VM should only be step two.

RedComputer: what happens when you try to start Jazz2+ in WINE?

I thinked it's well known that Jazz2 works with wine!, my JJ2-Server was running a year (2009) with debian+fluxbox+wine (i think it was the wine-version 0.9.3).

The bad thing at wine is, createremotethread (a function from ntdll) do not work there, so you have to plusfie JJ2, directly loading the dll with plus.exe do not work!

If JJ2 is stopping working on linux you should copy your regedit options for JJ2 from a windows system, it always crashed in fullscreen mode on my server.

As a server its not the best in my oppinion, the most time it looked like my Server had big problems with uploading the level to clients, as client it should work (never played a lot as client)

In Wine 1.3.x JJ2+ works very well now. No need to use bizarre "tricks," just use a sound driver other than ALSA (including no sound driver).

I have some experience with Ubuntu Linux and JJ2 for both server and client.
In my installation of wine I don't changed anysettings!
Just run "wine regedit" and paste my jj2.reg from my windoze (uhhh).
If you want I can try to fix it by VNC if you want.
Try to copy here terminal output when you run jj2 directly from command
wine /home/yourhome/.wine/etc
