View Full Version : I might return to level making, but need some advice.

For your convince here is a link to all the levels I made in the past:
http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/search/bjarni/
I don't need to know why these levels are bad, I already know why they were bad. However, what I need is advice on how I can make better levels.
I know one thing I did terribly wrong back when I was a kid/teenager, in the hard difficulty the levels are overcrowded with enemies. It won't happen when I get back to level making. But what else?
Bjarni isn't my name on Jazz2Online anymore, it's now Blaze The Movie Fan, which is my Internet name everywhere.
When I return to level making (which I will eventually) I will go back to this thread and read all the constructive criticism. Again, I don't want just reasons why my old levels were bad, I also wanna know how I can improve and make better levels.

Play what SP levels you like and learn what makes those good. Experiment. Make sure tiles actually tile. Keep layout varied. That does not mean place random platforms everywhere, however, just avoid it being a long straight line.

Right now, I'm working on a little remake of one of your levels.
It will be ready in within a week. Then, I'll give you proper advice by comparing your level with the remake.
And by the looks of it, you also need some tileset making advice.

You are working on a remake of one of my levels? That's nice.
And yeah, I'm sure I do need help with making titlesets as well. Everything I made while I was a kid was beyond lazy since it was all made within a day with no thought progress, but don't worry, that won't be the case for my next levelpack. I will take my time with it, and none of the levels in that levelpack can be beat within a day.
Anyway I look forward to a remake of one of my old levels. Don't tell me what level you're remaking, I wanna see it for myself when I play it.

I'm modifying the code of the level remake with AngelScript.
I'll also make a version without AngelScript, one that does not require you to install JJ2+ on your computer.
But the scripted one includes a few cool things like:
- You have to kill a precise amount of enemies to unlock a door
- Spike platforms descend from the floor to bruise you (hope you're ready)
- Generic enemies have much higher amounts of health
- Bottomless pits instantly kill you (watch your step)
- Platforms move left and right and have no chains
I can teach you the very basics of AngelScript if you want, but if you want to go advanced, ask any questions HERE (http://www.jazz2online.com/jcf/showthread.php?t=19503)
You can DOWNLOAD (https://copy.com/ZtYGe38jsuu4vWWh) the beta here. It only works properly if you have the latest JJ2+ installed. I haven't tested it. This is your job. You can do whatever you want to the level. It's a remake of YOUR level after all.

The beta of this is unplayable. Totally unplayable. It glitches that much, but I thank you for trying.

If you mean the sky is white, all platforms are steady, some walls are red and the text signs don't display any text, then you have NOT installed JJ2+.
INSTALL JJ2+!!!
JJ2+ is NOT JJ2. It's a different thing.
To install JJ2+ click THIS LINK (http://www.jazz2online.com/jj2plus/plus-2015-08-24.zip). The ZIP file contains files. Extract them all in your Jazz2 folder. Open plusifier.exe and follow the instructions. Open Jazz2+.exe and play the level from there.
If you just can't install JJ2+ at all, I'll work on a version of the level who does not require it.

It's hard to explain so I'm just gonna show you with a video clip:

The problem is the gameplay is incredibly slow. So it's hard to play the level.

Oh, that! Well, if the gameplay is so slow, you probably have an archaic computer, like Windows ME or Windows XP. I have Windows 10, so all levels run at ca. 120 fps.
I don't know how to simplify the code I wrote, so I'll post it on Angelscript Requests and Help and see if somebody can help.
As for the quick death, it's the no blink mode. It makes the game willingly harder.
EDIT: I've reuploaded the file with a lower palette update rate. It should go smoother now. If it still lags, open the .j2as file with Notepad++, find this line:
if (jjGameTicks % 3 == 2)
{
jjPalette.gradient(16 - thunderCounter + (thunderCounter * 16), 0 + (thunderCounter * 16), 16 - thunderCounter + (thunderCounter * 16), 32, 0, 0, 176, 32, 1);
jjPalette.apply();
jjSetFadeColors(16 - thunderCounter + (thunderCounter * 16), 0 + (thunderCounter * 16), 16 - thunderCounter + (thunderCounter * 16));
}
And DELETE IT!
You won't have the thunder effect on the background, but at least your game will go smoothly.
If it doesn't, I don't know how to help you.

Hey no worries the file is fixed, but for some reason I didn't have to do anything.
Anyway, this is a great level, thank you. I wish you uploaded it to the website so I could review it eventually, but you didn't.
