View Full Version : JJ2 online becoming more active lately?

Some people that say JJ2 will "die" someday. But I think it's becoming more active lately, at least when since when I first started playing online anyway starting around late July of 2009. I've also noticed quite an amount of old members becoming active again, and people hosting more often, if you exclude all those extra zeal servers. However, I highly doubt it'll become as active as it was when it first came out. What do you think is causing more people to return and start playing jj2? (yes, online jj2 does get some new people every now and then still). I remember when 2009 December JDC was over, JJ2 was so quiet in January. But this years January seemed to have had more activity. By the way, I've actually played offline starting round about 1999 to 2001. Somewhere in between those, I can't remember...

When I got JJ2 in fall 1998 it was after the list server had crashed already, they did not come back up until early 1999. These days are are almost as active as ever, of course there are some down times always. But I think people are simply still looking for good computer games; Jazz is not hard to find for someone wanting to play an online multiplayer platform sidescrolling shooter, plus community websites help newbies get in business to compete with everyone. We all must be thankful for the technological updates to the game such as BlurredD's Jazz2+

I started playing offline a long time ago, around when the game came out. I quit for years, then picked it up again and started playing online fairly actively starting in 2008, and played for a year or two, before becoming inactive online again.

98, but took some brakes. after 2001 and after 2005 or 06.
The 2nd one was pretty long and I mainly just did JDC here and there for a week or two:)

I recall that you had something like an eight year stretch where you could host but couldn't join other servers without doing something involving a phone and lots of money. Confirm/deny?

2000.
This is by far the most active I have ever seen/can remember.
One major difference is that around 12 - 8AM GMT, the game is almost dead. That used to be different :).
Either way, its good to see more and more players join this game :D

I wish I started playing online earlier. A lot of the American JJ2 players have left, yet there's still many polish players around. That's probably why it becomes so dead at that time now (I don't mean American players hate polish players). Around my timezone JJ2 is mostly active around the afternoon, which is about 2pm to 4pm is where it has most activity. I wonder...

minmay: I wouldn't go so far as 8 years, and there wasn't a lot of money involved, but there was definitely a period when I could host natively and join only by dialup modem. These days I can join but not host. The grass is always greener on the other side.

Yes. More active than it's been since 2003 for sure. Odd that many people here voted for 2008, as that was probably the most gloomy year since I came. People started talking about JJ2's death in 2007, but now it's more alive than ever and no JJ2WC event was as big as JJ2WC III.

Btw, this poll needs an 1997 option for Emp. :)

I had the same as you for years, now I can do both.
Need help with forwarding ports?

Lol...
Emp actually claimed to win some blablabla tournament at JJ2 in 1995 or something at one point. Still, he said it wasn't a lie... hm...

It seems I'm the only one who's never played online. Am I missing much?

That's not always true when you start playing online. Unless you're completely new to jj2 overall. When I started playing online, I was decent. Well, decent enough to win The Server and possibly ZA too if there weren't any other decent players around. "walk, stand and shoot and maybe someone will die, derp" people are quite common in public servers and you can kill them very easily. Actually I used to play like that against my brother a long time ago when I was like 4 or 5 years old. Possibly 6 years...not sure. Just know the magic run button and you'll do alright. I had happened to start with Jazz and did alright. Of course, I play much better now.

true, go on zeal alpha, and you'll have loads of fun in my opinion. In fact when I came back last year and did some zeal alpha games, I really felt good about myself, and it was actually pretty fun.

In fact, if a couple of good players join, I think ZA is pretty fun even if you're in top form:)

But otherwise, check out zeal duels, tons of 3v3's , 2v2's and 1v1's being played:)

Yeah, ZA generally is a good server to boost some confidence cause there's always many players there..

EDIT: What the hell have I done wrong now? "noob lol noob noob" This rep system sucks...so simply because I haven't played for a long time online I start getting negrepped? Wow. Actually, perhaps its just being done for the sake of nothing.

It's because of your serious reply to Spaceboy's post, you clearly didn't get the sarcasm of it. Well, maybe you don't know Emp well enough, he thinks he's been playing JJ2 since like 1995 :D just get used to Emp jokes ;)

sven: if you can do better than every program the community has made for the issue plus every port forwarding program or guide I can find on the internet: please!

I'm not good at understanding sarcasm on the internet. I can usually tell if someone is sarcastic by the way the say it (tone of voice), or if it's the opposite of what they're saying. That's just part of me, I've misinterpreted other "jokes" before...you guys don't happen to know me well enough.

I would argue that while the general activity in public servers is at a relative high point, the amount of skilled players is less than it has been in the past.

While I haven't played online as long as you have, I know what you mean. Most of the skilled palyers tend to hang out at servers like Zeal duels, which I don't go on as much anymore. It's hard to find a skilled player on The Server, or better to say, public servers overall. I usually leave it if it's just full of "walk n' shoot" people, oh and not to mention idlers obviously, because it's too easy to win.

Definitely, the skilled players are mostly the same and everybody knows who's who and what is who's strong point...

Dunno what's going on now (didn't play for a year), but JJ2 was real active for the latter part of 2006. IIRC there was always a good server to join, 24/7. I don't remember it ever peaking after that.
