First, confirm your ambition. There's at least a dozen of fangame attempts posted over the years, what makes you think yours will ever see the light of day?
Second, try some GameMaker tutorials and follow them step by step, it's usually a quicker way to learn than just action-reaction and see how it goes.
Third, communicate with fellow designers and share some work and ideas, the Official GameMaker Community (http://gmc.yoyogames.com/) would be a good start.
Fourth, SUCCESS! 8D lol

Hey, don't be too hard on him.
Besides, Game Maker isn't actually that bad, and can be used to make some pretty serious stuff, and some truly awesome stuff(Especially given the limitations).

In fact, it has scripting and can borrow features from external libraries (DLL's). with enough experience you can make games of commercial quality without anyone seeing or noticing it's a 'Game Maker game'.
Most often, the problem is the little devotion the designer has, which is why I encouraged him to think about that before considering any further steps. ;)

I completely agree.
I've played some pretty amazing games, and they didn't feel at all like they were made in Game Maker, such as Caveman Craig 2, An Untitled Story, and Iji.
So, Burnout, my advise is to always use the built-in GML scripting, and to never use the Drag-and-Drop icons.
