View Full Version : 'The Good Old Days'

Remember the good old days? Remember when newbies and oldies weren't disputed and judged? Remember when all clans were considered a threat? Here's a few thing that may bring back a few memories from the good ol' days...
1) When GpW was God's Promise to Win
2) When Dethman was 'King'
3) When everyone asked: "How do you colour your name?"
4) When Jazz City was alive and thriving
5) When we used to get up in the morning and think about what a day it will be with Jazz Jackrabbit 2
6) When Jazz3 wasn't worried about (Most people didn't know it existed)
7) When everyone thought their clan was the best
8) When I was in FK
9) When everyone asked how you colour your fur or make no colon in your name
10) When Jazz Jackrabbit wasn't full of people who really started to annoy us (Exept for a certain few) *Cough yoyoma Cough*
11) When people weren't referred to as 'newbies'
12) When clans didn't destroy online friendships
13) When people like Dark Moogoo and Dethman still played the game
And finally, when our community was full of curiousity and playfullness, not disputing about small things in the game. Things like MegaWarp has made gaming a bit boring and useless. Nonetheless, I still love this wonderful game, and I will never forget the joys of waking up, getting some breakfast and playing a quick game of Jazz...

Oh well.

Well said Magoo! I agree, there's nothing like the old feeling of connecting to the net and staying up till 5 roasting people. Here's some more stuff that may remind you of the old days.
-Tilesets looked like they were made in MS paint.
-Everyone wasn't sick of using the Diamondus night tileset.
-People never used to say 'Oh no not this level'
-People knew you didn't flame the oldies. ;)
-Wakeman was so much more nagable. (Now, I'm afraid to nag him in case I find something nasty in my burger ;))
-When someone threatened to roast you, you took it as a serious threat, unlike today where newbs flame you and try to roast you.
-People knew who Martin was.
-When the serverlist was more than one page long (:P).
-When the oldies and respected people actually talked to you.
-When you weren't afraid of having Dizzy on the opposing team.
-When DM used to be called MERC (love that name).
-When you could call Fquist 'His Sir Quistyness' as much as you want.
-When 'Derby:Content Edit' was unrecognised.
-We still had the good old JMMB.
-When people like Onag, IceWing, Icewolf, Martin, Noraa and others still played.
-In the good old days, levels came in truckloads whenever Wakeman had multiple reviews done.
-Wakeman was promt and efficient in updating...oh wait, that was my imagnation. ;)
-The main JJ2 site at the time, J2C, had at least one update a week, compared to one update every few months.
-The 'Daily' Carrot was actually Daily.
-There were less cheating programs.
-You could impress people with your level making skills. Now they absentmindedly say 'Oh, yeah, nice, uh huh...'
-Bobby, Magoo, EvilMike, Myself, Quo Avek and many others were newbies.
-Dethman was 'elusive and hard to find' as opposed to 'Elusive and never around'.
-Arjan actually acknowledged that little green rabbit named Jazz.
-People didn't use the annoying invisible mode in ICQ as much.

BAH!!! DETHMAN STILL IS KING!!!! PHEER THE DETHMAN!!!!
Uhhh, and GpW used to be called God Promise to Win, not Plan, lol
Martin was cool ;)
I still call Frankenquist whatever I want, but he was my hero back then. Actually, I used to have a list of heroes:
Dethman: The same reason he was everyone else's hero
Fquist: Leader of the AMAZING J2LC that I've always wanted to join
Martin: This guy still makes the best levels, he just rocks
Mez: those tilesets were a beauty! Come on! admit it!
Oh, and Wakeman was prompt at a time. I used to upload somehting and the next day it was rated and stuff. I never got that 4.0 - 4.0 i wanted so much though :(
Heheheh, those were the daayz!

Personally, I think EM was a better name than MERC which was better than DM. :P

I should've played online back in 1999 but i didn't, know why? because i didn't know how!
Anyways, i did make some levels and submitted them to Jazz2 City and Universe Jazz got fair ratings back then, only if i submitted them now they wouldn't be that good.
And i regret not making myself more "known" back then.
So most of what i miss is Jazz 2 City.

Hmmm...I joined the community in the last few months of the "good old days" before it turned into the "new days". So I wasn't really there for very long, but I really think it was better than now. I just liked having more people to talk to, and lots more friends to make, and stuff like that. I liked hotel levels and employee rooms, and I made quite a few of my own. Levels weren't as good, but I didn't care. Now it seems that JJ2 has sort of "squashed" into a hard, flat, stale piece of bread. IIn the "good old days" it was a nice croissant ...mmmmm.... croissants. I just think that people were nicer back then, and there weren't as high expectations, and it was more fun. I think most of you old people will know what I mean.
Buster
Jan 17, 2002, 08:15 PM
Good point stripe, and Kaz, though you really didn't make a point (unless hurling is a point ;)) I think I see what you mean as well.
Indeed, we always seem to talk about how good things used to be...
If I may qoute scripture, "Do not inquire what was the cause that the former days were better than these, for in so doing you do not inquire wisely". Actually, that's a paraphrase...I hope I got it right :) I don't remember the reference, but I think it's in Proverbs.
Anyways, point is, we can all sit down and long for the days that are already gone, or we can enjoy the memories and get on with today, and make it something we will also enjoy remembering.
Sometimes that's hard though...it's easier to look back than to concentrate on the now.
Indeed, I can name numerious instances from my past that I wish were still here...times I remember with a smile, but a bitter-sweet one because those times are gone. The thing is, sometimes the past looks better than the present.
In the present, I'm going to college (no, I don't enjoy it, thank you very much, and I could lay out a whole post about why I dislike my current situation so, but that would probably be of little interest to anyone. I'm sure you all have your own gripes in the now.) and there doesn't seem to be as much...fun, smiles, and friendship in my life as I recall in the past.
But then...memories are selective. I remember so many good times, so the past seems like a utopia...but practically I know that is not true.
It's like wishing that you had been born in another era. A person's sense of romantics may cause him to long for the time of knights and battle-field honor, but logic says that all of the magic would be gone were you to actually live back then, and it would all be as common place and boring as the current state of things is to you now.
And yet, the mere fact that when we look back on our lives things look better seems to say that we are really taking things for granted right now. The time will probably come when we will look back on what we are doing now and long for these moments again...which may proove that they weren't so bad after all, but rather we weren't paying enough attention to them to enjoy them while they were here.
As the saying goes, Carpe Diem (Sieze the Day)

Hey, you all just mention how nice Jazzin' in the old days has been, and how bad the new days are. I don't know the old days, I play Jazz2 since it has been released, but the first time I played online was in May 2001.
So I just know the new days which most of you don't like (it seems so!). But did you ever think of reasons why they are so bad? You all mention the "rookies". Who is a "rookie"? Someone that starts playing right now? And, for most fo you, someone that is, in addition, bad. But why are they bad? Just watch what happens all the time in our servers: someone, a new Jazzer, perhaps he's playing his first time online, joins a server with good ppl in it. What will they say? I'm sure, and I've already seen this, that they say: "a rook! Ban the rooks". And then this guy is out of the server.
This is what you say everywhere you go at the moment. Everyone thinks bad of rooks, but nobody gives them a chance to become better. What would you, for example, have done if you would not have been the first Jazzers? Would you have liked the "old" guys banning you out from every high-quality server? Sure not.
But this banning is really the biggest problem of the new days. How can someone become better if he's still banned? That way, you'll only make the "rooks" come together in their own servers. And that way you make them hate you. You probably laugh now, but this is no joke. A community can't survive without new guys, and with your opinion of new players, the Jazz2-community will die, and not in a few years, but earlier.
I had luck. For you old guys, I'm a nub with my few months of online-experience. But why had I the luck to become better? I found someone that helped me: Aiko. He helps most german Jazzers (what I am) to become better, at least when he hosts good lvls, and good ppl join. He don't bans the "rooks" them, he lets them take part and play. So they can become better, and perhaps they are no "rooks" any more after a few weeks.
Another thing you mention what would be bad in the new days is that nobody knows martins levels. I also didn't know them 2 months ago. But how should I? Nobody hosts them, the old guys run away from the "rooks" to 1.23, and there are still good lvls hosted. The servers with good lvls in TSF are rare, and the most new players got Jazz2 with the SpecialEdition, I think. And this edition installs TSF automatically. So where shall they get 1.23 from, if they can't even contact anyone because they are still banned?
Perhaps a dedicated TSF-Server could help...
I hope you changed your opinion about the new days a bit now. And if so, we'll perhaps be able to talk about the good old days of 2001/02 in five years...

And I don't dis n00bs, I love them, and most of us here remember the old days because they were n00bs at that time. I've never had as much fun in games as the times I was a n00b. It's something you can really enjoy thinking about. If I had the option to lose all my Jazz2 skills this instant and become a true n00b right now I would! Man, it'll be so fun, wondering how people killed me with a huge yellow nuke, not knowing what the hearts mean, thinking a powerup makes you go faster, walking around levels etc. etc. etc.
sigh, those were the days ;)

I recall the good old days as the time I could talk to Noogy about Lori and thus improve the site, write stories...see the art flow in, people share the happiness of the site.
I recall the good old days as the time I joined this board in late 1999, being welcomed warmly and not looked down upon.
I recall the good old days that I couldn't play Jazz because my connection was too slow...and even now, it's barely enough...
THe last part of the good old days...when I joined WhiteFang's team. Played only once, I remember...
But, I'm going to make a last attempt at bringing part of the old days back. LC should be back this month.

Lori Central back up soon? Yay! :D
Ah yes. I remember the days where in anticipation of a lag filled server, I'd log on to J2C and check for updates, laughing at Wakeman's lack of tardiness ( ;) ) before checking the good 'ol JMMB. Then, I'd join some servers, on occasion have a quick chat with Martin or Whitefang, and run around Diam. Warzone. Yes, those were the days.
What makes me prefer those old days? It's simple really, I had many friends who have since left the community. Clans were something that were revered and seemed important, and joining MERC was always something people scrabbled for. There was alot more excietement about things, and alot more listservers too. Generally, there were no people who flammed and cussed and acted like dimwits with the exception of a few. How things change.

Ah, the good old days.
When ShadowGpW was just a member of GpW and Xeno\Ellinger\Ghaleon\Tien\Blood wolf\muza\Veryn was the leader.
When Scorp still used to have time to play JJ2 and had many names and extended the life of the JCMB and then shelled out cash for the CMB.
When there was no J2HG and Black Ninja still wasn't a part of it.
When Everlasting and pennywise's programs were unheard of.
When the JMMB's post queen and most active moderator\admin was still Admael.
When J2LC and ML were the only good major level groups at the time.
When Martin's silent slayers and other levels were still hosted on servers.
When QoB was only beaten by very few people.
When Dethman, MErlin, Martin, Dark MooGoo, stripe, Bluez, EugeneUOI were the 'best' players around when it comes to CTF and\or Battle.
When Outlaw UOI and Biohazard UOI were still active and were still very recognizable.
When Krezack was still slizer and mostly played Age Of Empires.
To be continued...

ok, im here at my aunts house, babysitting my nephew, so im bored anyway, let me tell you guys the unfamous story of the two CC spies.
like 1.5 years ago, when i was still playing, -well, i had a few 2-day breaks to get attention-, i was joking around together with Flea (dunno if that was his name hehe, but im pretty sure bout it) about CB, like we, and many others, always did. I got a wonderfull idea... lets spy on CraccoClan! We created to spy names, really dumb, newbie-ish names, and acted like real CCers.
we did all the crazy cracco tests, and let CraccoBoy get an F on his french test, cause he had to "train" us all night long and forgot to study harharharhar! ;).
CB told me he had over 400 members, and he told my spyname he had like 50 members (the 25 spies everybody had probably included). Then, one day, we were "training" together with CB in one of his crappy Cracco levels, we told him we were BlinK and Flea.. hahahahahhahahaha it was so funny.. while he trained us (he didnt know we were both dutch) he talked to one of his friends.. saying in dutch "dude, do you trust these two?" "one of them is really weird' and stuff like that... hahahahah it was so funny... that was one of the later-good-old-days..
the real good old days were the one when i was in FR, and after that it died. Then i created CR, my awesome - ghetto - Cool Rabbits Clan, met Nitro, friend for life, did 4 clanwars and lostem all. The day CB arived was like the invasion of the newbies,
75% of them are weirdo's, and joined CC, the other 25% are actually pretty cool.
and no, i dont hate newbies, i just like to **** Craccoboy off.

Oh yeah, and Freelance actually used that name and did jobs for clans as far as spying went. Funny times. And the Gold Knights were big clan. Haha! Too funny.
The best part of the old days was you could go online and find tones of servers.. there was always someone to battle with and at all times.

Anyway, even though we all miss the good old days, the present isn't so bad. New levels and tilesets are still being made and there's still a website for uploading stuff. And the fact that some levels looked redundant and boring resulted in level makers to work harder and thus make better levels. JJ2 has come a long way since the good old days, and it's still prospering to this date (even if it isn't as fast as most people would want it). So in all, I'm kinda glad we're not stuck in the good old days, though I still miss Jazz2City and Universe Jazz and Jeh and Dethman and some other stuff.

- When people liked my creative, yet useless, levels :D
- When there wasn't any "annoying" newbies
- When my Town level was the only one of it's kind (It was NOT a hotel, I repeat, it was NOT a hotel)
- When I made music packs for J2C (Of other games' music)
- When such good friends of mine as AniFreak (IceWing), AtomicTaco, etc. (They are the only ones that I can remember off the top of my head that aren't around here now)
- When I had an enemy in the 666 clan.
To be continued.......
Xeno was GameLeader for a short period..
okey but let me go..
-When Jeh made levels
-When "Jeh must die" was normal
-When CyberSpaz was over-rated
-When Atomic Feline was here
-When I started project "Jazz to Quake" ;P
-When Disguise had the Logo for the old GPW (still have it laying some where)
-When ICQ was good
-When the patches where made
-When MErlin had a clan
and tons of Whens :-)

-When I multiclanned (Ugh)
-When I actually joined clans
-When I was in the joke clan, Lamers (XenoZeLame was the name I used in that clan)
-When people didn't blame me for things I never did, I won't name anyone who did blame me.
-When there was no such thing as clones

1. When someone actually was begging to get that new tileset that just came out
2. When people actually hosted servers in _honor_ of you
3. When people actually thought your level was _rad_
4. People never came into your server and said "God, this level SUCKS! SUCKS!" and left making you feel like either cursing them out or sitting and sulking in a corner
5. When there were more than 3 pages of servers up
6. When people were actually friends and not total enemies that curse eachother out and threaten
7. When you had a challenge you took it seriously
8. When everyone used to write in CAPS (I did when I had the name 7OF9)
9. When someone cloned your name you took it into your hands with extreme priority
10. People didn't clone you just to make you the bad guy; to go around cursing people out so when you came back later you would be thought of as a cold-hearted rabbit.

*sobs hysterically*
Sigh.
Okay, how about when people said hi to you and you had no idea who they were, so they'd go off reeling off a list of names until they got to one you recognized?
Or when you did that...
Or when RR wasn't rubber rutebegas or whatever it is now, it was Rabid Rabbits and the biggest clan at the time?
(I believe at the top of its career it had 49 members.)
*sniff*
I miss those days. they ended for me in the end of 99.

I remember those days too. Here's something to think about, though...
In the future, some horrible JJ2-less time where the community is dead (hopefully not for a few millenia ;) ) these will be looked back on as the 'good-old days'. While the golden age of Jazz 2 is now long past, and I too long for it, Jazz 2 remains, as many of us do too. (Well, I wish I could say many). Let us continue and live for today!

I probably don't count as an "oldie", do I? Lemme explain.
I bought Jazz 2 less than a month after it came out, played it, and got hooked. Three or four months later I stumbled upon Jazz 2 City in it's prime. Immediately I began visiting weekly, if not daily. I submitted levels under the name of "Son of Jazz", which some people may remember since one pack ("Devan's Toys") made it to 20 on the top 100 level list. I watched as the updates got slower and slower... then stopped. But I still visited Jazz 2 City along with the then new Universe Jazz. I also continued to read almost every post I could on the JJMB (though I never registered for some dumb reason - I wish I had). After Universe Jazz died I turned here and FINALLY joined the message board. So even though you don't know me... I know and love all of you!
In conclusion: I wish I had become part of the memories sooner... :(
But of course, Jazz will never die, so ROCK ON!!!

P.S. So much for my sentimentality... :)

What's really funny is that I was the first one to ever refer to the early days as "the golden age". People always used to say "what the heck are you talking about?" Now you people have assimilated it as a common term.. I feel loved. :D

Yes, I also think JJ1 was more popular. When it was released, its graphic was wonderful and there wasn't anything like that. When Jazz2 was released, there already were some shooters...

Jazz 2 was more like the failed-to-become-well-known sequel. Like, everyone used to play Jazz1, demo or full version, but not many people know/knew about Jazz2. I think the distributors (or whoever is responsible for the marketing process) miserably failed, and thanx to them, noone wants to finance Jazz3 and all that. GRRRRRRR.
to be honest, I didin't know Jazz2 existed until I went to a toy store someday and found this whole row of Jazz 2's for very cheap. It was version 1.1. :)

Yes, Splash is right. When I got some of my friends to play Jazz2, they often said: "Jazz? Huh, I played this when I was a small boy!". They knew of Jazz1, but not of Jazz2. I also got it from a friend, who still buys cheap old games :D!

Yeah, I had the JJ2 demo not long after it came out, never played online though cause I had like, a 33.6KB modem back then and it was hard enough just to dl the darn thing.
The advertising guru's? I don't even think there were any, based on how little-known the game was even at the times of it's release.
As for JJ3, blame Gathering of Developers (G.O.D. Games). They lost money on JJ2 (see reason above - nobody heard of it  ), and even though we won the poll opn 'what sequel do ya want?', they made FLY!2, which is absolute garbage. And now, there is zilcho coming from G.O.D. Games, guess they shouldn've taken up JJ3, cause now they ARE dying.

Well I didn't know about jazz2 myself until suddenly stumbling upon the epic website which I heard about jazz2 and that was total luck because I wasn't a vet at surfing the internet yet. I played jazz1 for the first time in early 1997 and gained access to the net later that year and found out about jazz at the end of the year.
What I don't understand is Epic couldn't find a publisher..
Contrary to what they said I'm sure they didn't lift a finger in finding a publisher for jazz3 or they would have gotten GT(Infogrames) to publish it since they published their unreal series which is awesome and other good games and games that totally suck salt, they even published survivor which was 1000% times worse than a pileload of crap! What were they thinking?

jazz1 was FuN... i used to play it on meh cousins OLLLLLDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD computer in tha basement. jazz2 was on my somewhat *newer* computer (shareware) but i never played internet for a while. but that was fun, being annoying, kicking people out of servers for no reason, cussing at people for no reason. that was FUN!!!!!! @$#(*#@)($#@$ then came registerd. fun fun fun.

I remember having to put myself on invisible back in the ole ICQ 99b days, because so many of you people talked to me, I couldn't even get a small update done. :)
Still, it was a fun time. I'm gonna see if can get that feeling back once LC's gonna be back up (and, i hope, soon...been waiting long enough)
