View Full Version : JCS Awards 2012 - Voting

I believe that at this point it's safe to assume that everybody who wanted to nominate anything already did. It's pointless for me to rewrite something that has already been written so let me just quote Rag's words of wisdom explaining how voting works:
1) You are allowed to vote for one level/person for each category, no more.
2) You are not limited to voting within the nominations, but you are advised to at least check these levels if you haven't already, in order to make your vote fair.
3) Votes are to be kept private. In order to vote, post your votes here and then delete the post after you have posted it, and a moderator will recover it when voting is over. Alternatively, if this doesn't work for you, you are allowed to PM them to me, but I will announce your votes once voting is over.
4) Anyone who does not follow rules 1 and 3; your votes will be null and void.

VOTING ENDS 16th JANUARY!
The quoted deadline also applies. Here are all nominations:

Ragnarok!
Jan 1, 2013, 03:11 PM
Best Battle: Sodan Valtakunta by Snooze - I was very torn here between Delta Halo, Firebreather and this level, but decided to base my vote on how much I enjoyed them in recent JDC events and this one won by a landslide in that category, otherwise I'd rate them all 10/10.
Best CTF: Unknown Ruins by Loon - Odd choice probably, but I felt this was probably the dark horse of the CTF levels this year, and it turned out very clean and great. Antiquity and m0tiland came close. Blackjack was also very worth a mention.
Best Other: Solar by minmay - Didn't really need to think about this one, sorry everyone else <3
Best MP Pack: NAV by Snooze - Took me a long time to decide between the nominations in this category but in the end I guess I chose the pack I enjoyed the most. minmay's packs showed great innovation and were excellent packs (and probably have a great chance of winning anyway, but I'll vote for this). As for Loon, his pack was brilliant but didn't feel like a clear winner to me. Apologies!
Best Tileset: Scorpio Key by Violet
Best JCSer: minmay - Maybe he didn't have the best pack but as for general finish and quality in his levels as a whole, and quantity, by far a clear winner here. If there was a most improved category or something, I'd give it to Loon since he really did come out of nowhere and start making some pretty top quality stuff, but minmay has my vote here!

Best Battle - Frozen Lake
Closely tied with Sodan Valtakunta, though Frozen Lake wins my vote as I absolutely adore its atmosphere - despite being relatively minimalist in comparison to other Carrotus levels, Snooze uses the tileset in unique ways to create something very modern looking. It also plays just as well as it looks. Overall, one of Snooze's finest levels to date, and considering his impressive back-catalogue, that's quite a feat.

Best CTF - Black Jack
Throughly enjoyed playing this level in in a few 3v3s and in my CTF event. Antiquity deserves an honerable mention as the best looking CTF level of the year, though Black Jack won over slightly based on fun factor.

Best Other MP - Flood Control
Admittedly it's hard for me to vote in this category as I haven't played any of minmay's levels. However, I do remember Ragnarok's level being rather cool, so I'll go with that.

Best MP Pack - New Ages V

Best SP - n/a
Not voting here as I haven't played any of those releases.

Best Tileset - Scorpio Key
Nice curves, and purple too!

Best JCSer - Snooze

I should have JCS'ed more last year but unfortunately I didn't. Anyway, here are my votes:

Best Battle: Frozen Lake
Best CTF: Antiquity
Best other MP: Flood Control
Best MP: New Ages V
Best SP: N/A
Best tileset: Scorpio Key
Best JCS'er: Snooze

Also I want to say that Loon is improving very well, it's just that Snooze's pack had so many good levels.

Well, yeah, this and apparently Trigelateral by Ragnarok, which technically, although not on J2O, has been released in 2012 (and is available and popular on Zeal Duels servers - the file name is EZTrig.j2l), however I'm not entirely sure how Rag would feel about it. As mentioned in the OP, you are not limited to voting within nominations, so if anybody wants to, they are still free to vote for these two CTF levels (or any other ones released in 2012). I will also accept it if somebody who has already voted decides to correct their previous post with another (also deleted/"hidden") one.

Ladies and gentlemen, here go JCS Awards.

~Best Battle Level of 2012
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_gold_3.pngFrozen Lake (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/6934/new-ages-v/) by Snooze (5 votes)
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_silver_1.pngDelta Halo (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/6931/total-annihilation-i-massive-destruction/) by Loon (4 votes)

On the first sight, these levels offer some of the best visual experiences you can have with JJ2. However, the apogee of their glory is only present to those who had an opportunity to play them. Each of the levels has its own unique gameplay and deserves to be played for as long as there are community members who know how to change game mode to battle.

Black Jack. I used to hope it will enter the jjnet map pool, but I realized it would only discourage playing this level for fun. And being played for fun is something this work of art deserves much more than than being overplayed for points and clan competition. Oh well. The runner-up, Antiquity is a level from New Ages V pack with skillful tileset use and interesting gameplay. A very curious thing is Plumbe's debut, whose both levels uploaded this year got a third place in this category. Nice job there.

~Best Other MP Level of 2012
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_gold_3.pngFlood Control (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/6886/ss3-flood-control/) by Ragnarok (5 votes)

http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_bronze_2.pngSolar (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/6890/crime-and-punishment/) by minmay (2 votes)

As can be seen, even the most minimal levels can appeal to players, introduce innovations and win awards. I assume that the popularity of Rag's level is in part effected by JDC race event, but admittedly it is a worthy winner. Nonetheless, I can assure that both the second and third place are also of high quality, so go check them out if you haven't yet!

~Best MP Pack of 2012
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_gold_3.pngNew Ages V (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/6934/new-ages-v/) by Snooze (10 votes)
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_silver_1.pngCrime and Punishment (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/6890/crime-and-punishment/) by minmay (2 votes)

This could have been foreseen easily. There was no way any of the other packs uploaded this year could outrun Snooze's 14 top-notch battle/CTF levels. Each of the levels is a masterpiece on its own but all together they form one of the best MP packs in JJ2 history. minmay's Crime and Punishment, even if the difference in amount of votes is big, still deserves attention for acquiring enough votes to qualify despite the presence of NAV.

~Best Single Player Release of 2012
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_gold_3.pngResurrection of Evil Episode 2 (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/6930/resurrection-of-evil-episode-2-spear-of-darkness/) by Laro B. (5 votes)
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_gold_3.pngQueen of Board (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/7004/queen-of-board/) by Sir Ementaler (5 votes)

A draw! I expected vote numbers to be close here, but not this close. Although one of the uploads is a pack and the other is only a stand-alone level, they are both of fantastic quality (if I can say so myself :P) and are worth the time they take to complete. If EvilMike returned to play this year's SP levels, he sure would be proud. Well, either that or frustrated by excessive difficulty level present in all of the nominations, one of the two.

~Best Tileset of 2012
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_gold_3.pngScorpio Key (http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/6862/scorpio-key/) by Violet CLM (11 votes)

As much as I hoped for more variety in votes in this category, I suppose this result was determined once the name of Violet's conversion was placed on the list of nominations. Partly due to a deficit of tilesets this year, partly thanks to the fact this one is actually really awesome, Violet obtains his third gold award for the best tileset in a row, this time gaining almost all the votes in the category.

And the grand winner is...

~Best JCSer of 2012
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_gold_3.pngSnooze (http://www.jazz2online.com/user/5826/snz/downloads/) - New Ages V - (8 votes)
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_silver_1.pngminmay (http://www.jazz2online.com/user/1020/minmay/downloads/) - Crime and Punishment, Episodic Ground Force Pack Episode 3 - (3 votes)
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/media/icons/award_star_bronze_2.pngRagnarok (http://www.jazz2online.com/user/4043/ragnarok/downloads/) - Flood Control, Dusk v3, Trigelateral, Technodus Cargo Station v3 - (2 votes)

What can I say, New Ages V. One giant upload was enough for Snooze to destroy his competition and win the most prestigious annual JCS Award. Second came minmay with two first-rate packs of community-made game modes levels which can be expected to quickly become JDC classics. Rag's third place is... somewhat surprising to me, I admit, but I suppose that in a big part he owes it to levels that were never officially uploaded to J2O, as well as his little innovative race level.

Congratulations to all winners and good luck in 2013!

Im at loss of words. I recall thinking New Ages V got completely forgotten but then the levels got played thanks to JDC. I wasnt so happy with all the levels, but overall I was happy that I got the project out of the way.

Oh and if I'd ever make another pack, now that would have to be something quite epic. I can surely say I would do something like FawFuL did on planetary. doesnt that sound interesting? :)

anyway congrats for CJ, and Laro/SE too. I am really waiting for RoE3!!! In general its annoying how SP releases have ceased to appear.

In general its annoying how SP releases have ceased to appear.

Let not your heart be troubled. I promised competition for RoE this year, and competition RoE shall have. As soon as I hear back from Violet CLM on a few final tweaks, World of Jazz will be taking Jazz2Online by storm. Expect new SP cannon fodder hopefully within the next week or two.

Really disappointed that this turned out to be one of those years where good looking levels were chosen over great playing levels, that's all I'm saying.

I think NAV has some fun levels like Frozen Lake.

I like about a couple of Minmay's levels, but most of the other levels aren't too innovative imo (gameplay and ec etc). Nevertheless, I'd like to see them more in jdc events etc.
