View Full Version : My JCS Won't Load Some Levels

I just recently got a new computer. I installed the 1.23 Jazz Jackrabbit 2 program on it, and as I went to play certain levels, I discovered a rather strange problem: I can't load certain levels in my Jazz Creation Station.

Levels that came with Jazz 2 (i.e.-the singleplayer stages like Dungeon Dilemma, Knight Cap, et cetera) and levels I create myself in the JCS seem to work just fine. However, when I go to play levels downloaded from Jazz2Online or levels emailed to me, the JCS program will automatically close if it's open, or it won't start up at all if it isn't.

Non-Jazz2-included music tracks don't seem to work, either; however, for whatever reason, non-Jazz2-included tilesets DO. As far as I know, all of the files in question are 1.23-compatible, so I'm not sure what's going on.

Interestingly, if I open the problem levels from the Home Cooked Levels list in the Jazz2 game engine, they work just fine (although music still won't play if it isn't one of the original Jazz2 songs).

I don't know if it's simply a program error, or maybe a computer security issue; my laptop is Windows XP, but so was my old one. My gut says it's a security issue of some sort, but any help anyone can offer would be appreciated.

Thanks!

This might be caused by DEP: Try turning it off (http://www.redall.com.au/computer-and-newtowrking/disable-data-execution-prevention-dep-completely-0n-windows-xp/). Though I never had problems with DEP and any JJ2 file myself.

What version of Windows XP are you running? Service Pack 1, 2, or 3?
A clean install or some kind of restore from your old PC? I know that running a modified/serviced backup image that used to run on different hardware might cause these kind of stability errors.

Just throwing this out there, does this happen with plus as well?

Are you using the newest plus?

No but plus doesn't do anything to JCS.

P32, maybe it's something to do with your JCS.ini?

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you guys. I've been a bit busy lately (and lazy when not busy :P )

I'm not using Plus at all yet. Like I said, this was a recently installed Jazz 2 program on a new machine, and I haven't gotten the chance to Plusify it yet. Far as I know, the files should all be brand new.

My computer is a Service Pack 3 Windows XP. I'll keep DEP in mind, although the link Slaz provided made it sound like a last-resort option.

JCS.ini looks fine (though I wasn't really messing with it in the first place), although I'm not sure what that has to do with the program's selective level loading.

Could it possibly be anti virus software or other protection software interfering with downloaded files?

Which Antivirus are you using?

Apart from my Windows Firewall (looks over both shoulders for spying hackers), I haven't installed antivirus software yet.

Okay, try disabling Windows Firewall for a few minutes, then try JCS. Is it still broken?

Turned the firewall off and tried it, didn't seem to have any effect.

Try reinstalling the game, it might work.

I say try what Slaz suggested, since I don't see any alternative.
Please do post the results here.

Turning DEP off didn't help, and both reinstalling the program and completely uninstalling/fresh installing it didn't help either.

Interestingly, though, I was just looking at the game's main menu, and it says my version is 1.22. Not sure what the difference between 1.22 and 1.23 is, but just throwing it out there.

I've never tried 1.22 myself, also don't have any clue about the differences with 1.23, but I figure it could have an older version of JCS that won't load 1.23 levels.

See if updating (http://www.jazz2online.com/patches/j2patch_123r.exe) fixes it.

Yes sir, Jerry, that did appear to fix it.

Thank you, everyone who helped me get it fixed!!! :D
