Before claiming of this thread, read why I did it:
I know that this thread already has been there very often. But I can't remember any poll in it.
Another reason why I did it, is that I'd like to see if there were changes since the last thread of this kind. There have been a lot of new JCF members the last months, I remember that J20- "did-you-know-tip": "The JCF is J2O's Forum with over 100 w00ping members". W00ps, there are about 600 members now...and still, the did-you-know-tip says: "The JCF [...]400[...]". Many new people in a short time. So- I'm sure there must have been changes. The new Jazz2-Generation (like me :p ) comes, and most of them got TSF. Let's see what the numbers will be like.

Ik heb geprobeerd in de aanloop naar de release zo weinig mogelijk mee te krijgen over dit album, om er onbevangen tegenover te staan zodra hij helemaal uit was. Het weinige dat ik wél heb meegekregen was overwegend negatief, dus ik begon toch met een wat bang gevoel met luisteren.

Gelukkig viel het begin heel erg mee. Nummer 1 is een soort intro, dus die laten we maar even weg in de beoordeling. We Are The Night en All Rights Reversed vervolgens zijn wat mij betreft twee geweldige nummers met een "anthem"-vleugje die veel goeds beloven. In tegenstelling tot het meeste wat ik tot nu toe heb gelezen vind ik de Klaxons-samenwerking meer dan geslaagd en vind ik zeker dat het nummer nog steeds duidelijk Chemical Brothers is.

Nummer 4, Saturate, is vervolgens een kleine verassing: het blijkt op wat details en de lengte na het al eerder gereleasede Electronic Battle Weapon 8 te zijn. Leuk nummer, niet zo'n dansvloerstamper van het kaliber dat je op eerdere albums wel zag, maar toch niet slecht. Het viel voor mij wel een beetje uit de toon met de rest, maar dat zal vermoedelijk deels komen omdat ik deze al een aantal keer gehoord had en de rest niet.

Vervolgens is het de beurt aan de eerste single, Do It Again. Grappig genoeg vind ik dit een van de minste nummers van het album, met de wat té kale bassline op de achtergrond en een wat rommelig geheel van vocals en effecten eroverheen. Zeker niet zo'n knaller als bijvoorbeeld Galvanize dus. Das Spiegel is op zich niet slecht maar gaat wel een beetje het ene oor in en het andere uit; het beklijft niet. Net iets te saai.

Toen The Salmon Dance, inzette, dacht ik even dat ik met een skit te maken had, maar het is blijkbaar een volwaardig nummer. De tekst, die vreselijk droog verhaalt over een dans gebaseerd op het paringsritueel van "Sammy the Salmon", wordt op een vrij blije manier over een vrij blije beat heengerapt, op zo'n manier dat "blij" dicht tegen "kinderachtig" aanhangt. Als B-Side had dit niet misstaan, maar of het een goede keuze was deze midden op een volwaardig album te zetten (zeker als je het met de andere nummers vergelijkt) weet ik niet.

Gelukkig is daar Burst Generator, een bijna 7 minuten durend nummer dat me weer doet terugdenken aan de "oude" Brothers van de eerste drie CD's. Opwindende bliepjes gecombineerd met een pompende beat en de bekende onverstaanbare maar o zo effectieve vocal samples, langzaam opbouwend van climax naar climax. Wat mij betreft de topper van de CD. Vervolgens wordt naadloos overgegaan in A Modern Midnight Conversation, een net zo fijn nummer dat wel een stuk meer upbeat en jolig klinkt, zeker met de vertrouwde koebellen die ook op deze CD dus weer duidelijk hun opwachting maken. Gecombineerd met een vocal sample die heel zweverig "Listen to your heart" zingt klinkt dit nummer wel heel retro, maar ik geef het toch het voordeel van de twijfel.

Vervolgens zakt de CD helaas nogal in. In Battle Scars, het volgende nummer, komt het "There's No Path To Follow" uit de intro terug en tegelijk wordt het tempo ongeveer gehalveerd. Battle Scars is een stuk traditioneler opgebouwd, met vocalen over een - relatief - kale beat heen. Het nummer is zeker niet slecht, maar wel een beetje vlees noch vis. Geen kraker waar je los op kan gaan, maar ook niet een wat gevoeliger nummer als "Alive Alone". Het luistert lekker weg, maar veel speciaals is het niet.

Als dan het nóg rustigere Harpoons inzet rijst het vermoeden dat de voetjes definitief aan de vloer blijven. Dit nummer is opnieuw helemaal niet verkeerd, en in ieder geval beter dan het vorige, maar iets te veel ambient naar mijn smaak. Wat mij betreft mogen de heren het bij de wat energievollere nummers houden, want met nummer 12 dooft het album een beetje als uit, terwijl ik het liever met een knaller had zien eindigen. The Pills Won't Help You Now is een fijn, dromerig nummer, en aan de vocalen is vrij goed te horen dat Midlake graag met Radiohead mag dwepen. Maar toch knaagt daar het gevoel dat het allemaal wel érg soft was.

Het is wel duidelijk dat het Big Beat-tijdperk wat de heren betreft definitief over is. De richting die ze nu zijn ingeslagen kan mij zeker bekoren - het levert nummers als All Rights Reversed en Burst Generator op - maar toch mis ik wat van de energie, de power, die je op de voorgaande albums nog hoorde. Vergeleken met het meeste wat je op We Are The Night hoort was "The Big Jump" van het vorige album nog snoeihard te noemen - wat minder op veilig spelen zou best mogen. Verder is het gewoon een goed album, met helaas wat minder duidelijkere uitschieters dan vroegâh. Volgende keer graag de lijn van de eerste helft doorzetten, en nummers als The Salmon Dance (hoe lollig ik de tekst ook vind) naar de B-Side van de singles verbannen - dan komt het helemaal goed. Tot dan is dit zeker een fijn tussendoortje.
