Every now and then people ask me for info on how active the forum really is these days. I've made a self-updating graph image that shows exactly that:

<a href="http://www.jazz2online.com/jcf_graph.php"><img src="http://www.jazz2online.com/jcf_graph.php" width="600"></a>

(click for zoom)

Dark bars are total posts, light bars are posts in Jazz Jackrabbit-related forums.

There was no thread at hand to put this in, so here's a dedicated one. Go forth and word-procreate upon this ‘forum’ upon which ‘men’ from the ‘internet’ may ‘talk’ to one another. I guess.

Any theories on the activity peaks? They don't even come at the say time a-year.

New users and JJ2+ releases are probably the largest factors, plus stuff like the Bash to a more limited extent.

So it seems like JCF has been relatively stagnant since 2012, but 2015 has actually been more active. Interesting.

But I think the amount of good posts has decreased.

This year we have seen some new faces. Can't remember much new people back in 2011 and 2012.

It's when I became an admin. Guess it was all downhill from there :(

One can only wonder how much of the decline is caused by people learning to say nothing when they've got nothing to say.
I observed that JCF, over the years, became much more focused on the franchise. It no longer discusses beliefs, personal lives, or Asian men hairstyles (http://www.jazz2online.com/jcf/showthread.php?t=17336). Our most recent thread about religion was started by KRSplat and immediately locked. I think it was about religion because it had it in the title, although it seemed to mostly have something to do with "evaporation and freezing of moon water". Our second to most recent thread about religion was last replied to in 2010, if you ignore its revival by KRSplat in 2011. Although, forum games probably make up a large percentage of the lost activity too. They won't be missed.
Nowadays the most popular topics here are JJ2 utilities, JJ2 levels, JJ2 tilesets, JJ2 contests, JJ2 tournaments, JJ2 bugs, JCF meta-discussion (which, come to think about it, I'm currently partaking in), and updates on lives of old friends from the community.
I wonder what this graph would look like if posts in Jazz Jackrabbit Forums were marked in a different color.

On a less related note, that scale...
0, 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000, 3499? 6998!? I knew you were a monster Stijn but sometimes you're taking it too far.

That's a really interesting idea. I've updated the image and indeed it seems to be mostly the posts in non-JJ-related forums* that dropped off.

Sorry for the scale :'(

Theorizing: way back when I was a teenager, I didn't have a lot of offline places to talk about politics, religion and other more serious topics like that. It just didn't come up in day-to-day conversation. Posting on the JCF was a great way to talk about these things anyway.

Nowadays I have plenty of other outlets for that sort of stuff (if university is good for anything, it's that), and I've become fairly jaded by online discussion on polarizing topics. Once you've spent a while online, it's obvious pretty much all such discussions that don't involve a tripping KRSplat follow the same pattern. When I and the internet were a lot younger and I was a little bit more ignorant, it felt like I still could get something out of discussing my thoughts on politics/ethics/philosophy on this forum. Now, not so much anymore.

I know, during that time I lost my admin status. I see a connection here.

Funnily enough, 2006 was when I first started lurking. XD

Also, something I just remembered...
