View Full Version : The Silver Jubilee: JJ1 CTF Contest

Yup, cooba is running another contest. (I'll resolve the weapon one in the next few days, I promise)

Why?

1. The "event (https://jdc.jazz2online.com/)-sized CTF level" has been something of a dying art in the recent years, which is a little sad. We (as in PJ, Rag and I) have come to this realisation after yesterday's event wherein the existing pool of large CTFs suited for 16 people is very nearly exhausted.

2. Jazz is 25, and that's not an anniversary to take lightly at all. There should be at least some degree of pomp and splendor about it!

That's why I'm holding...

<div style="text-align: center; margin-top: 0.3em; margin-bottom: 1em; font-size: 2em; font-weight: bold;">The Silver Jubilee Contest!</div>Create a CTF level capable of supporting 16 or more players using a JJ1 conversion tileset.

<h2>Rules:</h2><strong>Must be uploaded to J2O before September 1st, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anywhere_on_Earth">UTC-12:00</a>.</strong>
That's four weeks to make a CTF level - depends on your view, it may be too long or too short. But I think this should be easier than creating levels for a <a href="http://jazzjackrabbit.net">specific audience</a>, since you have more creative freedom and the gameplay is not as closely scrutinized.

<strong>Must be at least 160 tiles in wide and 70 tiles tall</strong>
I was hoping to avoid a requirement like this, but I just know there will be some joker who will make an one screen level with a super complicated script that somehow makes the map "playable for 16 players". Symmetry is not required.

<strong>Must be using a converted JJ1 tileset</strong>
The level of advancement (i.e. is it a <a href="https://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/1797/jazz-1-candion/"</a>1:1 conversion</a>? Or is it more of a <a href="https://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/7689/candionv/">liberal interpretation</a>?) of your chosen tileset can vary, as long as the original graphics are still recognisable. JJ1 conversions created specifically for an entry for this contest are also welcome, and may be highly rewarded during judging.

<strong>Combining multiple tilesets in JJ2+ is permitted</strong>
This also allows non-JJ1 tilesets, but within reason. Using a handful of other artwork to create an impressive parallax background is within the rules. Making a Desolation level with a single 'kill this rabbit' poster is not.

<strong>Scripted gameplay modifications are permitted</strong>
Again, within reason. Focus on making a great CTF level first and on gimmicks later. This includes any custom weapons.

<strong>Your entry will be judged by the JDC administrators</strong>
This means PurpleJazz, Ragnarok, and I. Any entries made by aforementioned three will not be eligible to win.

<strong>Only one entry per contestant is permitted</strong>
Don't spread yourself thin.

<strong>The winner will receive a Steam code for <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/app/861540/Dicey_Dungeons/">Dicey Dungeons</a></strong>
It's a great game. I've been playing the alpha for almost 18 months now! There may be more than one winner.

Go!

I've uploaded a contest entry to J2O:

a Litany of Sounds

The level size is 160x70 but the playable area is significantly smaller.

Readme file is included in the .ZIP archive file and also on the J2O download page!

(Readme file is AfxLitany.oklol : readable in Notepad)

Are two variations of the same level permitted, like Light Switch?

Are two variations of the same level permitted, like Light Switch?Sure. I hope that doesn't mean I have to play Splat's entry twice though.

I am unnaturally fixated on Grass Platforms with enormous radii.

To all judges, enjoy playing 1v2 CtF

[Edit: reuploaded to J2O, added some vines and oneway events]

a Litany of Sounds is disqualified for not fitting the contest criteria (not a large CTF suited for 16 people).

This leaves Tech Tree as the only entry eligible to win.

Congratulations to Violet! A bit of a shame it won by essentially a walkover, as it's a very fine level that could stand to stiff competition.

Aww sweet, thank you! This was a fun little project to work on and now I can be satisfied that all four RaneforusV variants have been used at least once.

cooba[si]: it's violet as fuck
Yes, true, I can think of some things that I have definitely played with before. In my defense, I intentionally pushed myself to use copters.

cooba[si]: from red to blue
Recycled from an idea I had recently for a (much smaller) CTF level similar to One Spot or Undulation... the idea was there'd be trigger crates somewhere in the level which could be used to decide whether the warp would go to the blue base or the red base, so you'd need to coordinate with your teammates in order to score. Which base the warp was pointed at would be reflected in the colors of the level. The trouble with that idea was that at all the most crucial moments, both teams are headed for the same base, so there probably wouldn't be as much conflict as I wanted.

Besides that, the color change makes a lot more sense in the SILVER variant, where it tells you whether you're going to jail or not if you die.

cooba[si]: the layout is slightly confusing admittedly
My best advice here, oddly, is to look at the eyecandy. Different tiers of the level use slightly different graphics (scaffolding; trees; springs; technoir background; waterfalls) to help you tell at a glance where you are.

PurpleJazz: the background feels very sonic-y
Scripting the searchlight may owe a bit to Stardust Speedway, but otherwise, if I had anything particular in mind it was probably Technology.

Other inspirations I would probably be remiss in mentioning are Helldome for sort of the bottom hemisphere; Divide and Conquer for the coin jail; Pollution for layer 1; that one Diamondus level that was sort of a precursor to plusSeasons for the trees dropping leaves; and an amalgamation of multiple levels using xlmdamn3 for the layout in general.

GJ and GL with Dicey Dungeons; IDK a lot about that game, it seems dicey... and ...dungeonful.

cooba[si]: it's violet as fuck

Yes, true,

truer words have never been said.
