View Full Version : Jazz2 Server Stalls When Computer Sets Monitor to Low Power (?)

It seems that when the monitor goes in to low-power mode (called by Windows) it causes the server to stall. It might even be the same effect as minimizing the server.

I found this out today because I decided to let the monitor turn its self off instead of turning it off manually whwn I went off to school today. Later in the day, when I was still in school, I tried joining my server, but found that it only kept pinging. I checked the status and it said it was still up and running with people playing in it. When I got home and jiggled the mouse so the monitor would come back on, Jazz2 showed that everyone left the server at the same time. The reason this hasn't been happening before is probably because I usually turn off my monitor manually, and Windows can probably detect that it's already off so it doesn't try to set it to low power mode (which is still flawed, but at least it keeps Jazz running).

Looks like another thing on the "to do" list for v1.25...

Actually, that pinging was from your usual everyday server crash. I remember when I was there and the level ended, and then it proceeded to go to the next level with an "instant win" blank screen, and then finally, the crash. This happens everyday, especially on CTF servers.

In addition, I don't think turning the monitor off, automatic or not, does anything to the server at all. You might have had some extra features, such as the useless "turn off hard disk" feature. I cannot be exactly sure if this does anything to network data uploading/recieving, but you might want to turn that off too if it is on.

[EDIT: Hmm, didn't seem to catch the part about minimizing in your post there, Mono. Yup, the minimizing is most likely the problem.]

Check your Power Management Properties in the Control Panel. Make sure the System Standby is set to "Never".

Cesar, Stiletto: I already know how to prevent it from happening without altering my power management settings.

ElectroPiZZa: It wasn't an everyday server crash because everything was running perfectly when I got back.

Also, it's not exacly minimizing, it just stops drawing. Drawing the JJ2 screen uses all extra processing power so my processor usage is always at 100%. Only when I either minimize the server, or Windows sets low power display does Jazz2 stop drawing. (I can tell this because I keep sysmon running)

Also, why does your server sometimes no show up in the server list? It happens alot with my computer..... maybe it's the internet connection, but all the other server show up so......?

When I posted the orginal idea for a TSF Server, Veggie man said something about a problem like this. I will experiment, because in the rare occasions that I have put the TSF Server up, I simply turned the monitor off to keep someone from seeing before it shut off. You could just shut it off all the time. ;) Also, I have had some weird encounters before with everyone eject.

Mono: Lots of the time the server seems to be running perfectly (the game window is still running, etc.) but no response is being sent to the listserver.
