Windows 2000 Logon

I can't remember the Windows 2000 Password to my machine so i can't access it...

what i'm trying to ask if theres any way to get it back/bypass it somehow from DOS or something. Is it possible?

ok - if this ISNT possible, i want to know if its possible to install Windows98 over windows2000 on a NTFS5 drive (im pretty sure its NTFS5). Otherwise, i want to know if i can format it somehow... (i cant format without the drive being FAT32)... or if i can convert NTFS5 back into FAT32 (im pretty sure it cant be done BUT TELL ME IF IT CAN!!!!!!!@!@!)

Umm when you turn computer on try pressing F5 to run windows in safe mode.

I've seen this problem a lot (it's quite common). I'm going to give you a step by step procedure. If you need any or all of the files that I mention, email or PM me and I'll email them to you. NOTE: You will need to be able to boot from CD-ROM in order to use this method.

1. Format a floppy drive as a bootable system disk.
2. Copy FORMAT.COM and FDISK.EXE to the floppy disk.
3. Boot from the floppy drive.
4. Run FDISK.EXE and delete ALL partitions on the hard drive.
5. Create a PRIMARY DOS PARTITION in FDISK.
6. Exit FDISK and reboot from the floppy.
7. Format the new partition using FORMAT.COM (type "format [drive]:").
8. Put the CD for whichever version of Windows you want into your bootable CD drive and remove the floppy disk.
9. Reboot from the CD and install Windows.

*NOTE: You will need the WINDOWS 98 VERSION of FDISK.

Umm...well...

That will format everything and delete all the data.

But yes, it is impossible to convert NTFS back to FATxx without losing data.

I would suggest you try really hard to remember the password, and if that fails...then reinstall Win 2000.

Could you tell me how to do that! It would be really useful If it just did that. Unless It requires me having to Logon to Windows 2000... :(

Well...I've never installed Win2K before, but I assume there is a CD and a boot disk for it.

Put the boot disk in the disk drive, turn the computer on, and make sure to select "With CD Support" in the boot menu that appears. Then put in the CD, and run the setup program.

It should be something like that, but I don't know the specifics.

It's as simple as 1, 2, 3. I don't have a Windows 2000 Computer But I fixed this problem before, I think.

1) Turn on your Computer.
2) When the 'Log In' screen appears press Cancel
3) You're now logged in.

*Don't type in anything, in the 'Log In' screen!*

well Link, i never created a boot disk for windows 2000. i have the setup cd however. but if i do get a boot disk and the cd is it possible to then convert back to Fat32?

Acutally, I believe that Windows 2000 does NOT reset the passwords when re-installed. You'll have to either remember the password or lose ALL your data. :( Sorry.

If you want to recover data and the above doesn't work:
1. Format a floppy drive as a bootable system disk.
2. Copy FORMAT.COM and FDISK.EXE to the floppy disk.
3. Boot from the floppy drive.
Do this and you'll have access to your HD, I believe. If you would like to use the windows interface and have an extra HD lying around, you can install Win2k, add it as the Master drive and make the original drive as the Slave drive. Presto! Access to your files have been restored (unless they were encrypted)

Yes... now you're catching on to our intent.

Even if you have Windows Me, a Windows 98 boot disk will allow you to install it. So make a WinMe or Win98 boot disk and follow my other instructions above.

If you can't seem to do that (on some systems the checkbox for it isn't there for some reason), then go to control panel, add remove programs and click on the 'Startup Disk' tab, then insert a disk and click the button.

Yeah, we all think of the simple Debug way to get passed it. Are you on a network, Slim? Oh yes! And when you Ghost your hard drive over to another hard drive, does it keep the windows settings? I can't remember. Not saying you should go out and buy an 80.0GB Western Digital hard drive, now. ^-~
