View Full Version : Jazz Jackrabbit 2 speedruns and custom level walkthroughs

I've been thinking about it for a long time (possibly for 2 years, even). Finally I decided to make a thread about it, hoping others will prompt me.
I will be doing custom single player level walkthroughs, and also multiplayer level showcases! But honestly I'd rather someone else record MP footage, since my uploading speed is well..kinda crap.
Feel free to request levels. The videos will be uploaded in 480p 30fps, with sound and music! Will there be voice? Uhh, you decide. I sound like a 14 year old boy but not an annoying one (I'm not a squeaker). I'd rather not upload separate versions because like I said, my uploading speed isn't very good.
Also, I'm going to aim for some world record speedruns. There will be a;
Xmas levels speedrun with Spaz and Lori
Shareware levels speedrun with Spaz
TSF speedrun with Spaz and Lori.
The original SP campaign with Lori. I just found out she always starts where Jazz is, too. And maybe runs with Jazz and Spaz too, but that'll require a lot more practice because those have records (which are actually good).
And somewhere long in the future will be an Asteroid city speedrun with Lori. There's some cool tricks with her.
EDIT: Okay, I might do some Jazz runs, but don't count on it. Also - forget walljump for now, unless it's the beginning of the Shareware episode.

Well, I'm looking forward to see your walkthrouhgs! And yes, I think there should be voice. Walkthroughs without voice are usually VERY boring and not worth watching.

I don't know how much you know about boys but usually a 14 year old boy's voice is pretty masculine. At least that's my case. Don't worry though, no one really cares about how your voice sounds unless it's annoying as hell so just go for it.
No idea if I can help you but I've got a great upload speed :\
There won't be any Jazz speedruns because uppercut is crap (there's no speedrunning potential with it). Sorry.

Thanks for reminding me this cheat exists. I totally forgot about it.

I'm glad to hear that you didn't give up on the idea. I'll mention once again that I've got a decent upload speed. If you want me to upload the video(s) for you, just tell me. I hope there is some way to help you with that.

That's pointless. Why would I send a file just for it to be uploaded, when sending a file involves uploading it in the first place? Youtube servers are pretty good.

I guess you're right. I just hope I can be helpful to you in some way.

Try compressing it to an x264 encoded MKV. (If your screencapping software can't do that, you could try recompressing it with something like Avidemux)

Well, I found that WebMconverter does a great job at reducing the filesize with minimal quality loss. It's even smaller than MP4.

The project has in fact, not died. It's more alive than ever before. Here's the sample of progress from some strats (or strategies for those who don't know the lingo) I improved/made or put there to recall on. I still got several more to post and work on. Not all path improvements are being posted though, since they are easy enough to remember for me (you'll find those in the upcoming fullgame runs).

They're all in 720p 60fps! Just because they're short clips.
Though I need change recording software to OBS once I make a fullgame run, to make the splitter work with in-game time (I guess). Also, the aspect ratio is annoying me with the letterboxing, along with being forced to record in sectioned window mode (which I have to fit manually with the mouse. Sometimes I don't get that quite right which results in a corner with dashes or a line).
Chances are, I'll very likely be doing a run of the Secret Files episode with Spaz or Lori first. The next run will probably be the Shareware episode with Spaz. I was first meant to do a run of the Christmas episode for well..Christmas but that never happened.
However, there will likely be no voice during my serious runs, because I suck ass at commentary. Seriously - If I did, 95% of it would be clacking keyboard buttons. I only tend to say things at the end of levels. When I'm focusing on a task while talking, I sound muffled.

Cool videos! Very interesting to see the better ways of passing these sections/doing things.
As for a full speedrun, I don't mind a lack of commentary. Probably better to just concentrate on what's important. Unless you record a commentary on it after the fact.

Back to it again. I want to get out a Spaz TSF run very soon. Uploading strategy clips that were rotting from May, along new Spaz ones that I need to do so I can attempt a quality run.
I'd like to get out JJ2 to a speedrunning event with episodes/characters that weren't featured before (which would be in several months time) along with some other games, so I'm pushing myself to work more on this. Either or, it gives me something in the habit to get off my ass.
So yeah, big playlist update: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOLvgiz0ic1b5d6WyQ2oJSkMsKBGkNLLS
As for custom level walkthroughs, a shitty upload speed deters me from doing that.

No matter what resolution you capture the videos at,
Make sure its 60 Fps. I rather 480p 60fps over 720p 30fps.
After all, YouTube video's at 720p looks ugly as 360p as the bit rate is fuckin low. Just do 480p 60fps.

YouTube doesn't support 60fps in resolutions below 720, though...

I may be using 480p for fullgame runs/level walkthroughs. I hate how youtube butchers the quality of 480p and below, but I have no choice. If you can point me to an alternative, be my guest though (will still upload to youtube for more exposure though).

You could record at 800x600 and upscale to 960x720 in editing software.

Never upscale.

Eh, for a YouTube upload, upscaling a little for the 60fps isn't too bad. If you really don't want to upscale it, you could just put black boarders around it, which might actually be useful for putting a clock on-screen or something, I guess?

+ Upscaling will look clearer and pixelated compared to blurry mess blurred ass spaz.
-Upscaling will will increase the video size though.
-Having borders around (top an d bottom)will make the video unappealing.

...why would I need to upscale when I can already record in 720p 60fps?
The problem is crap upload speed, not potato specs.

I'd love to upgrade our upload speed, but it seems impossible due to locational circumstances.
Also, timers are on during recording, not post-recording sessions.

Sorry, when I was quoting ya, the picture you posted didn't load on my browser somehow. So I assuned you had something like 15 KB/s.
But it seems you got 44 KB/s. (Aka 350 kbps)

Just upload things at night, and possibly part of the next day while you're at work. I used to do that when I uploaded my first few YT videos with around 50kbs. A Let's-Playing friend back then said he was uploading almost 24/7 with the same speed.
Thank raptor jesus for our fiberglass connections now.

Uploading at night or when not at home is risky.
keeping Electronic device turned on is risky. And PSU can explode anytine and then the whole house will be on fire. Not worth it.

Everything is a lot safer in the 21st century. :>
I once left the iron on at home when I went to school ( not intentionaly, of course), came back, no fire, nothing happened. Buut I didn't tell my parent because I really hate it when they spend hours telling me I'm always daydreaming and don't think of anything.

A lot safer. But not completely safe. Do yourself a favour and dont get killed.

Always turn off everything before goin out.
Keep a window open in your kitchen so that incase gas leaks, you wont die while switching on lights. Because gass will cum outta the house then.
Happy safety and speed running (°¤°)

You're far, far more likely to get robbed leaving the window open than for gas to leak (those who live on the ground floor, like us).
Then again, not all cookers run on gas. Ours runs on electric. Still, my previous point stands.
Hell, my dad leaves a light on when nobody is in to give the illusion somebody is in the house.
Electrical appliance disasters get reported on the news because it's a rare occurence. Bootlegs, poor wiring and undertested new products are the sole cause. If an electrical appliance has been safe for years, chances are it'll stay that way.
