View Full Version : Sean's Crappy Map Making Contest

Sean

Contrary to popular opinion, the more contests at the same time, the better! A map making contest from Sean (of no fame, really)! Everyone is allowed to submit, there will be ONE prize, and all you get out of this contest is satisfaction! So, get your map-making muscles flexed and start building! Here are the rules:

1. Your entry must be in by November 6th (that's right, make it fast!)
2. Your entry must be symmetrical.
3. It must be playable in CTF.
4. There must be 2 power-ups that deal 2 damage, no more, no less (other power-ups that still do 1 damage or no damage at all are allowed)
5. Seekers are not allowed!
6. There must not be a password in the level.
7. Rules 8 and 9 do not apply.
8. No blaster!
9. No MP Start!
10. When you post, brag about yourself (semi-serious - I'd like to know about your previous experience)

That's it, and this pretty much makes for a crappy map. So make the best crappy map you can, and win A 3D RENDERING OF A LANDSCAPE OF YOUR CHOICE! (sounds attractive? You bet it is! My previous experience: http://h3llb0yn3cr0.deviantart.com)

About three weeks is a bit big timelimit for a small map like that... How about just one week?

About three weeks is a bit big timelimit for a small map like that... How about just one week?I wish I was able to make CTF maps in 3 weeks! :p

Jgke
Oct 12, 2010, 12:03 PM
And does the PU limit mean PU's on one side of the level or the whole level?

Sean
Oct 12, 2010, 06:50 PM
What does symmetrical mean? :P

Jgke
Oct 12, 2010, 09:25 PM
I didn't say about symmetrical, I said about PU limit. Can there be four PU's on the whole level, with two on each base's side?

Sean
Oct 13, 2010, 02:03 AM
Number and location of PU's is up to you (except for those stated in rule 4, ofc :-D) There isn't a limit to the location of the PU's, so crack away!

If I still don't get the jist of your message, feel free to curse me :-P

Obi1mcd
Oct 13, 2010, 02:39 AM
What he's asking is wether rule 4 says two PUs for the whole level, or two PUs per symmetrical side.

Jgke
Oct 13, 2010, 05:19 AM
And, does the no seekers rule mean PU seekers or any seekers?

Sean
Oct 13, 2010, 05:47 AM
Jake: No seekers at all. Sucks, right? :D
Ob: Two "2 damage PU's" for the whole level. Others are of choice.

someone should enter this contest with a test level

I'll see if I can finish up that one level I wanted to make for SJ's contest but didn't.

Sean
Oct 13, 2010, 06:47 AM
...test level?

Jgke
Oct 13, 2010, 07:53 AM
Modern test levels are played in CTF mode.

Dermo

I was considering a team test level for this. Thank you for ruining it.

Sean
Oct 13, 2010, 06:08 PM
...but, I mean, TEST LEVEL?

...I see how that could work then. It would be a race of sorts.

This contest seems to amount to "make a normal CTF level with these somewhat arbitrary rules, and win nothing." This would be more interesting if you were asking for something unique, or were offering some kind of award (even a small one). And awards can take a lot of forms - for example, a recent contest guaranteed that the winners would have their map in a prominent tournament, and minmay's somewhat odd contest seems to be rewarding a banner image or something.

I mean, I happen to have a CTF level in the works which almost fits under these rules, and while I could modify for these purposes, you're not exactly giving me a reason to do that.

Sean
Oct 14, 2010, 12:18 AM
Yes, Mike, yes. That's exactly it.*slow nod of head*

Dermo

Do all layers have to be symmetrical? Or just the level? Let me know and I'll consider joining. Also extend the deadline please. One month is not enough time...

Sean
Oct 14, 2010, 07:22 PM
Just the sprite layer. And about the time... My best map (9 rating) was done in 2 weeks without a clear image of what I want to do. Or maybe you don't work like that...

Sean
Oct 14, 2010, 07:23 PM
Oh and I'm now adding a prize because I have landscape creation skillz (http://h3llb0yn3cr0.deviantart.com) So I suppose that's a new prize :P So I suppose Mike that gives you a reason to join :D

Dermo
Oct 16, 2010, 07:55 PM
Does the line of symmetry necessarily have to go threw the CENTER of the level?

Or can it be offset to the left a tad, as long as the line is still symmetrical? I don't feel like re-aligning this level, sorry =/

slightly ot but I recognise this dA and I don't know why :(

I'm not entirely sure if this is a legal entry, because it's a modification to a level I previously created, but if you'll accept it, here it is. (http://www.mediafire.com/?10z0kr03369limm)

Edit:
I just remembered that bragging is encouraged in this contest. This level is probably one of the coolest I've managed to create. It is one of the most unique forms of CTF I've ever seen, and from a technical aspect, the level is surprisingly complicated for such straight forward gameplay. I personally really want to duel on it for JDC next season at least once.

Sean
Oct 17, 2010, 07:13 PM
Troggy: Two PU's with no use? I dunno :/

Dermo: Symmetrical along the center.

Troglobite
Oct 17, 2010, 09:05 PM
I don't see anything in the rules that say the power ups need to be useful.

Sean
Oct 18, 2010, 06:19 PM
No, but really? An un-useful power-up?

Obi1mcd
Oct 18, 2010, 10:32 PM
He's just bending the rules slightly.

Sean
Oct 19, 2010, 09:08 PM
Still. That's very dumb.

Troglobite
Oct 20, 2010, 08:19 AM
It's your contest. You decide if it's legal, or if I take a penalty during the judging or something. I figured it might not count anyway because I didn't create is specifically for this contest.

Dermo
Oct 20, 2010, 11:36 AM
To be honest, I threw my two powerups in randomly. You weren't specific and if you're going to disqualify us for that, that would be to your own dismay. Surely we followed all rules and guidelines.

Sean
Oct 20, 2010, 06:13 PM
Aah, whatever.
Trog: How about I keep this entry and you can submit another?
Dermo: How about a WIP screenshot?

Troglobite
Oct 20, 2010, 10:47 PM
As much as I'd love to make a better entry, I'm already trying to work on something for the Windmeister contest, and school is keeping me relatively busy, so I don't know if I can even finish that. So unfortunately, this rule stretching level is the best I can offer.

Dermo
Oct 21, 2010, 07:54 PM
Sorry, I was unsure of what WIP meant:

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l30/drmooismyname/ctflevel.jpg

It's a team test level. I just need testers at this point. Unfortunately, I'm not on when most people are... =/

I think I should upload this now.

My first CTF level is done.... xD (but first comment, so I can't put in the URL:-) ) what can I do?

Jgke
Oct 30, 2010, 11:08 AM
What do you mean you can't put in the URL?

Zerg
Oct 30, 2010, 11:10 AM
That was my first comment, and: You are only allowed to post URLs to other sites after you have made 2 posts or more.

Zerg

http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/info.php?levelID=6392#32197 now it should go. Sorry for spamming.

Sean
Oct 31, 2010, 07:25 PM
Aaah, thanks for the entries, you two!

Also, I think I should clarify the symmetrical rule: The masks in layer 4 are to be symmetrical, but eyecandy along layer 4 is not affected by that rule/

Jgke
Oct 31, 2010, 08:06 PM
Nah, I was a little lazy.

minmay
Nov 1, 2010, 07:22 AM
What about events, do they have to be symmetrical? And what about the events that don't support symmetrical placement (start positions, warp targets, a few other things)?

Dermo
Nov 1, 2010, 07:23 AM
I hope not. I put a few fake crates in my level which I'm not even going to bother submitting. Too many errors that I'm too busy to fix at this present time.

@mini: He said the masks. That doesn't include invisible events.

minmay
Nov 1, 2010, 11:20 AM
In a previous post he mentioned that the powerups should be symmetrical, so I'd assume that applies to other events as well, but of course that brings up the asymmetrical events. That's why I'm asking for clarification.

probably only to object only events

Sean
Nov 1, 2010, 05:04 PM
Hm, thanks for bringing that up, min. All events are to be symmetrical as well. Ammo, however, can be replaced (and by that I mean type of weapon, seeks, bncs, etc.) with a different kind from side to side (like GW).

Sean
Nov 3, 2010, 07:04 PM
Two days to go, hurry up ;)

Naw just kidding.

You have until 9:00 pm GMT+8 time to finish this.

Sean
Nov 6, 2010, 03:24 AM
A half-hour left.

Zerg
Nov 6, 2010, 07:19 AM
xD I can't wait :) I can't be just first and second :)) so.. it won't be bad for my first contest place :P

minmay
Nov 6, 2010, 09:31 AM
Hm, thanks for bringing that up, min. All events are to be symmetrical as well. Ammo, however, can be replaced (and by that I mean type of weapon, seeks, bncs, etc.) with a different kind from side to side (like GW).
Again, what about events that are themselves asymmetrical? Warp targets, start positions, copters, wind, float ups, quite a few other things. Does their placement but not behavior need to be symmetrical (thus limiting mask flexibility and negligibly damaging balance, and making copters basically unusable), or does their behavior need to approximate being symmetrical (the usual method used, giving an extremely slight balance throw and copters are again useless)?

and yes i know the contest is over geez

Sean
Nov 6, 2010, 10:36 PM
Heh, extension, I'm a bit lazy anyway. Not enough entries.

Yes, min, behavior must be symmetrical from side to side as well. As I already said, think GW ;)

Obi1mcd
Nov 6, 2010, 10:55 PM
Extension to when?

Sean
Nov 7, 2010, 12:41 AM
Indefinite for now. I can't decide. How long do you need, everyone?

minmay
Nov 7, 2010, 04:37 AM
I don't think a short deadline is the reason people aren't showing interest. As EvilMike said, this is basically just a collection of unrelated rules.

Zerg
Nov 7, 2010, 05:21 AM
I don't need time :D my work is alredy done

Sean
Nov 7, 2010, 04:29 PM
I respect Mike and his opinions, but this is indeed merely a contest with arbitrary rules. The point is to have fun making.

Zerg
Nov 10, 2010, 04:59 AM
So... On what date will be the deadline?

Sean
Nov 10, 2010, 05:07 PM
How about 2012? :P Naw kidding. Let's do 24th November.

Zerg
Nov 24, 2010, 11:29 AM
I don't really know how much time is there to the date become 25. but... :D here is 1,30 hour and'll be that

Obi1mcd
Nov 24, 2010, 10:09 PM
Well, the deadline's reached and there don't seem to be any more entries.
The contest isn't going well, to say the least.

Sean
Nov 26, 2010, 04:28 PM
Then, closed. The matter's settled.
