View Full Version : Playing Jazz Jackrabbit 2 on Android

A few weeks ago I wished to play Jazz Jackrabbit 2 on my Android mobile. Luckily, I found on Youtube a video of somebody attemping to play JJ2 on his Android tablet, but he was complaining that the game is too laggy to be playable. I tried on my phone and with the settings set to minimum and disabled music it works almost perfect (The beach levels lag a little bit). Here are some photos of my single player progress: http://imgur.com/a/2MoJJ#0 (Currently at "Jungle Jump" level)
To play Jazz Jackrabbit 2 on your Android phone/tablet, watch the video below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f21K1Exq2jA
You'll have to install a program for opening .iso files on the PC (Suggestion: PowerISO), DosBOX Turbo and Game Pad for your Android device.
I don't have the time to write a complete tutorial, but here are some optimization tips:
-Disable the sound from DosBOX Turbo;
-Set the video settings to minimum;
-Choose a lower resolution for the game if it does still lag;
-Set the memory size (memsize) from the DosBOX config (dosbox.conf) to 32 MB. This worked for me.
Also, here's a suggestion for how to set your keys for a better gameplay:
Set the controls of JJ2 like that: http://imgur.com/Zd4yqkM
The controls for DosBOX Turbo should look like this (Set them using Game Pad): http://imgur.com/4JpIpxh
It doesn't work on multiplayer mode, at least not for me.
Anyway, if you have trouble with anything please answer this thread. I am too busy to write a full tutorial of this, unfortunately. Have a nice day!

I believe not. DosBOX Turbo works WAAAY better than aDOSBox. You can try, but even if it will work, it will be reaaaally laggy. I'd link the full version of DosBOX Turbo but I don't think it's legal to post it here so find it yourself.

DosBOX Turbo for the win, it's perfect for emulating DOS games (in this case old PC games)

I sometimes play JJ1 on my Asus Transformer tablet using DOSBox Turbo, works flawless! They also got a Manager app that works alongside it, so you can do per-game configurations and even make a boxart GUI that instantly launches them.
It may sounds a bit awkward that an open-source program is being sold on Android, yet I sympathize with the developer's words that making it compatible with dozens of Android devices and personally supporting it by answering emails is taking up countless hours of his life. So I gladly paid for it (that was like 3 years ago).
Here's DOSBox Turbo: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fishstix.dosbox
And the manager (doesn't work without above app): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fishstix.dosboxlauncher

Yep, DOSBox Turbo is a very useful app for sure. I also play JJ1 on my mobile using it. Works fantastic! :)

Err, I don't fully understand what you mean there. Using a virtual keyboard like Hacker's Keyboard is by no means suited for games at all. Try Gamepad by Fishstix (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fishstix.gameboard) which is optimized for Dosbox.

DOSBox Turbo is finally free? Wow! So the community did blackmail them into it after all! (They previously asked money for it while it was illegal to do so according to the DOSBox license)

There is a free version available now, indeed. I didn't mind paying for it back then as the porting job was apparently very time consuming and email support is fast and helpful.
And Gamerz, you need to map the Joystick buttons to keys in DosBox and set those from the JJ1 options menu (if they aren't the standard arrows, Ctrl, and Space).

Use a search engine. It's useful and saves others time.
Jazz is not a sonic styled game. Just because he can run fast, does not make it one. It's not hard to program a character that can run fast, it's the momentum gaining and physics, and Jazzes and Sonics (can run on walls, slows down going up slopes and vice versa, takes longer to gain momentum, can jump to gain momentum) are completely different. Plus it's not even meant for making other styled games on.

Doesn't matter if it's JJ1, my points still stand the exactly same way as they do before.
This isn't the place to discuss remakes though.

i've played jj1 on my android a bit. had a lot of performance issues and sync issues but i had it running. never mingled with jj2.

Last time I tried, WebJCS worked pretty well on Chrome for Android. It just needs an USB/BT pointing device as it wasn't designed with touch controls in mind. Otherwise tiles cannot be selected properly.

You should make a thread explaining how to use WebJCS on Android :)

You need to host it on a PC first, preferably a dedicated server as it's always on. Having to turn on your PC to use a program on your mobile device kind of breaks the point for most. The download description and config's from WebJCS explain how to set it up.
Then just open Chrome on your android and navigate to the IP adress from your PC or server followed by the port number WebJCS listens to.
This probably applies to larger screen devices only, as you need enough screen space to display the 4 JCS views without zoom, and still have enough space to work comfortably.

Not really what I expected. The fact that it depends on the PC ruins it. Still, good to know :)

Running WebJCS on Android itself is not impossible. Besides javascript and HTML5 it only depends on Node.js to run, which has been ported to android before. I'm not experienced enough to make it, but a self-contained WebJCS app based on Node.js would be possible.
Maybe ask DJazz for ideas? He made WebJCS after all, but I believe he's quite busy nowadays.
