Time out, Router (Not Linksys!)

I've got a netgear router which splits the bandwidth of a cable comming from a university ISP. The router does not have a master computer. Both of the computers connect directly to the router without having to go through one another.
My ISP has all the ports open needed to play Jazz2.

How do I fix the 'time out' problem, when there's nothing to adjust on the router!? What else could it be? Are there any special parts of windows XP that use those ports?

Routers do not have software or master computers. They all work like that.

You HAVE to find out how to configure the router. Most often, you go to http://192.168.1.1 in your web browser. Try that. Also read my reply to Neo's router post. It has a lot of information in it.

If you STILL can't figure out how to configure it, read the manual. If you don't understand the manual, get someone who understands it to do it for you.

Is the router adminned by you, or the university? If the latter is the case, ask them to forward ports for you. They are probably not willing to give you the router password, but they will do it for you if you ask.

This router seems to have nothibng controlling it! It like.. runs independently of everything...

So did YOU set up the router? If you did, you should know already how to configure it. Routers won't work right out of the box.

Routers NEED configuring when they are used at first, and this is most likely done through the web browser. And they all run independently. There would be no point in getting a router if it needed a computer.

Have you tried going to http://192.168.1.1?

If you didn't set up the router, have you tried asking the person who set it up to do it for you?

Is the router set up for your computer(s) only, or is it for people other than you too? Like where is it in your network?

Have you read the manual?

I plugged in the cables and it worked -_-.. both the computers connected normally to the internet..
The only thing we had to do was enter in our password for the ISP

EDIT: Oh...I forgot the most important question: What router is it? What is the company, the model number, the name, etc?

Ah.. but it matters no longer, I finally got my dad to get off the router and I will have all 700k snd/rcv for myself Mwahahaha!

Well I went on the netgear site for you, and it seems you need to go to http://192.168.0.1 to set up the router, rather than 1.1 like the linksys ones.

That should work. There are a few documents about this at: http://support1.netgear.com/support1 - you can type in a question like "How do I forward ports on the RP114?" and it will tell you.

Yes, they can. Especially when you open the ports and it STILL doesn't work. Like me. But I guess I'm a hopeless case. And yes, I HAVE mentioned this before.
