View Full Version : Worms!

I know there's several of us in the community who play one variant or another of Worms, but I can never remember who has which variant. So, here's a poll to solve that.

I'm also curious what people think of the latest instalment, Worms Reloaded. Is it a worthy successor to the series, or have they ruined it forever? Go forth and word-procreate upon this ‘forum’ upon which men from the ‘internet’ may ‘talk’ to one another.

Despite a lot of its bugs and the steam forums flooded with moaning. I think reloaded is still an ok game. Many people dislike the new rope in W:R. I don't mind the new rope. Had some hours of fun on it. The campaign was a bit annoying how accurate the worms were. Once they brought out that grenade you knew it was over. Still W:R is a lot of fun, so its a good enough game for me. I've loved every worms game, and I didn't mind the 3d ones that much, but prefer 2d a lot better.

Team 17 claim to support W:R and keep giving it patches, they have patched some bugs, but there are a lot. The UI is a bit annoying too but it wouldn't really spoil the game. There needs to be worms placement before the game starts as well. W:A is still my favorite of them all. Perhaps when W:R gets more additional stuff such as a custom soundbank editor etc I would favor W:R.

Sorry, was confused by Wikipedia using the PS2 box art for it (thought it was PS2 only). Option added.

I've played the new one on steam and it's fairly decent. I don't mind that it has fewer weapons than previous games, since the ones removed weren't very useful anyway. The rope is less powerful too, but I was never into that style of gameplay so I don't mind. The best thing about the new game is that it works on windows 7 (the older games required you to kill explorer.exe or do some other crazy workaround, and it isn't really worth bothering).

Bad points are that it has a very limited online matchmaking system. You need to play it with friends or not at all.

I should also randomly mention this: if you play worms world party, switch to armageddon and get the patches (the last one was fairly recent, 2008 I think). While WWP is a slightly newer game, WA was supported for much longer, and the patches gave it a lot more features than any other version of the game on PC. Playing WWP is sort of like playing a version of JJ2 that doesn't support JJ2+: while you can still have fun, you're missing a lot of stuff.

So, since I only have Worms 3D on the PS2, I assume I can't vote, right? Is the PC-only thing because of online gameplay or something?

I have Worms 2 and Worms Armageddon on the PC. I would get Worms Reloaded but I refuse to pay £17.99 for a download!

Worms... does it really matter? All 2d versions are basically the same (with the only major change being from Worms to Worms 2).

Never played it online. I don't bother with the new version (ok, "game"), since it's basically the same old crap, with even less weapons. They didn't even bother creating any modern graphics to it, the worms themselves look like crap. I heard the game even has some user created maps from older games with no credit... lazy thieves.

Besides, who wants to pay again for a game they've owned for the last 10 years or so?

I've created a madlib from IconGuy's post. Check it out:
[franchise name]... does it really matter? All versions are basically the same (with the only major change being from [entry x] to [entry y]).

Never played it [insert major reason to play it here]. I don't bother with the new version (ok, "game), since it's basically the same old crap, with even less [feature]. They didn't even bother creating any [noun completely unnecessary for the franchise] to it, the [characters] themselves [verb] like [adjective]. I heard [drama]... [verb] [noun].

Besides, who wants to pay again for a game they've owned for the last [number] years or so?

Heres me using it in practice:
Guitar Hero and Rock Band... do they really matter? All versions are basically the same (with the only major change being from Guitar Hero 2 to Rock Band).

Never played it with the plastic instruments, just the controller. I don't bother with the new version (ok, "game), since it's basically the same old crap, with even less songs on disc. They didn't even bother creating any Crysis level graphics to it, the Note Track themselves look like suck. I heard Bobby Kotick keeps trying to spam the market with different GH iterations while Harmonix aren't so clean themselves with stuff like Lego Rock Band... Greedy louts.

Besides, who wants to pay again for a game they've owned for the last 5 years or so?

Use it to make a negative post for any video game franchise! Its broad and off base enough you can twist to work for ANY THING! Even lie if you have to! Fun for the whole family.

Sure, lack of originality and decay of quality of franchises is nothing new, and Guitar Hero is a good example.

I'm just saying that Worms (2d) is quite an extreme (but, yes, probably not singular) case.

Playing online a major reason to play Worms? Maybe today, but certainly not back when I had it. Hardly anyone I knew had proper internet connection.

I remember playing WWP on a friend's computer, though I think that was only a demo. Worms 3D is one of my best games anyway though. Worms rules!

Jazz Jackrabbit, JJ2, hh, tsf, cc... does it really matter? All versions are basically the same (with the only major change being 1.24).

Never played it with user made levels. I don't bother with the new version (ok, "game), since it's basically the same old crap, with even less levels. They didn't even bother creating any 3d graphics to it, the textured backgrounds themselves look like suck. I heard Dean Dodrill hates the game and all the community surrounding it and thus Jazz3 will never see the light of day... dumb devs.

Besides, who wants to pay again for a game they've owned for the last 10 years or so?

Just tried the demo of Worms Reloaded on PC (the one game I do not have), and it's quite good. I definitely need to get the full version when finances allow.

I played Worms 2 at a friend's house long ago and really enjoyed the local multiplayer. Going on a turnbased war on a single PC worked very well and gave many laughs as a result. We also played JJ2 splitscreen since he wasn't allowed to use that dial-up connection all the time.

Later on I rented Armageddon from our local library and had hours of fun with it, then I incidently found the 'Worms Battle Pack', supposely distributed by Ubisoft, laying around at an Intertoys store. It contained Worms 2, Armageddon, and World Party. Now, I'm still playing some Armageddon or World Party from time to time.

Yes.

Oh, and on topic: I have a good bunch of them. They are mostly fine games, the 2D ones always better than the 3D ones. I still think it peaked at W:A/WWP, but releasing both split the fanbase. W:R still has promise because it is getting patches directly from Team 17, but everyone who loved the rope in W:A/WWP is going to be disappointed.

Damn kids.

I've played Worms (1), and owned Worms 2, Armageddon, Open Warfare 2, and Reloaded. I've just really enjoyed the series over the years. Reloaded is a pretty good game and for the most part I like that too. I'm not too fond of the ninja ropes being nerfed, and the grenades... well, I wish the AI wasn't so freaking precise with them. I mean if they pull out a grenade you ARE taking damage.

I once had my worm literally touching an enemy worm, who happened to have five health left. Another enemy worm threw a cluster bomb that hurt my worm but left the enemy worm unharmed. Seriously?

But aside from that it's a good game. Worms is a great friends game because it'll get you all riled-up more than your basic FPS game. It just becomes personal. :-) The funny thing is that I've kept my same worm names since back in 1997 when I first played the game. Big D. has always been my heavy hitter. I don't know what I'd do without him. (probably lose more often?)

Yeah that's one of the problems on the new worms reloaded. The missions for me pretty addictive. I found the mission where you fight upon the team17 logo pretty hard. I remember I dug through the logo walls to the weapon crate, used a concrete donkey. Then placed a girder under the logo and waited for the AI to pretty much make some dumb moves and kill itself.

I'm glad team17 have been fixing bugs, I'm really looking forward to a sound bank editor in the near future. One of the things I really dislike in online play is chatting. you have to pretty much have a giant box fill your whole screen just to chat. The only notification you get that someone has spoken is an old school telephone in the right hand corner pop up. I hope they improve on the chat feature. Either way i'm still enjoying worms reloaded.

I'm also a bit annoyed it didn't use cloud. Since I kinda reformatted my HDD. The missions are kind of annoying to replay. :D

That's awesome, I've kept my worms names exactly the same since... I first played the original worms! Fluffy is the most likely to make himself part of the explosion, whereas Ginger will run and hide and throw things all the way across the map before she'll let herself die.

Wind in Worms is really annoying thing...
But if ye know how to use it, it may be very helpful.

I like shot to west when strong wind goes to east...
It's very good when enemy worm hiding behind wall...
