View Full Version : Should J2O auto-email you when your upload gets a review?

J2O stores your email addresses in case you need to fill out the Forgot Password form. And often uploads are reviewed months or years after they first get added to J2O, and maybe people shouldn't have to keep checking every one of their uploads (or the latest reviews page (https://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/reviews/)) every few days for the rest of their life. For example, sonicnathan1 uploaded an entire Single Player episode a few months ago, and has kept visiting J2O ever since, presumably waiting for someone else to review it.

Would it be a good idea for J2O to automatically send you an email whenever somebody reviews one of your uploads?

I'm imagining this as an opt-out setting, not opt-in, because people who are likely to visit their J2O user settings are likely to see their reviews anyway, whereas Kejero (https://www.jazz2online.com/user/133/kejero/downloads/) (for example) is not going to come visit J2O unless he gets an email saying somebody reviewed something.

Would this be helpful and make people happy to see that other people are still reviewing their old work? Would it be annoying? Would it be a violation of some european law I'm not familiar with?

I think this would be a very good idea.

I found an existing setting for users deciding whether private messages should send them an email, and added it to the User Settings page (https://www.jazz2online.com/user/edit/) with the label "Email me whenever somebody reviews one of my downloads or sends me a private message." (It doesn't actually do that right now though, still tinkering.) However...

Would it be a violation of some european law I'm not familiar with?
Specifically it feels like this would be a problem for Article 13 of the EU's ePrivacy Directive, (https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=CELEX:32002L0058&from=EN) which requires email communications to be opt-in. There's a sale-related exception that I don't think really applies here. So we could probably auto turn on that checkbox for everyone who lives in non-EU countries (since users do pick which countries they live in), but Europeans would have to remember their J2O account exists and check that box manually.

or just a message in your j20 inbox.
This wouldn't solve anything: the idea is to let people know they got reviews without them visiting J2O religiously. Sending messages to their inbox instead would require them to not only visit J2O but also be logged in while doing so.

This has been implemented! (https://www.jazz2online.com/news/comments.php?newsID=1870) With the region-based checkbox concern I mentioned in the last reply.

I do kind of wonder if there should be a rating cutoff, like do you actually want to get emailed if somebody gives you a 1? Hmm.
