View Full Version : JCS Awards [2011] - Voting

Ragnarok!
Jan 1, 2012, 12:10 PM
Okay if you ask me, nominations don't really need much more to go into them. Let me explain the rules to this part of the JCS awards then!

1) You are allowed to vote for one level/person for each category, no more.
2) You are not limited to voting within the nominations, but you are advised to at least check these levels if you haven't already, in order to make your vote fair.
3) Votes are to be kept private. In order to vote, post your votes here and then delete the post after you have posted it, and a moderator will recover it when voting is over. Alternatively, if this doesn't work for you, you are allowed to PM them to me, but I will announce your votes once voting is over.
4) Anyone who does not follow rules 1 and 3; your votes will be null and void.

VOTING ENDS 16th JANUARY!

Without further ado, here are the nominations for each category!

Before someone makes a wrong choice, you forgot to include Cave 2 (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/6549/cave-2/) by Dx in the SP section (I nominated (http://www.jazz2online.com/jcf/showpost.php?p=473217&postcount=5) it). Probably you somehow accidentally added The Citadel instead, which is now present in two categories. Unless I'm wrong and it's done on purpose, because SP and tests aren't very distant. If so, I still consider it a bad idea, since it wasn't nominated as an SP level.

Best Battle - The Impossible Fortress
It's a close call between many of the levels here. 2011 certainly was a great year for Battle levels, and it's tough to make a solid decision as there were so many top quality efforts this year. I have decided to vote for cooba's Impossible Fortress because although the level takes a lot of getting used to, it's more innovative than the other nominations and ranks at the top in terms of fun factor as well. I was tempted to vote for Moonlit Harbor though, as it was probably the best Battle level in terms of overall gameplay, but it felt rather generic.

Best CTF - Frontier Falls
Once again, a tough category, although I think that Frontier Falls is a clear winner to me. It doesn't try anything radically new, but it is simply a wonder to play. If I could only play one new level this year, I would play this one.

Best Other Multiplayer Release - Power Plant
I enjoyed playing this level in Snooze's server. The concept is pretty evil but also adds an interesting dynamic to the standard GF gameplay.

Best Pack - OLC Battle Pack 2
A no-brainer. 7 high quality levels, what more could you ask for?

Best Single Player - Cave 2
Resurrection of Evil was a close runner up, but I have decided to vote for Cave 2 on the grounds that it feels a lot fresher; as decent as RoE is, you can't help but notice the rather profound Devres influences.

Best Tileset - Rage of Aquarius
I simply adore how the Castle and Haunted House tiles were merged together seemlessly, and despite all its weirdnesses, this is a truly excellent conversion that feels more like an original tileset.

Best JCSer - Obsessive Level Creators (no vote)
This is probably the hardest category for me to vote in. There's no doubt that OLC has been the dominant force in the JCS this year, consistently producing quality levels. I simply cannot decide between CelL/cooba/Ragnarok. All three have had a very strong year, each with their own personal highlights. I've decided not to vote in this category, but I will state that OLC in general has been the main source of the year's finest levels.

I can't promise it'll be up til Jan16, but atleast for a few days so ppl can experience them.

We stiil need one for CTF, however...

Ok, here are my votes:

Best Battle: Conflux by Superjazz.
I've been around for 11 years now (under different names), so i've seen a lot of awesome lvls and know most of the special tricks and gimmicks there are. However, sometimes I still see a design that wows me. This was one of these cases. GJ.

Best CTF: Dusk of Serenity by Ragnarok
Great eyecandy, layout worked fine. I downloaded this after some of the aEs members asked me to add this to our server. We then proceeded to play this, and although I got pwned as usuall I really enjoyed this lvl

Best Other: the Citadel Test by Lithium
Fun test, portal references, not too hard (even for me XD)

Best 2011 pack: BUT ENOUGH TALK (OLC)
Great line up, plays well.

Best Singleplayer: Neutral (I dont vote here)
Haven't played much SP since 2006 XD

Best Tileset: Rage of Aquarius by Violet CLM
Looks good :)

Best JCS'er: Ragnarok
From the ones listed, his stuff rocks the most :) (this was hard...)

Best Battle: Moonlit Harbor was my favorite level from our pack and this hasn't changed.
Best CTF: Frontier Falls already got a review from me and I advise you to read it.
Best Other MP: Disruption is original and a bunch of fun.
Best Pack: BUT ENOUGH TALK is top notch, and I like how every level was pretty much an OLC collaboration.
Best Tileset: Rage of Aquarius trode new ground using old artwork, and is not Castle+.
Best JCSer: CelL technically only made three levels this year, but they probably took more effort than everybody else's. Also, there were no JCS awards in the years he was the most prolific creator, so if he wins now it could be a good compensation award!

My votes:

Best Battle: The Impossible Metropolis by cooba
Best CTF: Dusk of Serenity by Ragnarok
Best Pack: BUT ENOUGH TALK! (Another OLC Battle Pack) by Obsessive Level Creators
Best Tileset: Medvio by Violet CLM
Best JCSer: cooba

All I can say is that it was very hard to choose. CelL especially was close runner up after cooba and rag. Also sorry to XLM but these Rag and cooba were just unavoidable and beast this year.

As for Best JCSer, cooba clearly did a lot of levels this year. If not alone, then it would have been a collab, if not helping others with levels.

Also want to mention Firesword, for Fall era. If it wasn't for the bottom of the level i would definitly have chosen it. In general it's totally my cup of tea and definitly impresses me a lot more than your other latest releases. If it wasn't for the horrible seek power up placement and the 1 big gimmick at the pit, I would have favoured this for the Best battle section, I'm sorry to dissapoint you. Nonetheless i am still impressed and i think you pulled of great work.

Lastly, a big shoutout to all those great levelmakers last year that all put so much effort in it. Also to those who were nominated for SP and other MP, the reason i didn't vote for them is that i barely play tests or SP and I think it wouldn't be fair to vote for something you never tried.

Good luck everyone in 2012 :).

The Impossible Metropolis offers you staggeringly unique gameplay and an amazing surreal feel to it. Not to say the runner-ups aren't strong battle levels in their own merit, but the Impossible Metropolis was the clear winner here, congratulations to cooba!

Scratch best CTF of 2011, Frontier Falls is the best CTF of JJ2 history. Agree or disagree, Frontier Falls has a place in the mappool on JJ.net and should be cherished for its high quality and brilliant polish. The runner ups will hopefully have better luck next year (if Faw doesn't do something ridiculously good again).

This one was very very close, and not as many voters as in the other categories, however LaroB snatches the gold and has a very good pack up there. Do check it out if you haven't already!

Looks like Violet had a very good year! I don't really have much more to say on this but if you ask me all the tilesets released this year were of amazing quality.

And finally,

Looks like the collaborators of Eye of the Storm have some celebrating to do! (Poor GP). Many others got one vote. Clear winner here though, cooba has gone from strength to even greater strength, and a huge round of applause is well deserved here.

And that's just the way the cookie crumbled this year! Congratulations to all the winners and runner-ups, and also everyone else who even made a level. 2011 was certainly a tremendous year for levels and I hope everyone enjoyed this ceremony and 2011 as a whole!

Keep JCSing everybody! :D

This is me right now (and just as handsome as Matt Smith nonetheless):

Thanks to everyone who voted and to everyone who made levels! I'm very happy with how these turned out. When we were putting the pack together I was completely convinced Doomed Citadel and Raggot would win in their categories (they deserved it fully!), so me winning in two fields is a great surprise :) I swear I won't make anything as big as The Impossible Metropolis again (though I'll keep JCSing (FOREVER LOL)).

And those who voted for themselves can suck it down!

Wow, um. I wish I could disqualify Rage of Aquarius somehow, because I feel I did so little of the legwork for that one that it really shouldn't be the best tileset of the year. Obviously I did very little of the artwork myself -- there's a reason the whole thing took less than 48 hours -- and it's basically an homage to Sea of Flames from Wanderlust and the Land of Wrath and Angels, neither of which I personally created. Pretty much my sole contribution was taking other people's ideas (and artwork) and rearranging them. I don't disagree that I rearranged them well, and the set has certainly gotten some use in the interim, but it seems wrong that RoA should be in the same category as Palmtree Plaza, which (modulo the Sonic influence) was a completely original creation and really rather creative and well executed. Like, they're both good, but ought they really be in competition with one another? But I am glad you all liked it so much, and I hope to continue releasing interesting things for your enjoyment.

Well perhaps next year there will be more categories, such as best collaboration and best conversion instead of tileset on its own? =)

First of all, I want to congratulate everyone who has won an award.

I didn't vote this year because I was busy with other stuff, but I am still here. If the OLC pack didn't get released I could have won the best MP pack award. I'm surprised I still got 3 votes though. This year I probably won't get the best MP pack award because snz will release NAV.

It was definitely OLC's year, simply because not enough XLM levels were created (or not enough levels of the same quality) but I'm glad a XLM member has won an award. Also, I should have been less lazy after I released IA. So hopefully this year I will be less lazy and hopefully there will be more good XLM levels!

Yeah, I'd have to say that just about all of these on here are well deserved.

I was a little bummed that One Starry Night only got two votes, although since it is without a doubt the most tremendously underrated upload I've ever posted, it's not surprising.

Plus, it's awfully hard to argue with the two packs that beat it, and the numbers tell all. My heartfelt and sincere congratulations to both.

Frontier Falls was an obvious win. I mean, really. Was anything actually gonna come close to beating it?

Good job to everyone, and I promise to help make 2012 even better than 2011. God bless you all.
