View Full Version : Emoticon Zendo Round 1

For those who don't know, Zendo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zendo_(game)) is a game of inductive logic. In Zendo, one player ("Master") creates a rule for structures ("koans") to follow. A structure is said to have the Buddha nature if and only if it follows this rule. The other players ("students") take it in turn to try and work out the rule by building koans and asking the master if they have the Buddha nature. This is normally played with physical pieces, but there's a variant played online using emoticons (here's a sample game (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/332667/emoticon-zendo-game-22)).
Emoticon Zendo Rules (this is based on the BoardGameGeek (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/Emoticon_Zendo) ruleset):
-There is no "Mondo" -- there is only "Master" and guessing
-There are no turns, but please wait a bit between posts to let others have a go.
-The null koan is allowed in Emoticon Zendo. Use the word "null" to indicate a koan with no emoticons.
-All guesses must be spoilered (using [ spoiler ] ... [ /spoiler ] or [ lightspoiler] ... [ /lightspoiler ] tags)
-The winner gets to set the next challenge
Emoticon Zendo Conventions:
-Koans are built from a single line of emoticons. No letters/numbers/etc.
-The 2nd emoticon from the left is in 'position #2', etc.
-The master must obey the Spock rule (http://www.icehousegames.org/wiki/index.php?title=Spock_rule) (i.e. the rule can't depend on things like who made the koan).

Congratulations to n0, who achieved enlightenment.
The rule was a koan has the Buddha nature if and only if the koan contains emoticons of differing heights.

Maybe I'm trying a bit too fast, but...
A koan has the Buddha-nature if and only if it contains an even number of different emoticons.

I've just realised that I got a koan wrong in the previous post, and this one does have the Buddha nature (I'll edit the post):

Oh, I thought n0 will win now, but if he was wrong, maybe I can keep trying. This thing however is quite weird.

This was my original thought, and nothing here seems to ruin this thought: Lines that have smilies of differing sizes have the buddha nature.

You are close to grasping the Buddha nature, but have yet to achieve enlightenment. For example, the following koan follows your rule and yet does not have the Buddha nature:
:lol::Z

So it'd just be differing in height then?

You have successfully mastered the Buddha nature and have achieved enlightenment! Now go and create your own rule (in a new thread please, to avoid confusion)!
(My rule was A koan has the Buddha nature if and only if the koan contains emoticons of differing heights.)
